1. By Chance
Wake up.
Sami’s eyes opened just long enough to let the sun pound against her skull. It was certainly far too bright out for her liking, and she was far too hung over to handle it. And to add more shit to the bad morning, she knew her day had to begin sometime, and that sometime was now.
She swung her legs over the edge of the bed, leaving the warmth of the comforter, and surrendering herself to the cool, crisp air of her bedroom. Pushing off of the mattress, she padded barefoot to the bathroom door – one thing on her mind, and that was to take a nice, long, hot shower. Before she knew it, she was dressed, keys in hand, and stepping out of her front door.
The air was humid, as it always was in Nebraska, and within moments of walking outside, her hair was already starting to frizz up. With an irritated sigh, Sami ran her hand through her brown hair, praying to God to be merciful to her for just one day. Of course, nothing changed, and with only a little falter in her steps, she blended into the thin crowd of walkers and began the long seven mile trip to work.

“I could pick you up.” Chris rolled his eyes at Sami’s stubborn stance. Sure, he lived on the other side of the neighborhood and didn’t drive anywhere close to her house in the mornings, but when one is in love – something Sami worked very hard on to ignore – one goes out of their way to show it.
“And I can walk,” Sami persisted, turning away from him and walking back to her office. Chris followed closely behind, not having any work to do, and seeing no reason why he couldn’t. Sami almost yelled at him to leave her alone, but luckily for Chris, she managed to control her temper for the time being. “Really Chris, you worry about me too much, I can survive walking to work.” Chris sat in one of the oversized chairs opposite Sami’s desk, where she sat and turned on her computer.
“I can’t help it.” Sami snorted. That was a very true (yet horribly pathetic) reason. Over the years, Chris had become, not only in love with her, but insanely obsessive. A highly unattractive trait in her eyes. Perhaps it was Chris’s looks that had helped her with deciding if she should snap at him to leave her alone or not. He was thin, but not a twig, the shirts he wore were always tight enough to show that he did have a little big of muscle and meat on him, although not much. His hair was cut short, and he was always well kept – something most women love about a man. But those traits, however, weren’t enough to keep Sami interested. For the most part, it was Chris’s possessive attitude towards her that practically forced her to turn her head away.
Sighing, Sami turned her attention to her computer, giving Chris an obvious hint to leave. He sat there a moment longer, daring to openly admire her while he still had an opportunity. God, she was stunning in his eyes. Her brown hair was cut to her shoulders and completely straight, albeit a few uncontrollable strands sticking out here and there. He smirked at her as he stood from the chair, but knowing she didn’t see it.

Aiden Harte stared empty eyed at the woman across the table, who was currently sobbing into the palms of her hands. Had she really believed he would stay forever? She knew very well from the beginning of his commitment problems, and yet she had become attached… too attached.
Aiden reached across the table, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. She let him touch her for only a moment before shrinking away, as if she had just woken up and realized that his touch burned her skin like fire. Ugh, it made him want to yell, and surprisingly enough, he wanted to yell at her. It was her own fault she got hurt, she was the one who fell in love.
“I’m sorry, Sarah.” His statement was answered with quiet sniffles. He didn’t want to hurt her, he never did, but he wasn’t going to continue in a relationship that was going nowhere. Maybe they could still be friends. He doubted the idea the second it came to his mind. He never remained friends with his ex’s. Or anyone of the opposite sex for that matter, always ending up sleeping with each other and what not.
He gave Sarah’s shoulder a pat, standing from the chair. She raised her head to look at him one last time, (seeing that they weren’t likely ever going to see each other again) the wild red hair framing her face hindered her view of him. Quite symbolic, she would never be able to get a clear picture of him now. Wiping her tears with one swift, graceful movement, that only women seem capable of, she locked her gaze with Aiden’s, daring to show him her true feelings. It didn’t have the desired effect she had hoped for. Instead, he looked at her with emotionless eyes, completely unfazed by her heartbroken expression.
“I’ll miss you,” she whispered, hoping that something, anything, might change his mind. He gave her a smirk, but it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Same to you.” Her eyes tightened, the frown on her face turning into a full blown scowl. Wrong thing to say, Aiden thought, taking a step back as if she was about to physically harm him.
“Do you not even care?” Yes, he wanted to yell at her, you’d end up getting hurt later, so why not end this pointless thing now? She must have read his mind, she stopped crying, an expression on realization appearing on her face. Oh yes, she understood fine. She got that point across very well, he thought, walking out of the café with a red mark on his cheek. What a bitch!

