A Lesser Me

Just a little story I wrote in the begining of 2007. Nothing much...Just a bit of Fluffy fluff, lol.

“Meet me at the church.” She whispered in his ear as they stood by the bike rack after school.

“Why?” He asked, interested.

“I…have a favor.” She called back to him as she got on her bike and headed towards the church.

“Well, okay then!” He smiled as he got on his own bike and followed her.

“So,” he said as they got off their bikes and reunited, “what is this ‘favor’ you need to ask of me?”

“Well…you see…I was just wondering if…” She looked away, but not fast enough, because he caught her face turning a light pink from blushing.

“It’s alright, go ahead. I’ll gladly do anything you ask!”

“Kiss me.” She said, almost too softly to hear.

“What? I couldn’t--” no more words came out, because at that moment, she threw her arms around his head and pressed her lips against his.

A light sun shower misted upon their heads as the two stood, embraced, in the church parking lot.

The rain stopped as quickly as it had come, as the two separated.

“Kate…” The boy started.

“Daisuke, please don’t say anything today.” She smiled softly.

Daisuke stood silent as he watched Kate get on her bike and ride away.

**

“Kate! Wait up!” The girl called out.

“Hey Risa! What’s up?” she said as the two girls walked down the school’s hallway to class.

“Well. I actually have some new gossip to tell!” Risa grinned proudly.

“Risa, you rock at having the latest gossip.”

Risa beamed. “I know. So! I heard from Kari, that Takeshi was told by Kimishima, that Yamato saw Daisuke and some girl kissing by the church yesterday after school! But the thing is, no one knows who this girl is! Apparently she wasn’t facing Yamato’s way while she was kissing Daisuke. And Daisuke wont say anything about it! He just says that he doesn’t think he should tell!” She concluded on a very confident note, being very proud of her latest gossip.

Kate looked away just in time as she felt her face turn red. “I wonder who the girl was…” She tried her best to go along with the normal gossip routine. Lucky for Kate, Risa didn’t notice her look away.

“Well, I’ll see you later Kate. I have to run to History class. What a drag! See ya!” Risa said before she left her friend.

'I wonder if I’ll see Daisuke today. I doubt it, since I don’t have any classes with him again until tomorrow…' Kate thought to herself as she walked the last few feet to her desk in Algebra II. I just hope I can make it through another math lecture by Mr. Kester.

*

*BZZZZZZZZNNNG!!!*

“Okay class, don’t forget about your homework! Lesson 6.3 due on Monday! You’re dismissed.” Mr. Kester finished.

'Oh boy, I think that very might well have been the best sleep I’ve gotten in 3 weeks!' Kate thought to herself as she picked up her books and left the classroom, headed towards her locker.

Kate looked around the hall for any sign of Daisuke, but there was none to be seen. 'I knew I wouldn’t see him today, why did I even look. Let’s see, 8-46-34.' As she opened her locker, she was surprised to see a small paper hanging from the middle of the locker on a string. It had something written on it in dark blue ink. So she read:

~“Kate, after school, meet me in the churches back parking lot. This time no peeping toms.
I promise.”~

'Ah!!! I bet this is from Daisuke!! How CUUUUUTE!! I can’t believe he did this!!' Kate thought excitedly.

The rest of the day was a blur to Kate. All she could think about was the note from Daisuke, and why he could have wanted to meet her after school. She didn’t even notice when Takeshi and Kimishima both tried to jump over 2 large trash cans that were lined up in the hall, and actually ended up inside of them!

After school Kate went to the bike rack and, as expected, Daisuke’s bike was already gone. She got on her bike and headed to the church.

As she rode into the front parking lot heading towards the back one, Kate could hardly wait to get there, having gone over many different possibilities of what could happen once she’s there with Daisuke. She was so lost in thought that she forgot about the pot hole near the back of the front parking lot, and ran straight into it!

“AAHHH!!!” She yelled, as she was brought back to reality by an abrupt fall off of her bike.

'Aw man! This is not how I expected this to start out.' She heard an approaching bike, and then someone running her way. Kate’s eyes were closed tightly, from the pain in her right hand. When she opened them, she was met by a pair of worried green eyes.

“Kate, are you okay?” Came the worried and yet soothing voice of Daisuke “That was quite a fall.” He helped Kate sit up as much as she could, then sat down next to her.

“Yeah, I think I’m ok. It’s just my hand.” She could now see that her right palm was bleeding from hitting the cement.

