Come Too Easy

How do you describe a feeling such as love? Is it really love? Did you ever think it could just be obsession, infatuation, the desire to need what you can never obtain?

Jesse wasn’t your typical teenager, he wasn’t into sports, acting butch around his friend by describing how he’d nailed so many bitches. The quiet type, he studied hard and was left undiscovered by the rest of his class for many, many weeks, when Jesse started his new year at school, this all changed.

Reese Brown, local jock moved in from the other class. Instantly Jesse’s heart jumped, his chest ignoring as if someone had just lit a roaring inferno with a single spark. Jesse was 14; he’d not discovered sex, attraction to either gender or anything remotely sexual. He never saw the point in relationships; they just existed in school to see which would dump the other first.

As if Reese wasn’t on his mind all of the time, he’d suddenly appeared in majority of his classes, Science, English, Maths and French. He’d never of known it then, that French class would be the one thing he’d look forward too in his entire week. In French Jesse sat 2 foot from this boy, he adored silently for no reason but because that’s how he felt.

Over a few weeks of French, Reese had begun to notice Jesse existed, everytime he caught him looking at him: Jesse’s heart would feel as if someone just pierced it with a flaming arrow, his mouth went dry as the fire roared inside his heart.

“Do you get a word of this?” his voice whispered trying not to alert the teacher at the front of class pointing wildly to different types of food and drink. “Y-yeah” His heart had managed to jam itself in his throat now, still on fire.

“Well you see mangé is to eat and boire is drink” No idea how the hell he’d managed to pay attention to the lesson these past few weeks but it somehow stuck, and God was it coming into perfect use.

“Oh, I thought it was the other way around, cheers. What’s your name?” His heart stopped. Dead. He’d only asked him for his name, and he felt like he was going to die. “Jesse” He finally choked out after Reese’s perfect face sort of nudged as if to say ‘sometime today’.

“Reese.” His eyes had narrowed and fixed on him as if he was checking he wasn’t a threat to his alpha male like stature.

“Jesse?” Jesse’s eyes darted back into focus from his daze about Reese, he was smitten and they’d barely spoken at all. How was this at all logical? “Yes?” Jesse’s word shot out fast, hopefully they didn’t seem dripping with love/addiction. “You wouldn’t happen to want to –“ Jesse’s heart stopped again, in fact he never really recalled it starting back up. Reese’s attention quickly turned mid sentence to the front of the class where Mrs Watson has changed the projection sheet to meats and pastries, randomly selecting people to say random sentences about what they love and what they hate. “Erm, you were . . . s-saying?”

His head turned back to Jesse, the clear blue eyes locking him back into a trance of heart squeezing chest feeling. “Oh, sorry. Can I copy your work? She lost me at the goat-er word.” Jesse has to pull his brain back into working motion to connect the fact Reese’s lips were moving and that words were coming out. “Goûter.” He had no idea how his brain was able to listen and take in the lesson’s work, as well as telling his hands to take notes whilst his eyes, heart and every other living limb were fixed on the amazing fascination of Reese Brown. “Yeah.” He snapped his fingers and pointed at Jesse all in a second long motion, that was way over emphasized but to Jesse it was just another thing to adore and be infatuated with.

Jesse turned his book around so Reese could read and copy all of the stuff he never did, which was most of the lesson minus the date and title. “So what do you do?” The fact Jesse didn’t know how to answer this question, was hardly something slightly unnoticeable, Reese cocked his head to snap him out of the wiz of jock like replies he could muster but none made it to his lips. “ . . . Outside of school?” Reese added to his question. Jesse remained silent trying to think of more common answers so he didn’t seem like a total freak who liked to watch Buffy, reading Anne Rice and play Zelda until 3am in the morning.

“Well, you don’t seem to be into any of the stuff the other lads are into, like max power or ought.” Finally Jesse’s brain resurfaced, “Erm, I read and play the Nintendo” Jesse’s brain clapped sarcastically calling him a total moron, all that thinking time and making yourself seem like a retard and that’s the best you could do, the truth. Although, Reese’s eyes lit up slightly. “Gamecube?”

“Yeah” His eyes worried if and tried to detect if; it was interest or an opportunity to abuse his taste in gaming platform that was going to come next. “What games do you like?” Blank staring at cute strangers didn’t seem like an adequate response. “Erm, Zelda. Mostly” Jesse’s head dropped slightly as if he was expecting a reply to bash the franchise he’d adored since he was 7, but just the opposite happened. “You like Zelda? I love Zelda, you got Ocarina of Time?” Wow, this boy was not only, not an asshole, but he shared interests. “Yeah, and Majora’s Mask” The first time his voice had an ounce of confidence in it.

“I haven’t played that one” An opportunity to speak to him again and again, just like that a connection seemed to exist and it wasn’t just one sided either. “It’s a great game, you really should play it” A light bulb clicked on inside his head. “You can borrow it, if you want.” Finally his brain was amounting to something besides an inventory of French confectionary. The boy’s eyes were ignited, as if someone has just snatched down some star and wedged them into those two perfect pale blue orbs. “Really? That’d be perfect.” This tender moment was interrupted by the school bell ringing loudly signally the end of class. “hey, do you have Science with Mrs Robinson after first break?”

“Yeah, I do” Jesse’s heart was now bungee jumping inside his torso, hitting every organ on its course, making his entire body feel warm, sharp, fuzzy and slightly phased without showing any sign to onlookers. “Cool, you wanna come with me and tell me about Majora’s Mask during break?” He thought he was going to die, like his heart was going to suddenly crash hard into his ribs and explode. “Sure!” With that, both of them got up and left for the courtyard swapping details about Zelda: Ocarina of Time they both loved and hated.

Jesse wondered what sour would accompany this sweet, sweet SWEET experience.
