Ponds
Chasing snakes along the bed
Of a pond
Their red bellies sliding
Against musky green grass
The frogs
Jumping into the water
Creating their own song
The serpents wake
Silken and quick
And tiny turtles bathing
On a floating log
Ants crawling up feet
With no-never-mind
The sneezes at yellow
Flowers and cold
Cold watermelon
Juice dripping down our necks
To pick black berries
By the fence
And cannonballs in the pool
To chase water snakes
To chase corn snakes
To chase garter snakes
Into the rock walls
To summer
