Prologue

The fight had been going on for only a few minutes. But within those moments so much had happened that Miranda was frozen where she stood. Her heart was racing faster than she could handle. Sweat was dripping from her brows and no matter how much she wanted to move, her feet wouldn't take a step.

On the floor lay a young woman, her throat had been ripped out revealing the spine underneath. Her eyes were dead, glazed over. Standing above her was a man, whose arm was covered in blood from hand to elbow. A look of triumph shone brightly on his face. But underneath that, barely visible to her eyes was evil. It was so strong that it made her shudder.

Behind them were two groups of people. In the first were two men. One of them had the darkest eyes Miranda had ever seen. He was on top of the other man, trying to get a hold of his neck. His eyes flared angrily in the light. The man under him was holding onto his attackers hands, keeping them at bay for the moment. His teeth were snapping at the man on top of him. His teeth stood out, drenched in blood, and were longer than they should have been.

"No way. This cannot be happening." She whispered to herself.

"Randi! Get out!" a voice yelled at her, drawing her attention to the second group. The man who yelled at her was strikingly beautiful. Just looking at him caused her heart to miss a few beats. But that moment of watching him made her forget about the other person in the room.

Someone slammed into her, taking her to the floor. It was the man who had ripped out the womans throat. They rolled across the ground ending with him on top. He straddled her waist and wrapped his hands around her throat and began to squeeze. Miranda tried to pry his hands off her but his grip was iron. He leaned down so his mouth was by her ear, still squeezing down on her neck.

"I"m going to hurt him by killing you and then take his life. I thought I would tell you that I'm killing your lover before you died." Miranda slowly turned her eyes to the man she had seen seconds earlier. He was fighting with all he had against the other man. The look on his face was horrid, he wanted to get to her. It was plain to see on his face.

Miranda's vision was starting to fade. She couldn't breathe or think, the only thing she knew was that she was going to die. And she didn't want to. Not now. Randi slid her hands up the mans arms until she came to his face. Her eyes shut, she was close to passing out. With the last bit of strength she had, she thrust her thumbs deep into his eyes until she felt them pop and ooze began to drip down her hands. The shrill shrieks of the man helped bring her back to reality. He released her throat and grabbed at his eyes. He stood up sharply and began to run off but tripped over something Miranda couldn't see and collapsed to the ground. The man who had called her name ran to her and helped her sit up, cradling her in his arms.

"I'm so sorry, Randi. I never meant for you to get involved in this." he told her.

"It's alright. I'm still alive." she smiled weakly. He stood up and helped her to her feet. He slid an arm around her waist and started to lead her out of the room. They only took a few steps when he stopped and stood perfectly still.

"I thought I killed you." he said, still not turning around.

"I'm not that easy to kill. But you are." He finally spun around, bringing Randi with him.

Miranda cried out in pain, her knees giving under her. The man tightened his grip and lowered her to the floor, tears filling his eyes. Randi looked down at herself. She knew why she was in pain. An arrow was sticking out of her stomach. Blood soaked her clothes and was leaving a pool of it around her.

"Randi! Randi!" a familiar voice shouted. Two hands grabbed her around the waist and at her elbow. "Randi, snap out of it!" the voice yelled again, more frantically this time. Randi's body jerked in his hands. Her eyes flew open and she gasped loudly. She turned sharply so she was facing who was holding her. She knew this face, trust this person.

"Daniel," she gasped again. His hands moved around her waist and he pulled her against his body holding her tightly. Randi put her arms around him and clung to him.

"What did you see?" Daniel asked. When she didn't answer he pulled her away from him and shook her hard. "What did you see that almost made you throw yourself off this building. Randi, what was it?" Randi looked over her shoulder. They were standing on the top of her apartment building, by the very edge. She turned back to Daniel with wide eyes.

"My death."
