Characters: Julian Thornton and Tyler Davis
1. First day… Again
It was his first day. Something Julian Thornton was used to by now. This was his fourth new school in the last five years. He was now a senior who was ready to get to college. He walked through the hall with the school’s map and his class schedule. The bell for first period rang. He was nowhere near where the map said his class was. Minutes later he found his classroom.
“You’re late,” the teacher, Mr. Bright, said tapping his ruler stick on the marker holder of the dry erase board. “Who are you?”
“Julian Thornton,” he replied. “I’m new here.”
“Oh okay,” Mr. Bright’s expression went softer. “Welcome to Twentieth Avenue. Please take the empty seat over there next to Tyler. Tyler! Wave your hand.”
A boy in the middle of the room waved his hand without even looking up.
Julian took his seat and set his backpack on the ground next to his feet. He scrunched the long sleeves of his blue, zip-up hoodie up to his elbows and pulled that, along with his white t-shirt down to cover the boxers his pants left showing. His brown belt held his khaki shorts up on his butt. He ran his hands through his short but thick brown hair before looking up to the board.
Mr. Bright began his lesson about exponential polynomials in the quadratic equation.
“Hey,” Julian said over to Tyler, the boy he was sitting next to.
Tyler looked up to him confused at why he was talking.
“What’s up?” Tyler said.
Tyler Davis was the school’s star pitcher and hitter on the baseball team. He was tall with short, dark, messy brown hair and blue eyes. He had a white band t-shirt on with a pair of blue jeans and black slip-ons.
“My name’s Julian,” Julian said extending his hand.
“Tyler,” Tyler replied shaking. “Where you from?”
“Everywhere,” Julian replied. “My dad’s in the army.”
“So now you’re here?” Tyler said even though it was obvious. “Well, this is a really great school. You’re lucky you get to finish out your senior year here.”
“I don’t know if I will finish the year here,” Julian said. “I just hope graduation comes soon so I can move into a dorm and not move schools anymore.”
“Oh yeah,” Tyler said. “I have a full ride baseball scholarship to Harmon State.”
“Nice,” Julian said.
“Hey,” Tyler said. “I really need to pay attention to this. I’ve got to keep my grades up to stay on the baseball team. Why don’t you find me in the commons later and we can get to know each other then.”
Julian smiled. He was so used to introducing himself to others, sometimes he forgot he had to learn at school. Sometimes, such as in this case, he had already learned what they were being taught. And other times, he would be really behind.
***
It was lunchtime. Julian was beginning to figure out the layout of the school. He found the commons and bought himself a sub for lunch. He looked around. The commons was a large room with lunch counters, a candy shop, and many round tables with chairs set around them.
Julian took his sub to a nearby table and sat down. He unwrapped it and began eating it.
“Hey,” Tyler said sitting down at the table with a taco.
“Oh hey,” Julian said. “How’s it going?”
“Great,” Tyler said. “So how do you like it here?”
“I’ve only been here a few days,” Julian said. “But I guess it’s not so bad.”
“Hey,” Tyler smiled. “You’ve already made a friend.”
“Yeah,” Julian said. “I usually make one and then I have to move. So sorry if I do.”
“That’s okay,” Tyler said. “We can keep in touch. Besides, maybe you’ll come to college here and we can stay friends.”
“We’ll have to see,” Julian said. “I haven’t picked where I’m going to go yet.”
The bell rang.
“Well,” Tyler said getting up. “I’ve got to head to P.E. But hey. I’m having a party this Friday night to kick off the baseball season. You think you’d wanna come? Meet some people?”
“Why not?” Julian said. “Where do you live?”
“I’ll find you on myspace and send you the event invite,” Tyler said. “See you later man.”
“Later,” Julian said. He got up and went to his next class.
***
“Son,” Lt. Thornton said as his son headed for the door. “Where are you going?”
“To a party,” Julian said walking into the living room. “My new friend Tyler invited me.”
