Brother's: Ground, Sea and Sky

Brother's Ground, Sea and Sky

Before there was man, animals, plants, the Sun or the Moon, there was Mother. Mother was a tall woman with an elegant neck, strong shoulders, rosy cheeks, round breasts, flat feet and long black flowing hair. Her eyes were a emerald green, that shined like the reflection of Sister Moon on clear, crystal water. She wore a long, woven dress, that floated around her like clouds, pure, white and beautiful. Her hair was decorated with long, glowing beads- shinning, shimmering, and twinkling with the reflections of light from the Sun Temple.

In the Temple lived Father. Father was a large man, with a broad chest and thick thighs. His bronze shinned paled in comparison to his golden hair and brilliant blue eyes. His clothes formed over him like Brother Thunder forms over Choctaw mounds, bringing with him Brother Wind and Sister Rain.

Everyday when Father arose he looked out his window and watched Mother. She dipped her finger into the blackness cold space, and would smooth the wrinkles in Time. Then, she would pull one of her many delicate beads from her hair and place it over the smoothened wrinkle- to hold it in place for eternity. Sometimes, Mother would become bored, and use the empty space as her canvas. She would make many pictures of creatures from her imagination, using her unique beads, thus, Mother created the stars.

Father became hungry for mother and everyday, he spoke to her. "Come into my Temple," He told her, "I will make you my Queen, and you will rule, forever my Queen."

But everyday, Mother would refuse, telling him that she did not wish to be a Queen. That she did not wish to rule forever as a Queen. All she wanted was more of her delightful canvas. Father finally convinced Mother to give him a task, one, only the most worthy of herself could fulfill. Mother smiled to herself as she realized the perfect task to give Father.

"Make me a canvas Father. Not flat, but never ending, but small enough so that I may walk around it an marvel at my creations. Enough space to hold my millions of creatures, but never once lose it's balance. Id you can create such a thing, if you can do this Father, I will enter you Temple, and I will be your Queen- and rule forever."

For many nights Father thought hard about Mother's task. Perhaps he was not worthy of her? Nonsense, he was, after all, Father. It wasn't until Father prayed to Grandfather that he received his answer. Grandfather was the wisest, oldest and most noble of those who resided in the Temple. He had a long, white beard, paled eyes, and an aged face. He was a gentle man, but he carried the universe on his back like warriors carry their arrows.

"You must listen carefully to what I tell you Father, for it should not be forgotten. Make Mother a canvas, a circle all around so it is not to be flat in any way, and it will be never ending- but make it small enough so that Mother's pale face may shine all around it. Give it a sturdy ground so that it may hold Mother's many creations, bit do not give it's space a limit, so they may not be confided to legs. So not let Mother create something that is not canceled out by something else." Grandfather spoke. "But remember Father, Mother may enter your Temple- but you are never to enter Mother's, for the outcome shall be the downfall of Mother's canvas."

Father nodded and left the Temple, gathering empty space, he compacted it into a single form, circle all around, with a sturdy surface, and no limit to its space. Save the field he placed around the new planet to hold the air that would give life to and support Mother's creatures. Thus, he created the Earth and the atmosphere.

The next day, as mother dipped her finger into space, fixes the many wrinkles in Time, held them down with her beads- that shined, shimmered, and twinkled- Father approached her.

"Mother, you may enter my Temple. For I have made your canvas." Father exclaimed- pulling the planet out for her to see, "I have made it never ending, yet you make walk around it to your hearts desire, and hold it if you'd like. It is sturdy, so it will hold your many creations and give them life. It is what you have asked for, I have delivered- am I worthy?"

Mother took the planet and twinkled it in her hands, her pictures and beads forgotten. He had done all that she had asked for and more. "Yes Father, you are worthy."

Mother took Father's extended hand, placing the planet on the ground. She stood, but as she did so, she accidentally tipped the planet ever so slightly with her foot, causing to spin ever so slightly. Had mother been paying attention instead of staring into Father's deep blue eyes, she might have noticed this and corrected it. But she did not, thus, Mother unintentionally created a planet that rotated on an axis.

Father took Mother into his grand Temple. As Mother looked around, her mind became dazed by the beauty everything in Father's Sun Temple- amazed at how it all shined, shimmered, and twinkled in it's own magnificent way. Father, who had become ignorant of Grandfather's warning, led Mother into his chambers and made her his Queen. Mother, who was still very dazed, did nothing to stop Father in doing so.

Within days Mother knew she was to bare child. She fled from the Temple and ran back into her space, hiding in the darkness that protected her so heroically. Father feared that something was wrong with Mother, or that she might be hurt and went to search for Mother. But she was not to be found.

Meanwhile, Mother knew her time to bare a child had come. But, unlike she expected, she did not bare one child- but three young boys. She named the eldest Ground, for her had been the hardest to deliverer. She named the middle child Sea- he was the easier one to deliverer. And she named her third child and most high spirited Sky, because she did not even realize that she'd had him.

Ground was the least logical of her sons- but he strongest in body. He believed all of his Mother's creations should live in one place, with peace and harmony and sturdy legs to walk on so that it may move where ever it wants. Ground had long, shaggy brown hair and light hazel eyes. He was strong and tall built, with a warriors mien, He wore many feathers in his hair, and a warrior breast plate. He wore heavy shoes on his feet so that he didn't hurt himself when he was running across his Mother's many beads.

