Yakuza'a Aren't So Bad

Hanama walked into the convince store with full knowledge that his shadows were close behind him. There was no one behind the counter so he docked behind it, just as the door chimed to announce his followers’ arrival. He held his breath, hearing their footsteps nearing the counter, hoping fruitlessly that his gigantic form would not be seen. He was just about to stand up, giving up on the chase when the voice of an angel spoke.

“Konnichiwa. Welcome to Katakura’s Family Market, were the best in fish and vegetables are sold. How can I help you today?”

The two men turned to look at the women who appeared from the back of the store.

“Did anyone come into the store just now?”

The woman shakes her head. “No just yourselves.”

One of the men grunt and walked out of the store followed by the other. Hanama breathed a sigh of relief on hearing the door chime again.

“Are you all right?”

“Itai!”

Hanama rubbed his head where he had banged it on the counter top. He sat on the floor nursing his bruised skull when he caught a good look at his angel. She was undeniably a rare beauty for Osaka, Japan. Not too many Americans came to Japan and even fewer that were of African-American descent, but her mahogany brown skin look sot and pliable. It seemed all those M&M commercials were thinking of her when they said “chocolate that melts in your mouth not in your hands.” In no ways was she small like those salad eating girls that fell at his feet for his attention, but a tall, curvy beauty with fat in all the right places. Something to cushion and tighten the impact of his man not threatens to break him in two. Hanama himself stood about 6’ 1”, he could imagine that her head came to just about his chest. In all forms she was quite a lady.

Naji stood under the lusty scrutiny of this man. She was flattered that he would look that way at her, but he was very intimidating. While Hanama continued to survey Naji, she did the same to him. What she found pleased her to no end.

‘He has to be of mixed blood. I haven’t seen anyone that large in Japan in the two months I have been here. Green eyes. Long Black Hair. A physique to die for. Who is he trying to kid.’

Hanama stood up bring himself closer to Naji. Gasping nervously, Naji made an introduction.

“Konnichiwa. Naji Diamond desu. Gakusee no Tokyo Daigakusee desu. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. Ogenki desuka?”

“Hai, genki desu. Hanama Kenjiro desu. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. Your Japanese is very good. Where did you learn?”

“At college in my home country, America.”

“Are you a foreign Exchange student then?”

“Hai. I am working on an English degree.”

Hanama was about to ask something else when the door chimed, reveling the two men that came in earlier.

“I knew you where here Hanama. Stop this childishness and let’s go.” The man said with a disapproving look to Naji who looked confusingly at Hanama.

“You know them?”

“Yeah they are kind of my guardians. Hidan-san. Makihanma-san. Meet Naji Diamond.”

“Just who the hell are you?” Naji nearly shouted, disgruntled, and confused.

“You will not talk to Boss Hanama like that, little girl. You will show proper respect, I don’t care if you are a citizen of Japan or not.”

Heido, upset because the disrespect shown to his Kouji, moved toward Naji, but Hanama moved in front of him.

“Leave her alone Heido-san. I do not wish for her to be afraid.” Hanama said that with a pointed glare and turned to Naji.

“Gomen. Hidan-san can be a little overprotective. Don’t take his words to harshly.

“Iie. I am at fault.” She turned to Hidan-san. “Gomen please forgive my disrespect. I had no idea who I was talking too. Please forgive my American ways.”

Naji bowed deeply, her eyes on the floor.

Hidan-san grunted and turned back to Boss Hanama. He said “It’s time to go”, and then walked out the door. Makihanma-san followed quietly behind him.

“I am really sorry about that. Hidan-san is a really great guy if you get to know him.”

Naji rose from her bow and went behind the counter resting her back against the wall.

“Thankfully, I will not get a chance to find out for myself or to find out what kind of Boss you really are.”

Hanama looked into her eyes, at the fiery hatred that smoldered just beneath their depths. But despite the warnings flashing, he still approached her.

“Why wouldn’t we get to know each other? I am sure that we will get along just fine given time.”

“I don’t want anything to do with you, Yakuza!”