“This place is never this busy!” Ryan yelled, or rather screamed, in Aiden’s ear. The sports bar was packed full, not a seat left in the place, and still more people arriving every five minutes or so.
“Big game,” Aiden yelled back with a roll of his eyes. “We are all gunna need lots of beers after the Huskers get their asses handed to them.” Ryan laughed, taking another sip of the beer in his hands.
“That is for certain.” Aiden nodded his head, his eyes already glued to the television screen hanging on the wall. “Where’s Sarah? I was just startin’ to get use to her hanging on your arm all the time.” Ryan glanced at Aiden’s expression, getting his answer instantly. “That didn’t last long. What, a good twenty days?”
“Fuck you, asshole.” Ryan only laughed, not offended by the words. “You’re just jealous that you can’t do that… them breakin’ up with you all the time!” Aiden dragged his eyes away from the T.V., a scowl on his face, but his eyes filled with good natured humor.
“Good things there’s lots of people here, or else you’d be dead,” Ryan threatened, not really putting much effort into making it sound believable.
“Speakin’ of the people here, who’s that with Chris Ryle?” Ryan looked over his shoulder for the man in question, his eyes widening in surprise at the sight of two women on his arms, although one did appear uninterested while the other flirted shamelessly.
“The brown haired one is Sami Douglass, I met her once – really nice woman. Not sure who the black haired woman is, damn good lookin’ though.” Aiden nodded his head in agreement, already weighing up the possibility of speaking to her. He glanced once at the Sami woman, she hardly compared to the black haired lady she and Chris were walking with.
Chris led them to the bar, the grin on his face growing wider as more heads turned to star at the beauty beside him.
“Ryan, what’s goin’ on my friend?” Chris yelled, finally reaching the bar. “Aiden, long time, eh?”
Aiden nodded his head, his eyes, however, still glued to the dark haired woman. “Who’s your friend?” The beauty met his gaze with a pair of the most stunning green eyes he had ever seen.
“Paige Hines,” she introduced herself, stepping away from Chris’s arm to get closer to Aiden. Chris didn’t seem phased, his attention once more on Sami. “And you are?”
“Aiden Harte,” he replied, shaking her hand. “This is Ryan Day, no one worth knowing.” Ryan snorted, turning his back on him to talk more directly to Chris and Sami.
“How’s it goin?” Paige shrugged her shoulders, sitting on the unoccupied stool beside him.
“Sami wanted me to come here with her; she doesn’t like going anywhere alone with Chris anymore. He’s too obsessive or something.” Aiden looked at Sami once more, deciding she was officially off limits. He may be a man, but he was most loyal to friends, he would never interfere on their relationships.
“They’re a couple then?” He really didn’t care if they were or not, he just had nothing else to say.
“No, but Chris is working on it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are by tomorrow.”
“Good for them… I guess.” Paige laughed, a beautiful sound, it matched her perfectly.
“Sami isn’t too interested, that’s why they haven’t moved forward yet, or that’s what she says.” Paige yelled for the bartender, ordering a beer. Aiden took another sip of his own, watching Paige out of the corner of his eye.
“What about you? Is there a man that’s going to kick my ass in a couple of seconds because I’m talkin’ to you?” Paige smiled and shook her head, her eyes filled with amusement.
“Not yet.”
***
This was going even worse than Sami had anticipated. Paige had found someone she was obviously interested in – plain to see after Sami noticed the man’s hand resting on her thigh. With a sigh, Sami turned her attention back to the conversation Ryan and Chris were having.
“I bet they lose by at least twenty,” Ryan betted, shaking Chris’s hand to finalize the deal.
“I know I’m going to lose.” Sami smiled at Chris. His laid back personality had always made her envious.
“Are you insulting me?” Sami’s brow furrowed in confusion, Ryan’s question completely throwing her off.
“Yeah, actually, you need a better paying job.” Ryan’s laughter drowned out all the other sounds around them. Sami looked at him with open admiration. If she ever got with a man in the near future, she would want him to be something like Ryan.
“Too bad man, you’re just jealous of my extracurricular activities.” Sami turned away from them, not at all interested in hearing about the activities Ryan was taking part in, and more likely than not, they involved another female. With an irritated sigh, Sami picked of the beer Chris bought her and took a swig. Go figure, she thought, the one man that I would actually consider dating, probably has every STD in the book.
Disgusting!
