Bars and Blackness

This is my first posted work, Be kind.

Eva: Bars and Blackness

Eva saw him the moment he walked into the bar. Granted it was nearly one a.m., the bar was pretty much empty, and any new presence was easy to see; but still. She wasn’t even sure why she had looked up in the first place. It’s not like she had heard him come in the door. She had been deep in thought for awhile now; staring intently at the bottom of the empty glass in front of her. Eva had spent most of the night trying to rid herself of an impossibly large headache with the use of spiced rum; not that it was working any. But she looked up suddenly just as he stepped into view. He stayed near the door in the shadows for a minute or so while looked around the room; hat pulled down low over his face and hands shoved into the pockets of his jeans. She couldn’t make out much more of how he looked from this distance with all the smoke in the air, her pounding headache, and the large amount of rum in her system.

He slowly made his way across the room and around the bar to take a seat about six stools down from her. Her eyes followed him the entire time; she thought he hadn’t noticed her yet and if he did he made no acknowledgement of her existence. He was wearing a black sleeveless shirt that fit close enough to his body to indicate that he must work out on a regular basis, a pair of loose dark blue jeans with a studded leather belt, and some plain black sneakers. He was also wearing a black worn fedora that looked like it had seen better days and was pulled down enough to hide his eyes and cast the rest of his face in shadow. His hair was longer but it probably wouldn’t quite reach his shoulders. She couldn’t tell because it had been hastily pulled back in a pony tail at the base of his neck. His skin was a beautiful olive color and his shoulders and muscular arms were covered in tattoos.

He finally glanced in her direction but didn’t even make eye contact before ordering a shot of tequila from the bartender who had made his way to the counter from somewhere. The bartender poured the man a shot and walked down towards Eva. When he was standing almost in front of her she slid the empty glass in her hand across the counter, “I don’t think so,” the bartender said as he caught the glass, “you’ve had enough for one night.”

“Please?” Eva asked with about as much feeling as she could muster at this point. She was leaning heavily on the bar but she didn’t feel drunk at all. Eva had gone through a phase in her life where she drank copious amounts of alcohol almost nightly. She knew her limits and knew when she was ‘drunk’ and when to stop drinking. Lately, however, no matter how much she drank it didn’t seem to affect her at all. Her head just hurt so badly and she was very tired and knew full well she looked drunk.

“Nope.” He replied.

“God Joe, come on, one more? One more tiny shot and I’ll stop.” Eva started to beg, “please?” She wasn’t even slurring her words.

“Fine,” Joe said with a sigh, “but then I’m taking the glass away and calling you a cab.” He poured a shot of spiced rum and set it down in front of her. “You look like shit Eva, when was the last time you slept?”

“I don’t even fucking know.” Eva lied easily. She in fact slept all day long, every day. But it didn’t help. She had no idea what was wrong, but she felt at least ten times worse than she looked. Eva stared down at the drink in her hands as Joe walked into the back room. Moving the small glass up to her lips she paused for a second, hesitating and almost reconsidering, but instead she closed her eyes, let a small sigh escape her lips, and then quickly downed the contents of the glass in one swallow. She set the glass down on the bar again harder than she expect and opened her eyes. The man in the fedora was now occupying the seat directly to her right and looking at her intently. Eva jumped; startled by his sudden closeness and he caught her arm, steadying her before she fell off her bar stool. She looked up, ready to yell for scaring the shit out of her; that is until she looked directly into his eyes. His hand still held firmly onto her right arm but she no longer cared that he was so close or that he was still touching her. Those eyes were a beautiful deep green color; she could get lost in them and they were oddly familiar. Eva quickly scanned the rest of his face trying to place where she’d see him before.

A black goatee framed his mouth nicely along with stubble across the rest of his slightly squared jaw signaling that he probably hadn’t bothered to shave that day. His mouth wasn’t to thin and the left corner went up slightly in a half smile. His nose was a little crooked; it had obviously been broken at least once. His green eyes were framed in long eyelashes and were amazingly hard to look away from. Eva saw laughter in them as well; she had almost fallen off her stool after all. His eyebrows weren’t very thick but they were very expressive; he cocked one as he looked at her. The half smile was quickly gone from his face and the laughter from his eyes.

“You alright?” He asked, “I’m sorry I scared you.” His voice was deep, a little raspy, and incredibly sexy.

“I…I know you.” Eva said, more confused than ever.

“Yeah, I…” He sighed, stood up, and pulled his phone from his pocket. “Damn thing. Sorry I gotta take this. Just don’t go anywhere ok?” With one last look he walked away.

“Oh… Ok.” Eva watched him walk towards the front door and then outside to answer his phone. She turned back to the bar and rested her head in her hands. Praying that the headache would go away soon. It was a few minutes before she got another distraction.

“So, can I buy you a drink?” Eva looked up and standing on her left was a tall man she’d never seen before; and she really wasn’t in the mood to be hit on.

“I’m done for the night.” Eva answered and moved to lay her head back in her hands but he wasn’t going to give up quite yet.

“Hey, one drink, maybe a phone number?” He stepped up a bit closer to her and was making her very uncomfortable. If he touched her she was going to scream. But before she could answer mystery man reappeared at the bar.

“Sorry ‘bout that babe, lets go home.” He put one hand on the small of her back and helped her stand up with the other. He led her away from the bar and cast a look back at the man left standing there. She leaned into him and he wrapped his arm the rest of the way around her waist.

“You have wonderful timing.” Eva said once they were almost to the door.

“You have no idea.” He whispered but Eva didn’t hear him. His grip tightened as she stumbled, “drink a bit too much tonight?” He said more loudly this time.

“Not nearly enough to make my fucking headache go away.” She was just so tired. “Where are we going?” It was also getting very hard to walk she was very thankful to have someone to hold her up and make sure she didn’t fall on her ass.

“My apartment is just around the corner.” At least it was a beautiful night out; nice and cool, full moon, and no clouds in the sky. You’d even be able to see stars if it wasn’t for all the city lights. They came to the end of the block, crossed the street and turned left. A little ways down the street he stopped in front of a red brick, five-storey building and dug some keys out of his pocket. He took her hand and helped her up the three cracked steps and unlocked the front door.

Once inside he locked the door behind him and walked straight down the hallway past the staircase and some other doors. They stopped in front of a door with a brass number seven that had lost a screw and was now hanging upside down. Eva walked into the apartment ahead of him and looked around as he closed the door and bolted the lock. Eva was only able to take a few more steps before started to feel dizzy. She reached out for the counter off to her right to steady herself but it was farther than she thought and her hand fell about a foot short. Everything went black and she felt herself fall.

The street was deserted as Eva walked home from work. A man turned the corner and walked in her direction. She tried to ignore him but put a tighter grasp on her purse and held it closer to her body. Her eyes focused on the sidewalk as she continued down the street. As the man passed her he grabbed her arm and pulled her into an alleyway. Everything happened so fast and with the darkness of the alley and how she was being jerked around she lost a sense of where she was. The voices weren’t making any sense she wasn’t even sure how many people were around her. Finally she was holding still but there was a strong arm around her chest and something cold was pressed against her throat. Eva heard shouting and the voices became more frantic. A sharp pain shot through her neck and she felt herself fall and immediately hit the ground. Eva could swear she could hear someone saying her name and she forced her eyes open; all she could see was a pair of dark eyes--maybe green, but almost black--reflecting the light from the street. Eva tried to speak but nothing came out and the eyes vanished. Her throat was throbbing in pain yet she felt another sharp stab shoot up her neck and down her shoulder. Everything faded to black and all sound stopped.