So much scorn was put into that one word. Hanama stepped back from the painful bite to look at his angel differently. But just at the moment she did not look like an angel but a demon. A very livid demon.

“What do you have against the Yakuza? What have they done to you?”

The rage in his angel’s eyes turned to deep sorrow. Whatever has happened to her, the damage was still raw.

The sadness went away as quickly as it appeared and he was given a bright smile by his angel.

Gomen. I have said such awful things. Please forgive me.” Naji bowed again. “I have to get back to work, is there anything that I can get for you.”

Hanama heard the unspoken hint to leave and figured that the situation had become uncomfortable. Alright it is enough for today. He walked to the door, which chimed when he opened it, before turning back to Naji. “I will be back some other time, Naji.”

“That is not necessary. Like I said before, I have nothing more to do with a Yakuza like you.”

“I will make sure that you do my angel” he said before closing the door.

“Now Reiko-san, remember Boss Hanama is a serious and honored man. Do not do anything that would upset him and Stop Twisting Your Hair! What am I going to do with you?! This is an opportunity of a lifetime and just look at you?

Fujiwa-san looked disapprovingly at her youngest daughter. She wore an out of season dress from 10 years ago that was bright yellow with black and white polka dots thrown across it, her worn white sandals where visible scuffed and a bow was missing from one of her shoes, her bottle cap glasses where broken on one side and she was reading War and Peace.

Her mother sighed in relinquish and fell into a chair, fanning herself.

“If only we hadn’t married your sister off last year. Now she was a lady. Well dressed, sociable, and elegant. Now she took after her mother. You, you on the other hand take after your father, kami rest his soul, a scholar. Why did your mother ever take to a scholar? You know your mother had so many suitors after her. Why your grandfather…

Reiko tuned her mother out at this point. It was going to be another reverting story about her mother’s younger days a long, long time ago. Oba-san had gotten a good start describing one suitor after another to her when her cell phone ringed.

Of course, something more to distract her from her book.

But it turned out to be a welcomed distraction from her new friend.

“Moshi Mosh. Reiko desu.” Her mother did not notice her daughter’s lack of attention and continued to rattle on oblivious to the world around her.

“Reiko-chan! It’s me, Naji. You won’t believe what happened to me today!”

“Oh? What is up?” She said flipping to the next page of her book.

Naji laughed a little at her friends attempt at humor and went on to retell the day’s events. She did not stop until she was completely through.

“And then he sent over bouquet of white roses with an invitation to dinner next weekend, like I automatically go out with a guy Just because he sent me flowers. I don’t like this guy. He’s too forward.”

“But I thought you like the forward guys that where big and hunky.” Next page.

Naji laughed. “Where did you learn that one Reiko? No one says hunky anymore. And besides he’s a yakuza, Reiko. I don’t want to get involved with the Yakuza again. Not ever again. No office Reiko.”

Even though the girls had only known each other a couple of months, Naji and Reiko had formed a unique bond that no one else understood. One tall, Asian girl, with bad fashion sense, and a cold, almost expressionless face befriends an African American, bombshell, with passionate personality. They told each other everything, nothing being left unsaid.

Next page. “I guess this is the part when I am supposed to say ‘Not all Yakuza are bad. Look at me I am a Yakuza.’ And stuff like that. But for now just follow your instincts.” Flip.

“Thanks Reiko, I really apprec-… Hey! You are reading a book right now aren’t you?!”

Reiko tuned into her mother and heard that she was winding down on her life history.

“Sorry Naji, I have to go see you tomorrow, ne? Ja ne.”

“Wait you litt-”

Reiko hung up the phone as her mother turned to her.

“And that’s why mama just wants the best that she had to you Reiko. You understand?

Reiko rolled her eyes and went to open the door. A servant was on the other side posed to knock on the door. Startled, she regained her composure.

“Master Hanama will see you know, Lady Reiko. Please follow me.”

Reiko smiled to herself a plan forming in her head. She knew the perfect way to get out of this predicament she was in.
