The Ending of our Love
You and I, babe,
Quite a pair we are
Who would have ever thought
That things would be this hard
You were the answer to a prayer
I thought
But the devil's hand you were
Who would have ever thought
Our love would be cause for us to err
When I came home today
You had fallen asleep next to your gun
And when I asked you what it was for
You said, "I was just cleaning it, hon"
Who would have ever thought
That I would worry about you doing me in
After a couple of sleeping pills
And an empty bottle of gin
But can I honestly deny
That I haven't thought the same
Who would have ever thought
We'd end up playing this sick game
She loves him not
He loves her so
The girl should just be smart
And pack up her bags and go
Who would have ever thought
I wouldn't have, so I don't know
There is no killer in me, babe,
So it has to be all on you
And I'll just sit here and wait
Trying to figure out
What you are going to do
Who would have ever thought
That life would be this hard?
Who would have ever thought
That things would go this far?
Off the path of righteousness we have strayed
And fallen into the devil's caress
Who would have thought a thing so sweet
Could have such a poisoned edge
How long can we hold out, my love,
Until we tumble off that ledge?
