Ice
They shifted, jostling each other and twisting blankets until they finally settled. Her body fit along his, her head resting against his shoulder.
The peace held for a few minutes. "I don't particularly like you." She said.
He puffed a breath of laughter.
"That's funny?" She asked.
"You're spooning me."
"You're warm." He seemed undisturbed by her answer. "Animals fear fire. Humans are smarter. We know the fire can hurt us, can kill us. But we know when we must huddle close to save ourselves from the cold." Especially the cold from within.
"So I'm fire." He sounded pleased, and amused. Familiar tone. Called to mind remembrance of Ty on his knees, a trophy warrior flexing muscles hefting the blade, herself flexing morals, and the betrayed worship in Ty's eyes as he died. She'd needed the messenger on the road before noon the next day. Less one pretty pet, she'd gotten her messenger. "So, this makes you...?"
"Ice." Ty's eyes. Ice blue.
"Definitely." She heard the smile in his voice and the softness of someone close to sleep. "I'll melt you." He murmured.
Fires go out, she thought, with rain, without fuel, lost momentum. Not like the endless cold, the blinding, blowing snow, and the glittering glass expanse of northern ice.
