“Tell me, Trinity!” I begged. I tugged on my babysitter-cum-best friend’s arm. Who do you think is prettier? Who do you like most?”
“Kiri-“ Trinity started to protest.
“Who, Trinity?” my twin sister Kari asked. She tugged on his other arm. “Me or Kiri?”
Trinity sighed, a sound that meant either he was becoming annoyed at us or resigned to answering. Either way we would get an answer. He looked from me to Kari then back again. I knew he was trying to decide which of us was prettier but my sister and I were one of less than ten sets of identical boy-girl twins ever born. We were exactly the same right down to our clothing and hair styles. How am I supposed to decide who’s prettier?” he asked. “You’re fucking identical.”
Kari and I giggled. Trinity was thirteen, two years older than us, and the only person to ever use what our mother termed ‘bad language’ in front of us. “Who do you like best?” Kari persisted. “Me or Kiri?”
“Umm,” Trinity said. “Kiri? I guess?”
I grinned. That was the answer I had been hoping for. Over the past couple of months, ever since the end of school and the start of summer vacation, I had been experiencing strange feelings for Trinity, feelings that seemed to center somewhere low in my stomach and cause me to feel all warm and gooey inside whenever he was around and made me hope he liked me more than he liked my sister.
But Kari just had to go and spoil that. She giggled. “But you can’t like Kiri best,” she said. “He’s a boy and you’re a boy and boys don’t like other boys best.”
“Why not?” he asked. “You two are identical, aren’t you? You look exactly the same.”
“But we’ll change once we get older, “Kari pointed out. But I hoped not. I wanted this summer to last forever.
Trinity rolled his eyes. “In that case I guess I like Kari best,” he said with a shrug.
I suddenly could not wait for the summer to end but I knew I would never forget the day my first love rejected me in favor of my own identical twin sister.