“Alright,” Lt. Thornton stood up. “I trust you will be responsible at this party and make the right choices.”
“Sir yes Sir,” Julian said saluting.
“Dismissed,” his father said. “Be home by one please.”
“On the dot,” Julian said walking out the door.
He got into his car and drove to Tyler’s house. Cars were parked all around the block. Tyler was one of those rich kids with a large house and parents who buy everything. Julian parked his car down the street and went for the house. He opened the door, loud music was blaring and people were dancing. Most of the kids had drinks in their hands. Julian made his way into the backyard.
“Hey,” Tyler yelled. “Julian over here.”
Julian made his way over to Tyler, who was with a few of his friends.
“Guys,” Tyler said. “This is my new friend Julian. He’s new to Twentieth Ave.”
The group of about four all greeted Julian.
“I’ll introduce you all,” Tyler said pointing them out. “This is Gabe, Justin, Megan, and Katharine.”
“Nice to meet you guys,” Julian said.
They began talking like they were before Julian was there. Eventually Julian made his way inside to use the bathroom. He finished up and walked out of the bathroom.
“Hey,” Tyler said. “Having fun?”
“I guess,” Julian said. “Just a party where I don’t know anybody but whatever.”
“That’s okay,” Tyler said. “If it makes you feel any better, Katharine just dumped me.”
“Oh I’m sorry,” Julian said awkwardly. He wasn’t sure how to react to this.
“Sorry,” Tyler said. “I know this must be awkward for you being new. I like to share things that happen to me to any of my friends, even my new ones.”
“That’s cool,” Julian said.
“So,” Tyler said. “Do you want something to drink?”
Tyler held up a cup of beer.
“No,” Julian said. “Thanks though. I promised my dad that I wouldn’t drink. He’s pretty strict about that.”
“Next time then,” Tyler laughed. “You can stay the night and then your dad will never know.”
“Sure,” Julian said. “That’d be great.”
The song Girlfriend came over the speakers.
“Man,” Tyler said. “What a stupid song. But it’s so freakin’ good! I must dance to it!”
Tyler threw his arms up and began shaking his butt. To others it could have looked like he was trying to dance with Julian.
“Dude,” Julian stepped back from the splashes of beer coming out of Tyler’s cup. “What are you doing? People are going to think that you are trying to dance with me.”
“Everyone is dancing,” Tyler laughed. “No one cares who is dancing with or around who. Just loosen up and dance man. How are you going to have any fun otherwise?”
“I guess you’re right,” Julian sighed as he began slowly moving himself not to the tempo of the fast paced song.
***
It was about twelve-thirty when the party died down and most of the kids went home. Tyler was laying on the couch of his living room with his lower arm resting on his head. Julian was trying to clean some things up so Tyler wouldn’t have to do too much of it.
“Hey,” Julian yelled from the kitchen. “You okay in there?”
Tyler groaned as he got up off the couch and began picking empty plastic cups off of the tables and the floor.
“Thanks for helping,” he said as he sluggishly entered the kitchen. “You know you don’t have to.”
“I know,” Julian said. “But what are friends for right?”
Tyler stared at him.
“What?” Julian said, “Do I have something on my face? In my hair?”
Tyler shook his head. He moved towards Julian and ran his hand down the side of his face.
“I don’t know you that well,” Tyler said. “But I can tell that you are a really great guy.”
Julian kept his eyes on Tyler’s hand which was still on his face. Tyler leaned in and kissed Julian. Julian’s eyes shot wide open. He pushed Tyler back.
“What was that for?” He asked keeping his eyes on Tyler.
“I just felt like it was something I should do,” Tyler said. “Sorry if that grossed you out or anything. I should learn not to do that.”
“You do that a lot?” Julian said, “Even so. It’s okay. You’re drunk. I couldn’t take advantage of a drunk person.”
“But,” Tyler said. “You’d kiss me if I were sober?”
