Scilon wandered aimlessly until his double-vision cleared enough to make out a shimmering blue-green pond feeding into the lush growing shrubbery around the secluded area. He would have missed the pond entirely if it weren’t for a brief ripple that broke the water’s still surface and happened to seize the attention of his tired dark eyes.

It would be as good a place as any to die.

Scilon stumbled and scraped his pale skin with the brambles of a prickly bush burdened with full round berries, tiny rivulets adding to fatal stream pouring down his arm and off the ends of his trembling fingers.

Unbidden tears of frustration added to the outpouring of vital fluid from the ladybug’s weakened body as a stray vine tripped his bleeding bare feet and he landed hard on his side, the beckoning pool only paces away from his outstretched hand, yet it seemed the world was conspiring to keep him from his final resting place.

“No,” the boy gasped, finding strength in the refusal that had always brought him a bloodied lip or swollen cheekbone before.

His palms caught on the loose ebony hair that spilled like a death shroud around him, tearing out several strands as he struggled to his knees. Buzzing gnats tossed up floating particles of dust and battered at his wet face as he crawled laboriously forward, his glazing eyes unblinking though debris caught in his lashes.

He couldn’t tell how many places he was bleeding from now, even as he felt a newly scabbed wound break open and dampen the inside of his thighs. His vision swam again and refused to settle, and Scilon had to fight off a bout of retching that would have torn apart his insides since the reaction would be additionally fueled by his misery.

His hands and knees were scraped raw on wet, moss-covered rocks but he continued until he could move no more. Scilon fell forward heavily with his bleeding arm draped over the edge of the bank, the cool water kissing his fingertips clean.

The ladybug’s other arm was twisted uncomfortably beneath him, but he felt neither that minor discomfort nor the burning sting of his cuts any longer.

His head felt impossibly heavy but he made a last effort to turn it so he could look out into the idyllic pond, watching yellow drops of his blood hit the still surface and race outwards as the viscous fluid sunk.

“Mm…” Scilon breathed softly as a warmth began to thread its way throughout his body, enveloping him with a comfort he had never been able to find within his own extensive family.

Dying was easier than falling asleep, the ladybug mused through a velvety haze as the sight of the beautiful pond and its swirling ripples diminished and darkened even though he knew his eyes were still open. This sleep would be final and unplagued with nightmares that continued long after waking.

Scilon wondered briefly if he felt anything similar to this thick, sweetly cloying sensation while he was developing in his delicate egg as tiny larva, surrounded in blissful darkness among heavy clusters of related strangers that had never hurt him yet.

A few last tears trickled over Scilon’s pallid cheeks as he let go of his regret and the final threads binding him to life with a last, unheard sigh.