“Here.” Daisuke said, as he gently took Kate’s hurt hand in his and looked at it. He took his backpack off, and took out a bottle of water and a dark blue T-shirt. First he unscrewed the top on the water bottle. “Now this might hurt a little.” He warned, then dribbled some water over the wound.

Kate winced the tiniest bit, then looked at Daisuke. “I’m sorry Daisuke. That you’re having to do this.” She stated genuinely, almost ashamed.

“What? Don’t be silly! I don’t mind one bit. I’m just glad you’re not hurt any worse than this.” He put the top back on the bottle, and started pulling on the hem of the dark blue shirt.

“No wait! Don’t--”

“It’s ok. It’s not dirty, it‘s brand new.”

“But that’s not what I--”

“I’ll get another one, don’t worry.” He said calmly as the hem finally broke and he tore a strip off.

“You didn’t have to--”

“I wanted to.” He said. His caring voice calming her once more. He placed the cloth over his leg, then once again picked up Kate’s hand ever so gently, and placed it over the cloth. Then he wrapped the cloth around her hand, with more care than she had ever seen.

“Thank you…Daisuke.” Kate smiled gratefully as she looked down at her newly wrapped hand.

“You’re welcome.” He smiled back. “So, I guess it‘s ok to assume that you got my note?” He asked as he stood up, then helped her to her feet.

“Yes I did. How did you get it into my locker anyways?” She hadn’t even thought about ‘how’ before.

“Well if you really want to know…” He looked at Kate. “I--”

“No wait!” She looked down at her wrapped hand again and smiled. “I don’t want to know how.” She liked the idea of it staying a mystery more than finding out.

“Well,” Daisuke continued, understanding what she meant, “I bet you at least want to know why I asked you to meet me here.”

Kate looked at Daisuke expectantly. Waiting for him to tell her why. 'I wonder if it’s what I think?! Could he be asking me out?!' She could barely stand the suspense. It felt like hours before he said anything.

“You see…about yesterday…after school? I w--[Zzzm Zzzm Zzzzzm]” Daisuke stopped and pulled a vibrating cell phone out of his pant pocket. He looked at Kate with an apologetic face as he answered. “Hello? Hi mom…I’m--. Okay…Soon!…Alright, I’m on my way.” He hung up.

“Kate, I’m sorry, but I have to get home. I’m busy after school tomorrow with basketball practice, but I need to see you again. Could you meet me in the park by the big Oak, Saturday night at 9 o‘clock?” Kate nodded. “Great.”

Daisuke walked towards their bikes. “Oh, and If it’s ok with you Kate, I want to take your bike home with me and fix it back up a little.” He said as he picked up her bike. She hadn’t noticed, but the front rim of her bike was bent in, and the handlebars were twisted. “You can ride mine. I’m sure it would be a lot easier to ride right now than yours.” Daisuke smiled at Kate as she nodded in agreement.

Kate smiled as he awkwardly rode her beaten up bike away. “I’ll see you tomorrow Daisuke! Thank you!!” She called out to him. He waved back without turning around. She turned around, got on Daisuke’s lent bike, and headed towards her own home.

**

“Okay class, turn in your books to page 598.” Mrs. Tinit squabbled on. It was American Literature class, the last class of the day.

Kate and Daisuke were enjoying their one class together. They sat across from each other, and because they weren’t allowed to talk in class, the two communicated through passing notes.

(Kate) Aren’t you so glad that it’s Friday?

(Daisuke) Oh yeah! Finally some time to spend away from school!

(Kate) Haha, I know how you feel. Oh, Speaking of school, what is Mrs. Tinit talking about?

(Daisuke) Um, something about a guy who died a long time ago, that wrote something important. ;)

(Kate) Lol! Oh, and Daisuke, thank you again for your help yesterday :)

(Daisuke) It was no problem. Im sorry I havent gotten your bike fixed yet. Ill have it for you tomorrow night at the park. You can continue using my bike until then.

(Kate) Thanks :) Wait! How did you get to school? I hope you didn’t ride it like that!

(Daisuke) No, I didnt ride your bike, I walked.

(Kate) What?! I cant let you do that! Take your bike to ride home. After all, it’s my bike, not yours, that’s damaged!!

(Daisuke) No, no, no. I lent you my bike to use while Im fixing yours. Besides, this way, Im getting in some quality exercise!

(Kate) But, you have to stay after school for basketball practice right?! So it could be dark by the time you get out! I don’t want you to have to walk home in the dark!

(Daisuke) Haha, dont worry about me. They make sure to let us out before dark just for that reason.

(Kate) Well…Ok. But be careful. Oh, class is almost over! I guess I’ll talk to you later Daisuke. It’s been nice talking to you :)

(Daisuke) Likewise. See ya tomorrow night!