Julian gave a smirk.
“I have to go,” he said. “Don’t wanna miss my curfew. I’ll see you on Monday.”
Julian smiled at Tyler and left his house. He smiled to himself as he got into his car and drove home.
***
When he arrived at his house he parked in the driveway next to his father’s car. He got out and headed into the house. His father, who generally waited up for his son, was reading the newspaper in the living room.
“Hello Julian,” his father said.
“Sir,” Julian replied.
“On the dot,” his father said. “Good job. How was your party?”
Julian’s eyes rolled up as he thought back to the party. He flashed back to the drunken kiss Tyler had planted on him.
“Hello?” Lt. Thornton said, “You still there son?”
“Huh?” Julian came back to reality, “Oh sorry. What was your question?”
“How was your party?” His father said looking up from the paper.
“Oh,” Julian smiled. “It was good. I had a lot of fun.”
“Good,” his father smiled. “Now get to bed. I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Night dad,” Julian said as he headed up the stairs and into his bedroom.
He shut the door behind him and took his shirt off.
“Uhh,” he groaned as he fell back on his bed.
He pulled his shorts and socks off and curled up under the covers.
“What a night,” he whispered to himself.
He could hear his father walking down the hall to his room. Soon he drifted off to sleep.
***
Monday morning rolled around and Julian’s alarm went off. It was six in the morning. He hopped out of bed and headed for the bathroom across the hall to shower.
“Julian,” his father called a little later that morning. “Breakfast. Hurry up, you don’t want to be late.”
Julian ran down the stairs and headed into the kitchen. His father had cooked up some eggs and a protein shake for him.
“Morning Sir,” Julian said sitting down at the island in the middle of the kitchen.
“Good morning Julian,” his father said. “Eat up.”
Julian began eating his eggs. Every drink he took of his shake made him cringe. He never liked them.
“Did you get your homework done?” His father asked.
“Yes Sir,” Julian said eating. “I did it yesterday after church.”
“Good man,” his father smiled. “Now finish up and get to school.”
“Yes Sir,” Julian said as he continued eating his food.
He soon finished and headed back up to his room where he packed his backpack. When all of his stuff was ready for school he headed back downstairs.
“Later Sir,” Julian said heading out the door.
“Have a good day son,” Lt. Thornton said from the kitchen.
***
Julian was early to class as he had been everyday since his first day when he was late. He took out his math notes and began going over them.
As time passed students began filing in and taking their seats until the bell rang and everyone was there.
“Go over your homework,” Mr. Bright said. “The answers are on the board. If you got something wrong, ask the person next to you.”
“Hey,” Tyler said.
“Hey,” Julian said looking up and down from the board.
“Listen,” Tyler said. “Are you and I cool?”
“About what?” Julian said continuing his checking.
“Come on,” Tyler said. “About what happened after the party on Friday night.”
“Oh that,” Julian looked at Tyler. “Yeah. We’re cool. Are you cool about it?”
“Well,” Tyler said. “Yeah. I mean well…”
“You don’t have to explain yourself,” Julian smiled. “You were drunk right?”
“Yeah,” Tyler sighed. “But I mean. I wasn’t impaired. I knew what I was doing.”
“Do you really want to talk about this right now?” Julian asked, “I mean, wouldn’t it be easier if we were alone to talk about this?”
“I’m never alone at school,” Tyler said. “It comes with being the star pitcher. But… You can still spend the night at my house. We can be alone then.”
Julian let out a half cough laugh. “Okay,” he said. “When?”
“Friday night,” Tyler said. “My parents will be out as usual and my little sister will be at a babysitter’s house. So, we will have the house all to ourselves.”
“Okay,” Julian said. “I’ll run it by my father. But, he probably won’t care. So sure.”
“Awesome,” Tyler said.
“Okay class,” Mr. Bright interrupted. “I take it you are all done from the talking I can hear. So let’s get started. Please pass your homework up and take out your notes.”
