Doll's Ramblings

I looked up the definition of doll once. I was in a bookstore. Not sure why I was there.... I think I went to warm up a bit or to use the bathroom. I saw a blue dictionary and looked though it until I found the word doll. I still remember exactly what it said....

"A small scale figure of a human being used especially as a child's plaything."

I started laughing at the irony and then crying for the same reason. I just stood there holding the book, blackened tears running down my cheeks and this weird humorless laugh coming from my mouth. The cashier lady came over and said something about being quiet and scaring other people. I just laughed harder and held the book towards her saying, "Look at it! Look what it says about me! Look at it!" But she just didn't understand... It was perfect. Those words were me and my whole life summed up in one small incomplete sentence.

The manager was the next to come out and he took me by my arm and led me back outside. I held the book out to him as well, pointing at the word and saying the same thing. "Look at what it says! Look!" He'd glanced around nervously. People must have been starting to stop and stare because he told me I could keep the damn book as long as I left and didn't come back.

I still have the dictionary. I read it quite often. I like words.
