Prologue

A wistful smile crossed her face. Sitting at the kitchen counter she could pretend that things weren't what they were. She could erase all the pain from her mind, she could wash all her problems away for at least a brief moment. She could laugh, smile, and joke with no one the wiser.

Out of the corner of her eye she could see the way he looked at her. His name was Jeremy Townsend, and he was a fine looking man. Clad in a black muscle t-shirt, a pair of vintage jeans that hung loosely off his hips, and a pair of worn in black boots didn't help what was running through her mind right now.

She was taken, she knew this, but for some reason her body just wouldn't listen. She found herself leaning farther over the counter looking deep into his brown eyes and letting his voice wash over her like a warm spring shower.

Maybe that why without even thinking about she got up to follow him outside. Maybe she had been so intent on memorizing every single one of his features she didn't realize that she had even moved from the bar stool she had been sitting on. Not until the cool air brushed up against the bare skin of her arm.

"I need to focus," she thought, "I have a boyfriend who loves me very much and whom I love just as much."

A little voice inside her spoke up,"But if he loves you why isn't he home yet? Why hasn't he called?"

"Because....because the event is running longer than he thought it would and...and his probably doesn't have a signal. Yes...yes that's why."

"He could use another phone and you know it. You know he's out there drinking, flirting with other women, and living it up. Why not give him a taste of his own medicine? You know you want to."

"Shut-up", she told herself," just SHUT-UP!"

Feeling something brush her arm she jumped.

"Are you alright?"

The concerned look in his eyes made her realize she had been tugging on her hair and her thumbnail was in her mouth. She lowered her hands back to her sides and nodded her head.

"Yes, I'm just...cold and I think I'm getting a...a headache" she stammered.

"Well I can't do much about your headache but I might be able to help the cold factor a little bit" he replied. Gently he nudged her till she stood almost behind him with her body slightly angled towards his.

"How's that?," he asked.

"Better, much better" she replied with a small smile. She could feel her face getting redder and redder by the minute as he studied her.

An awkward silence seemed to envelope them as she just stood there her eyes locked with his. It seemed she couldn't think of anything to say to break the quiet. Well at least nothing rated PG-13. Minutes ticked by slowly before finally he said something.

"So did you come out here to smoke or to work on catching a cold?"

She blushed as she realized he knew she had followed him out here for no reason. Judging by the teasing tone in his voice he didn't seem to mind though. Still she didn't want to seem like a complete fool.

"To smoke why else would I be out here?"

Her eyes slightly widened. She couldn't believe it, here she was flirting with a perfect stranger pretty much and enjoying it! This was definetley going to be an interesting evening. Especially judging by his smirk there seemed to be something she was missing.

"That's interesting since you left your pack of cigarettes and your lighter on the counter in there," he said gesturing to them sitting in plain view.

"Oh...well I was hoping you would share."

"Well now I guess that makes sense."

He handed her his lighter and one of his Camels. Placing the cigarette against her lips she tried to light it. Unfortunatley her hands were shaking so bad from the cold she couldn't seem to keep the damn thing lit long enough.

Softly he laughed as he gentley pulled the lighter from her grasp and deftly lit it. "Here let me."

"Thanks" she mumbled, a blush starting to creep its way up from her neck to her face. "God he must think I'm so pathetic. I can't even light my own freakin' cigarette" she thought to herself.

Embarrassed she looked everywhere but at him. She smoked the cigarette as quickly as she could, and mumbled another thank you before she slipped back inside.

Throught out the rest of the evening she alternated between avoiding Jeremy, keeping an eye on the clock, and a fresh drink in her hand at all times. It wasn't long though before five a.m. rolled around and out of the fifteen or so people that the night had started out with, only the two of them remained.

Things got hazy right around then as well. No longer was she trying to keep as much distance as possible between them. Instead she now sat as close to him as she dared, letting her thigh brush up against his from time to time. Even the arguements in her head had faded till she could no longer remember what she had been trying to convince herself of.

Eventually time itself faded away and the next thing she knew the bright morning sun was peeking through the blinds and grazing across her closed eyelids. Sitting up the first thing she became aware of was the sound of drums pounding in her head. The second was thing was that she was laying in someone elses' bed without a stitch of clothing on.

She closed her eyes again for a brief second hoping that when she opened them she would be at home in her own bed, and this was all nothing more than a bad dream. No such luck. A sick feeling began growing in the pit of her stomach as bits and pieces of last night began flashing in her mind. She dreaded the thought of having to look over to her left. But she needed to know if her suspicions were correct, and sure enough there was Jeremy sound asleep as naked as she was, still sleeping soundly.

Without a moments hesitation she slipped out of the bed and began to dress, trying to be as quiet as possible. Which was no easy feat since her clothes were flung all over the room and she could only seem to find one shoe. Finally she just decided to make a run for it one shoe or not. She couldn't risk him waking up and having to deal with whatever would happen next. So after one last glance over her shoulder she grabbed her purse and slipped out the door. Hurrying down the hallway as fast as she could she hoped she made it outside and to her car before anyone woke up. That would be almost as bad as Jeremy waking up right now.

As she passed through the living room she was relieved to notice that from the looks of the few people passed out on the couches and the floor, she was in no danger of anyone waking up anytime soon and noticing her hasty departure.

Still she didn't start to breathe easy until she was outside and in her car, safely on her way home. She reached into her purse and pulled out a cigarette. After lighting it she took a few drags and focused on breathing in and out. Once she repeated this a few times she started to concot a story to tell her boyfriend whom most likely was now at home waiting for her, and wondering where his girlfriend had gotten herself off to. Meanwhile shoving the whole memory of last night and part of this morning into the deep dark recesses of her mind, hoping she would never have to think about them again.....
