What It Is To Burn

Nik leaned over the ship’s railing and stared unseeing into the churning white foam of the sea. Without her even realizing it, she began crying silently.

“Oh mom and dad, how could you leave us?” she whispered.

Nik, whose full name was Anika, had just lost her parents. They were working late at night at their office of their independent law office when they caught in a fire. The fire department had blamed it on faulty wiring, but Nik didn’t believe it. Her father had been much too careful to let something like frayed wires slip his mind. It didn’t matter though. In their will they had stated that if anything was to happen to them, they wanted their children to live with a Mr. and Mrs. Delcour. The name was unknown to Nik and her older sister Rhian, but once again it didn’t matter. So now they were on a boat with all of their things on their way to some remote town in Canada.

“Hey Nik. Supper’s on. Why don’t you come get a bite to eat?” A soft voice called out to her from behind. Nik quickly wiped the tears from her face, and turned to face her older sister Rhian.

“No thanks, Rhi. I’m not having very much of an appetite right now.”

Rhian nodded her head in understanding. “Well it’s getting a bit dark. Are you sure you don’t-“

“Why did they have to go get themselves killed?” Nik yelled cutting her sister off and wrapping her hands so tight around the railing her knuckles were white. “If they would’ve been home like normal people instead of trying to work at that fucking office so late at night, we would still be a family and we wouldn’t be on our way to meet people who are too cheap to spring for fucking airplane tickets!”

Nik just stood there panting after her outburst. She was so caught up in her grief, she didn’t even notice that the railing she was gripping was slowly frosting over with ice.

The wind suddenly began to pick up, and caused Rhian’s brown hair to slap her in the face. Shivering, she pulled her thin blazer tighter around her body. It was odd, but suddenly the weather felt like winter even though it was late summer.

”I know Nik.” She said. “Come on. Let’s go in. it’s getting ferociously cold out here.”
Grabbing her younger sister’s hand, she went back below deck to warm up.
