Tomboy

As she buckled her chaps one of her older brothers walked up to her. She made sure she had a dry pair of clothes on a waiting horse.
"Adam will have you hide if you try to break that horse."
She stood up and walked out to the coral, "I can do it."
"Every one of the damn hands have tried. What the hell makes you think you can do it?"
She climbed onto the fence by the blinded horse. "Because." she got on the horse and took its blindfold off.
The horse bucked and spinned.

Brian heard feet running towards the coral.
"What the hell are you doing letting her ride that horse?" Yelled a man beside him.
"Because Adam, thats why."
Adam turned to the man he was showing around. "I guess you can see the best trainer in the whole country break your horse."
"I thought you were the best trainer."
"No, my little imp of a sibling is."
"So why the hell did you have me ride out here for? You've got another week of keeping riders on him"
Adam smiled, "See thats were your wrong my friend. It only takes once."
"Liar."
"I'll bet ya."
"How much?"
"You work with my trainer on how to break side saddle for a day or two."
"And if I win?"
"I'll feed ya dinner and I'll break you next horse for free."
"Deal."
As soon as the men shook hands Ashton saw the horse break to the will of the rider and walk around to coral.
"Holy shit."
Just then the rider saw her brother. Adam jumped the fence and started towards her.
"Nickole Marie Sinclair, you are in a heap of trouble."
Ashton looked at Adam then the rider. A girl?
"Only if you catch me Adam." She jumped off the horse then ran to the fence and jumped the fence. She paused to stick out her tongue before sprinting to the barn.
Adam turned to Brian, "Get our saddle bags and rope. We got some lassoing to do." then walked to Ashton. "Wanna go for a ride?"
"Where to?"
At that moment Nickole went galloping by on her horse.
"Where she goes."

Nickole looked behind her and gulped. Her brothers were behind her and catching up. She turned towards the watering hole.
Ashton was gaining on her and fast. He was about a foot away when he jumped on her horse behind her and grabbed her, and her reins.
Adam came up beside him. "Follow the trail. My sister needs a dunking."
"No!" Nickole screamed as she tried to escape Ashton's arm's. She kept screaming till she was thrown into the water.

"If I ever catch you riding another horse like that I swear to all thats holy that I will beat you." Adam threatened.
Nickole walked out of the water, "You say that every time till you get the money. Then you forgive me."
Ashton started to laugh, "My friend I think I found the female version of you."
He got hit with a pine cone, "I have better manners thank you very much." Nickole said as she grabbed her saddle bag and headed for a group of trees.
Ashton looked down at Adam, "So where is the rest of your family?"
"Clay is out on his ranch with his new wife, and I believe that David is out on the west coast working for the government."
"And Eric?"
"He's out with his wife." answered a still dripping wet blond from behind him. She walked over to her elder brothers and grabbed them by the ears. "You two need a bath." To Ashton's amusement, she led them into the water hole and dunked them. As her brothers sputtered for air, she calmly went into the woods to change. Ashton fell over laughing as his best friends since childhood stepped onto dry land.
"Damn it. Hailie is going to tan our hides." Adam stated as Nickole stepped out from the forest in dry clothes.
"You deserve it." She nodded to Ashton and jumped on her horse with her saddle bags on her shoulder.

That night around the coral Ashton let his curiosity free on Adam.
"I didn't know you had a sister."
"We didn't know till she came from the east after our mother died."
"How old was she? The talent she has is amazing."
"She was twelve." Adam looked far off, as if he could see the past. "She was a natural. I found her sleeping in the coral after her first week here. Our mother didn't let her near horses because it was un-lady like. But damn. She was a natural. We had this wild horse that was having problems foaling; she was the only one that could get close enough to help. After that, dad put in an apartment for her in the barn." He shrugged. "So when are you going to teach my sister to ride side saddle?"
"Why would she want to know how to do that?"
"So she can train horses." Adam led him towards the barn. "She wants to be the best in all aspects."
"Sounds good."
"ADAM!" Nickole screamed, "I NEED HELP! WE'RE GONNA LOSE SUZIE!" Adam broke into a dead run, with Ashton on his heals.

Nickole was sitting with a mare. With tears on her face.
"Fix her Adam. I swear on all that is holy shes at least three weeks early."
Ashton had never seen anyone that as much compassion as she did. She calmed the mare through out the foaling, and helped the tired mare clean her new colt.

"There you go girl. You were amazing. That's right, take care of your new baby." she crooned. She stood and hugged her brother. "Thank you so much."
"You're welcome. Now get some sleep. And no sleeping in the stalls tonight. It's spossed to freeze tonight." She nodded and went up the stairs to her apartment.

Ashton stood silent. Adam smiled at him.
"Whats the matter? You surprised?"
"A little. Last time my sister freaked like that, she had lost her favorite needle."
"Did she find it?"
"No, I did. With my ass." Adam chuckled and led Ashton to the house. "Do you think she'll stay in her rooms?"
"Naw, she'll be sneaking down tonight. I just gotta remember to put a blanket on her."

Nickole woke to the aroma of coffee.
"Mmmm.... Coffee."
"I thought you were supposed to stay in your rooms. I highly doubt that stall is your room."
Nickole stood and stretched. "You take care of a horse since it was two days old and see how you react when its in trouble."
Ashton handed her a cup of Coffee. "I'll try it when the next foal comes."
"Don't you have any coming?"
"No. I have three horses. You broke my stud."
"You're just starting a ranch?" They started to walk around the stable periodically stopping so she could pet a horse.
"Yes and no. I'm just starting. It used to be Old Riely's ranch."
"Wow. You got your work cut out for you."
"Yes I do. Right know I'm looking for a trainer. You know anyone?"
"I might be interested. I think my brother wants to settle down, but is waiting for me to get taken care of."
They stopped at the bottom of the stairs going to her rooms. "I'll make you a deal. I'll come to work for you if I can take about four, maybe five horses."
"I don't have the money to buy those from your brother."
"You don't have to. They're mine."


"You're going to what?!?" Adam yelled at Nickole in the midde of the pasture.
"To work for Ashton. He's building his stables and he's making a set of rooms for me. Come on Adam. It's time I start making money for the family. I can come back two days a week and do what ever you need done."
"Nickole, people are gonna talk."
"Like they haven't before?"
"But you were protected here."
"Oh yeah, like that time with those two stable hands? Yeah you guys did a real good job picking up their unconscious bodies when I was done kicking their asses."
"Watch your mouth."
"Practice what you preach."
