Telepathy (The Ties That Bind)

Allison Bennett felt the warm breeze hitting her face, blowing her dark blond ponytail like a streamer behind her, and briefly closed her green eyes in satisfaction. Rufus, her Jack Russell terrier, marched proudly along besider her as she jogged her usual route. She chose early morning jogs for the peace it brought her; today, however, her thoughts were on her upcoming film role as an action star. The part would be physically demanding on the 26 year old, as she wanted to do most of her own stunt work, but she was keyed up in anticipation. The role was against type for her; she was taking a risk and determined to make it pay off.

Allison felt a tug on the leash and paused, glancing down at Rufus. He had stopped dead in his tracks, teeth bared and growling menacingly.

"What is it, boy?" She glanced around the park, trying to locate what had set Rufus off like that. He was normally a very sweet tempered dog, unlikely to growl at as much as a flea. She spotted a man jogging toward her dressed in black sweats and a black wool ski mask. It took her a few moments to realize the oddness of this sight...it was July. Her muscles tensed with adrenaline, ready to run at the first sign of danger. There was no use calling for help, the park was deserted at six in the morning.

Rufus had let loose a torrent of wild, yipping barks, punctuated by low growls. Allison was struggling against the leash, pulling Rufus in the opposite direction to no avail. "Rufus! Come!" she cried, but Rufus was only interested in protecting his mistress from the oncoming threat. The stranger was within twenty feet of her now, and looming closer. Allison tugged forcefully on the leash and Rufus slid back a few feet with a yelp. She looked around frantically for someone or something to help her. She saw a phone booth about thirty feet away. Dropping Rufus's leash, she sprinted toward the booth, the man soon running after her in hot pursuit. Allison dared not glance behind, but instead zeroed in on the phone booth looming closer with every step. Rufus launched himself at the stranger the second he was loose, and was promptly kicked into the trunk of a nearby palm tree. With a yelp of pain, he slid down the trunk and landed in an unconscious heap.

"Rufus!" Allison moaned. Her footsteps faltered; she tripped over her own two feet and sprawled face-down on the ground. Scrambling to get up, she felt the wind knocked out of her as a body leapt on top of her, bowling her over onto her stomach again. The last thing she knew before darkness was a damp rag pressing against her mouth and nose.
