No Heat With Out A Flame.

“Hurry up with the beer man, the games about to start” Josh complained as he turned the sound up and opened the bag of Doritos. Damien hefted the heavy crate of ice and cans into the living room.

“It’s all right for you, you big girls blouse all you had to carry was two bags of Doritos’s and two pots of dip” Damian snarled collapsing beside his best mate and work colleague of 7 years.

“Stop your whinging” Josh said as he opened two cans and passed one to Damian. The beer was cold and welcoming to Damien he could not escape the refreshed ‘ahhh’ that escaped his lips.

The hockey players took their positions both Josh and Damian knew their team stood little chance of winning but watching the games together was now a religion to them. It had been what split Josh and his last boyfriend up.

Damian remembered the day clearly.

***Flash back***

Josh and he had been watching a movie when Brian had come home from the pub, Damian had been aware of Josh’s sexuality and it had not bothered him and had gotten along with Brian, or tried to, the man had stood there watching the pair talking and commenting on the film when he had turned the film off.

‘I am sick of constantly sharing you’ he had told Josh ‘It’s me or him.’

‘This isn’t the time’ Josh had said standing though Damian had seen the angers flash in his eyes and it has sent a shiver of emotions through him, that then Damian had not understood. Damian knew the paid had been fighting allot recently and now knew what about.

‘Now’s exactly the right time. You pretend to be his friend I bet you two are fucking behind my back’

‘Damian is straight’ Josh had stated letting out a harsh laugh of indignity ‘and I have this thing called loyalty you might have heard about it while you were slagging me off to every one who listens don’t think I don’t know what you’ve been saying to our friends’

‘Straight or not you love him but now I’ve had a gut full it’s him or me’ Brian had demanded.

The smirk that had graced Josh’s lips was cold and bitter. ‘I guess you better get packing’ he had told Brian.

***end of Flash back***

There seemed an unspoken agreement between Josh and Damian never to mention that day or its events but it had stirred some thing in Damian then, some thing deep and dark a lust he had not thought he would feel. His relationship with his girlfriend Carol had fizzled out soon after that and here they were nearly a year later same place. He was just about to take a sip of his beer when the phone rang Josh growled and picked it up.

“The Game is on so I hope for your sake you are not a telo-marketer” He said into the phone but who ever it was soon had his full attention. On instinct Damian put down his beer and watched Josh.

“Yeah he’s with me, we’ll be there in twenty” the phone went back into its cradle. “Work is calling all teams in, a huge fire in the Bellevue apartments is out of control and they want all hands on”

The energy in the room shifted room shifted as both men left the apartment. Nothing was said in the car as they drove to the depot or as they changed. The fire they had been told had already possibly claimed numerous lives. They weaved and dodged through the traffic towards the Bellevue estates a 60 story tall apartment building in the centre of the city.

Immediately they were out of the truck and the hoses were set up. “Damian you get to lead a team of four in” Damian nodded. “You have James, Rick and Dean with you. You get to do floors 12 – 16. Stay close search thorough. There was a big meeting being held in the 13th floor no ones come out from there, we’re missing near on 40 people keep in contact by radio”

Damian risked one look at Josh who radioed “see you soon mate. Those beers are still on ice” they never said good bye believing it to be a curse. Damian gave one tense nod before turning to enter the burning building.