Sea was the most deceptive and cunning of his brothers. He did not have much strength in comparison to Ground, but he was much more logical, always trying to find reasons for the things around him. He had his Mother's midnight black hair and her emerald green eyes. He wore only on feather in his hair- which was wrapped around his headband. He had a shawl that he threw over his left shoulder. He did not bother with shoes- because instead of walking across Mother's beads, he slid under them.

Sky, the youngest and happiest of the brothers, was Mother's favorite. He was always about, trying to sway his brother's Ground and Sea, but he never staying in one place too long. Sky had his father's golden hair and deep blue eyes. He loved to wear just his plain breech cloth, to cover his legs so he didn't cut himself- cavorting about the way he did. He wore very light shoes, but the didn't do much- seeing as he did not walk across the beads- and he did not slide under the beads- he jumped over them.

Mother watched her son's grow from babies, to toddlers, to boys, all the way up to stout young men. And then, she felt sad, lonely and forgotten. How was she to teach her son to be men if she was not one? Had Father moved on and left her to the coldness of her space? Mother knitted her brows together in angry at her thoughts. She gathered her beads, her canvas, and her sons and made her way back to the Sun Temple.

Father stood by the door, he had not moved since his Queen had left, her empty planet still sat waiting for her to return- spinning. While her canvas still sat still unwrinkled, still shining and still twinkling. When Father saw Mother, he was overjoyed. He took her into his arms and kissed her face, weeping like the Willow tree. When Father asked why she had left, she could not answer, it had been so long, she'd forgotten herself!

When Ground saw the planet, he was dazed. He saw how big it was, holding enough empty space- he could rule with no problem, having room for all his creatures to live in harmony- and he liked it.

Sea also took note of how much space it had, but not just sturdy surface, how much space was feeble with room to hid all his tricks and treats from everyone around him- and he liked it.

Sky smiled as he realized how much free room there was on the planet. He could run, jump, and play to his hearts content. He could float in the air and swim in the abyss- and he liked it.

All three brothers reached out to touch the planet. Ground picked it up only to have it quickly snatched away by Sea. Once Sea had it- Sky tried to take it and only resulted in having it slip from their grasp and crashing into the space below them, As the planet spun in its new location, large chucks of the sturdy surface fell into the darkness below, leaving only seven large pieces. Thus, because of their greed, Ground, Sea and Sky created the seven continents.

Mother and Father were angry at this, and scolded the brothers. But neither could come up with a good enough punishment for what they'd done. Then Mother decided that their punishment would be to take care of the planet they'd broken."I don't want to share!" Ground told them, "Sea isn't strong enough to take care of it and Sky is too childish!". "I do not wish to share either Mother." Sea said, "Ground isn't smart enough to rule a planet and sky doesn't understand responsibility."

"I don't think either of them should rule!" Sky exclaimed angry at his brothers' harsh words. Ground doesn't understand freedom and Sea is too harsh!" Mother was angry at her sons for speaking about their brothers the way they did. "You three do not understand harmony and peace, so because of your words you'll all be punished!" She cried. "Ground, Sea and Sky you will all rule the planet and you will learn harmony or be doomed to fail!"

So, all there brothers were sent down to the planet there they immediately split up. Ground liked to stay where he could walk sturdy and swift. Sea slipped into the darkness hiding beneath the sturdy surface. Sky rolled his eyes and jumped into the air, where he could be free. Mother and Father saw this and were pleased. They weren't fighting but they were together and that was fine. They entered the temple and left their sons to their own devices.

Ground decided he wanted more and he pulled the land up creating mountains and pushed it down creating craters and cliffs. He covered the surfaces with trees, plants, grasses and shrubs and he created animals to keep the plant life down and other animals to eat the other animals to keep that population down. Meanwhile Sea was doing the same. Covering the bottom of his abyss with plants nothing like grounds however. He created animals that could only live in water so they didn't leave and Ground got control of them. Sky enjoyed making his creatures. They moved like him, flying and floating but gave them legs so they could bother Ground, and let them float so they could annoy Sea.

But Sky was still very angry at ground and Sea so he took the clouds and didn't refill them with life causing Grounds grass to dry and Sea's water to dry. Sea didn't like this so he pushed water over the mountains and drenched the Ground's sturdy surface. Ground returning the favor opened his great lakes to the ocean. Thus we have droughts, monsoons and rivers. Sky realized he'd been beaten and ceased his actions, and instead released too much water on the planet. Thus creating Hurricanes.

Sea wanted to try his own mischief and he created waves to bend down upon Ground's sturdy beaches and Ground retaliated. He pulled land forms thus creating Islands. When Mother saw this she became angry again, they may have been creating harmony but they were going about it the wrong way. Father suggested that they create companions for their sons, and Mother set out to do so. Mother created three women in her image. The first she named Nature who was to help Ground control his creations and make many things grow. The second was a woman named Current who was assist Sea in watching over his abyss. Moving his creatures if they needed to be moved and help the creatures who couldn't help themselves. The final woman's name was Breeze. She was to play with Sky, letting him chase her and directing his clouds and birds.

When Ground, Sea and Sky met the beautiful women they were overjoyed and they felt their anger die and they immediately stopped fighting. So they had more time for Nature, Current and Breeze. But, once they had peace they were bored. They were no conflicts, nothing to do or worry about ,so together the three brothers made a new creature. Ground created it's body in their image with a sturdy surface. Sea gave them life of water. And Sea gave them a free spirit and an open mind. Thus they created man....