**

From the time she got home from school on Friday, to Saturday night, all Kate could think about was meeting Daisuke at the park.

Around 8:45 Kate told her mom that she was going out, got on Daisuke’s lent bike, and headed to the park. When she reached the edge of the park she got off the bike and started walking with it towards the big Oak tree.

‘There it is!’ She thought excitedly. Reaching the tree, Kate walked around the left side of it just to be met with a surprise! Daisuke was sitting on a blanket leaning against the tree.

“You’re early!” Daisuke exclaimed as he jumped up.

“Oh…ya…” Kate tightened her grip on the bike handles and looked down, embarrassed. “Sorry, I just couldn’t wait any longer.”

“Don’t apologize, it’s fine! I’m glad you’re here early!” Daisuke said smiling. Kate looked up at him and smiled. “Oh!” Daisuke exclaimed, as though woken from a deep sleep, “ I fixed your bike!” He motioned towards her newly fixed bike leaning against the tree behind them.

“Wow, it looks great!” she said as she rested Daisuke’s bike against the tree and walked over to her own, placing her right hand on it. She turned back to Daisuke “Thank you so much! It was such a wreck!”

“It was no problem at all! By the way, how’s your hand doing? Daisuke motioned towards Kate’s now lightly bandaged hand resting on her bike.

“Oh!” She picked up her hand and looked at it. “It’s doing fine! It should be all healed in a few days.”

“I’m glad.” Daisuke said caringly as Kate looked back up at him. A few moments went by before either of them spoke.

“So, why don’t we sit down.” Daisuke prompted, taking the spot on the right side of Kate.

They sat together, in the center of the blanket, and, leaning back on their arms, gazed at the stars.

“You know Kate…” Daisuke began after a few minutes. “I’ve had a crush on you for some time now.”
Kate took her eyes off of the stars and directed them, soft and hopeful, towards Daisuke, who was still staring intently at the stars overhead.

“After what happened in the church parking lot, and sitting here under the stars with you, I’m convinced it’s something much more than that. I’m not sure what exactly, but whatever it is, it’s too big to keep inside of me, because here I am telling you.”

“Daisuke…” Kate said lovingly.

Daisuke turned his head to face Kate, “I’d like to share it with you, if you would allow me the privilege of being your boyfriend.”

They looked into each others eyes for a moment. Then in one quick movement, Kate turned to her right and pulled herself in to kiss Daisuke, knocking them both down onto the blanket, one on top of the other.

Daisuke’s right hand found Kate’s left hand, and intertwined with it just before Kate broke the kiss and laid her head on his shoulder.

“Should I take that as a ‘yes’?” Daisuke said smiling.

“Absolutely.” Kate said dreamily, lightly squeezing Daisuke’s hand.

Daisuke wrapped his left arm around Kate’s back, holding her close as they slowly drifted off to sleep under the stars.

***

‘What a great dream!’ Kate thought to herself, not yet opening her eyes. ‘That’s the best one of Daisuke yet!’

It was then that Kate opened her eyes and found herself lying next to Daisuke, on a blanket, under a tree, in the park, mid-morning.

“It wasn’t a dream!” She exclaimed softly. She rested her hand on Daisuke and whispered in his ear, “Good morning Daisuke!”

Daisuke woke promptly, hearing Kate’s sweet voice. He turned towards her and smiled.

“Good. It was just a dream.” He said softly as he brushed a few strands of hair off of Kate’s face. When he saw her confused expression he continued. “In my dream I was a lesser me, and you wouldn’t have me. But it was just a dream. You said yes.” He smiled.

“Yes, but I would have you no matter what.” She said reassuringly. “As long as you’re you.’ She gave Daisuke a quick peck on the lips, then stood up.

“Our parents are probably wondering where we both are.” Kate said as she took out her cell phone.

“Oh yeah.” Daisuke said, sitting up.

“Hey Risa!” Kate said, holding the phone to her ear. “Can you do me a favor? If my mom asks, I spent last night over at your house, alright?…I’ll tell you at school. Thanks Risa! Bye!” She finished and hung up the phone.

Daisuke stood up.

“Well, I guess we should both be heading home.” He said as he began gathering up the blanket.

“Ya.” Kate agreed as they both got their bikes then came back to each other. Daisuke put his arm around Kate and embraced her. He kissed her one last time before letting her go.

“See you at school tomorrow Daisuke!” Kate said as they mounted their bikes.

“Bye Kate, see you then!” He smiled. Then they both took off, each in their own direction.
