Only Fools Fall In Love

A/N IMPORTANT****** I had to write this for a class and sort of like it. I have considered turning it into a full story of how all of this happened. But I need to know if its worth doing. So please tell me if your intersted... Thank you.

The breeze rustled and scattered the leaves upon the forest floor.

Quietly, Sophia pulled the cloak tighter around her body as a shiver ran down her spine.

Her eyes shifted looking up at the night sky. Judging by the moon's current position, it was close to midnight.

Her foot steps could not be heard as she moved quickly to reach her destination. Her heart was beating unsteadily from the placid night.

She had to make it there before day break. She didn’t want to think about what would happen if she failed.

She stopped and studied the river before her. She dipped a bare toe into the rapid current. She pulled back deeming it too cold to just go through it.

She spotted several rocks that stood above the moving water. Taking a few steps, she was in front of the first stone.

Sophia pursed her lips then sighed. She stepped onto the first rock, her naked feet gripped the stone testing how secure it was before she leapt onto the next one.

She made it a little more than half way before she ran into her first challenge. The next jump was a rather large one and she was tiring quickly.

‘Can’t stand on this rock forever,’ she pointed out in her head. ‘It’s now or never.’ She counted to three before she jumped.

She felt the wet stone touch the bottoms of her feet as she lost her footing and slipped.

Quickly she regained her balance.

With four more quick leaps, she made it to the opposite bank. She placed a delicate hand over her breast feeling the erratic beat of her heart.

‘That was too close,’ She thought as she made her way through the thick forest.

She came upon a small mortal town captured and under siege. “My love, you await me here. I will not fail you,” she whispered sadly.

Sophia’s head snapped to the side staring into the dark woods. She could hear someone approaching. She drew the wooden bow from her back and a single feathered arrow. Aiming, she waited for the source of the movement.

“You don’t plan to shoot me now, do you Sophia?” asked the teasing voice.

“Daniel! You shouldn’t be here.” She lowered her bow. “It’s dangerous enough without me having to worry over you.”

Daniel let out a light chuckle, “Now Sophia. Your father would have a fit if he knew his only daughter, sole heir to the throne, was out chasing after some silly mortal boy.”

Sophia pulled her bow back up angrily, aiming at Daniel's chest.

“You’d kill me for some stupid mortal? Some human scum who ran the moment he figure out you were an elf?!?”

“He ran because he was confused. He came back to me because our love is that strong.”

“Your love will fall short, Sophia.”

With a blink of an eye the arrow hit him in the chest just missing his heart. He just stared at her in shock.

“I’d do anything for him Daniel and I wont let anyone, including you, get in my way of saving him. Now get home so my father can heal you.”

She drew another arrow and aimed it at his heart when she saw he wasn’t going to go anywhere. “Please don’t make me do this. You know I’d hate to lose you.”

“Sophia, I can’t let you go. The king would. . .”

“He’s not just a king you know. He’s a father too and you rather die for his honor than allow me to fight for the one I love? I’m sorry. . .” She let the second arrow go and watched it pierce his heart. “Good bye, Daniel,” she whispered turning back towards her target. She tucked her bow away as she heard yelling. She disappeared inside a small house on the outskirts of the town.

She couldn’t believe she had just done that. A murder! Was it worth it? ‘ Of course it was. Anything is worth it for love,’ She thought as she pressed her back against the wall as she heard the voices get closer.

She closed her eyes and envisioned her lover standing before her. Overly large brown eyes on an elegant face. Soft pink lips that are always curved in a smile. Broad, strong shoulders with long muscled arms and callused hands from a days work. The picture perfect man that she was lucky enough to have.

She let a small but happy memory wash over her.. .

“Aidan!” she giggled. “Put me down.” She demanded as he spun her around. It was Christmas morning and the first snow had arrived.

“But I’m having so much fun, bright eyes.” He smiled setting her feet on the ground still keeping his arms around her.

“Bright eyes? Where did that come from?” She asked wiping snow from his hair.

“What? You don’t like it? It’s just that your eyes draw me in.”

Sophia blushed as Aidan kissed her nose. “No. It’s sweet. I love it.” She leaned up pressing a kiss to his lips.....

That was four months ago during their first Christmas together.

Sophia dropped to her knees when she heard the door to the small house burst open.

“They couldn’t have gone far. Search high and low. No one is to get in unless they are a prisoner... do you understand?”

She heard the murmur of understanding as they began to tear the small house apart. Sophia knew she was out numbered and she couldn’t escape. She couldn’t sneak in anymore. The town was now alert to an intruder. Standing slowly she surrendered herself. Before she could speak, two large men grabbed her arms and dragged her outside. She remained quiet as they dragged her through the familiar town. She knew it was dangerous, but what choice did she have?

The large men threw her into a small prison cell and slammed the door shut. “We will deal with you later.”

Quickly, Sophia set about unlocking the door with a bit of magic. Being unsuccessful, she let out a frustrated noise and sat down staring out into the dark hallway. What was she
doing? This was crazy. How was she suppose to save him when she had no idea where he was or if he was still alive? She brought her knees to her chest and laid her face in them, letting herself cry for her lost lover.

~***~***~***~

“Come on sweetie. Tell us your name. You’ve been in here two days, you must be hungry. Your name is all it takes for a plate of food.” One of the men was trying to coax her out
of the corner. She sat there with her head on her knees trying to ignore the human in front of her.

He put a hand on her shoulder and with quick reflexes she brushed him off. “Don’t touch me,” she growled.

“Ah so you do speak. And you a little feisty aren’t you,” he teased her bending down to eye level, grabbing her chin forcing her to meet his eyes. “You can rot in here for all I care, but lets make both our lives easier and you tell me your name and purpose here.”

She openly glared her distaste at him before spitting directly into his face. “Dirt bag.”

He picked her up by her cloak and threw her into the wall. “You stupid bitch. Fine, rot here. Why do I care. Aidan, come keep watch over her. I don’t trust her.” He slammed the door to the cell shut as he exited.

Her head lifted off the ground at Aidan’s name. She watched another figure enter the room. She gasped seeing his face and scrambled to the cell door. “You’re okay.”

The man looked up hearing her talk, slowly approaching the small, dark cell. “Sophia?” He said gently pressing his hand to one of the bars. The she stood in front of him. He couldn’t believe this.

“Aidan! I was so worried I was too late. When I heard they were killing off your people... I was so frightened I might already be too late.” She pressed her hand to his.

Aidan shook his head, “They spared me. I’m useful to them.”

“How?” Sophia asked feeling him brush her cheek with tentative fingers.

“I gave them information.”

“Information. What information could they possibly want?” she asked leaning into his soft caress.

He smiled sadly pressing a kiss to her forehead. She smiled at him.

“I’m sorry bright eyes.” He whispered as he plunged a dagger into her stomach.

She gasped in pain falling to the floor. She looked up to see him studying the bloody dagger. “I never thought it would be so easy to get you to trust me after I left. I never thought you would actually welcome me back. Do you know what the price for an elf is here? “ He asked watching her die slowly on the floor as she bled out.

“Aidan, you didn’t.” She gasped out harshly. “It’s- it’s not true.”

“I told them where your people live and when they are most vulnerable. I’m sure right now they are raiding the village, killing everyone that gets in their way as they make it toward their goal, the king.”

Aidan watched Sophia take her last breath before throwing the dagger beside her body. “Only fools fall in love, Sophia, and you learned the hard way.” He left her body there as he went to alert someone of her suicide only a single tear running down his cheek.
