Chapter One: First Encounter

"I don't hang with church-goers," he stated coldly, his icy glare making the hairs on the back of Mak's neck stand erect.

"Why not?" the blonde wondered, feeling uneasy.

"Because you're all full of shit," Chester answered blandly as he took another drag from his cigarette. Mak watched as he blew a smoke ring, his eyes following until it vanished.

"Why do you say that?" the shorter boy demanded, almost afraid of angering the punk standing in front of him.

"Have you actually ever thought about your religion?" Chester said, answering the question with another question.

"Well, I pray nearly everyday," Mak defended.

"That's not what I meant," the taller male replied angrily, his patience quickly disappearing.

"Don't you every question why you've devoted your life to your beliefs?" he continued after a moment's silence.

"No," Mak responded, his eyes fixating themselves to the ground.

"You're parents are like this, too, aren't they?" Chester assumed, flicking his finished cigarette to the pavement.

Lost in his thoughts, the blonde numbly nodded his head.

"If you keep blindly following your faith, your life will go nowhere," the taller boy advised, getting up from his position on the stairs. He stretched momentarily before heading down the deserted alley, disappearing from Mak's view.

"Wait!" the blonde exclaimed, peering desperately around the grimy brick wall in search of the mysterious boy who made him question what his life was about.

Dejectedly, Mak started walking home, thinking about what the punk had said before he left.

Before he arrived at his house, the blonde decided that he wouldn't attend church next Sunday.

Without an answer to his parent's questions as he walked in late, Mak headed to his room. He crawled into bed, his thoughts racing until he fell into a deep dream-filled slumber.
