I Don't Love You

In an empty room, on a lonely bed, Matthew lay. He counted the ceiling tiles as he thought of her. He thought of all he wished he had said, all he wished he had done. He loved her so much, or at least he thought he did. What in the world could he have done to her? Why did everything seem to come against him in life?

Grasping his burgundy pillow he turned over on his other side. So many thoughts were flowing in and out of his head. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe she was just busy. Maybe she was hurt... Oh he wouldn’t be able to take it if she were hurt. He turned over on his other side not able to get comfortable. It had been like this for a while now, not being able to sleep or eat. He pulled his black comforter up to his chin and closed his eyes tightly wanting nothing more then to stop thinking and fall off into a dreamless slumber, but it had been two weeks since he had last seen her face, heard her voice, and touched her. Where was she??

“Matt! Get up! God, man your gonna be late for work again!” a deep voice called from outside the locked door. “Matt this is the last time I’m gonna wake you up… you’re gonna get fired… I’m not paying your part of the rent!”

“I’m up,” Matt’s voice cracked as he slowly sat up in his bed, his eyes squinting from the unforgiving light. He looked over at the clock on the messy bedside table, 1:00pm.

“Ugh,” Matt said as he pulled himself up.
Matt made his way through the chaos that was his room to the bathroom on his left. Matt was 160lbs and around 6 feet tall. He had shaggy brown hair that just barely touched his shoulders. He was the typical rocker boy. But within those two never ending weeks he had become very haggard, wearied, and just worn down. His once bright blue eyes had grown murky and they held dark circles under them as signs of his restless sleeps. He looked as though he had been carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

He splashed water on his face and brushed his teeth. Then he put on his white uniform. Matt worked second shift in a factory. He didn’t mind it much. The work wasn’t too awfully hard for him, and he made pretty good money for what he did.

He looked into his dirty mirror and sighed. He didn’t want to go. He didn’t want to do anything but lie in bed, sleep, and wait by the phone for her. But he knew he wouldn’t sleep any, and to some extent he knew she wouldn’t call. He had a bad feeling, but he pushed it aside and walked out of his room.

He turned around and locked the door before walking to his left down a hallway. The hallway lead into an open space. The left of that space was a somewhat dirty kitchen and dining area. Then to Matt’s right was the living room, in which there was a dirty blond man who was about 6 foot 2 inches. He was a muscular man, and wore square glasses. He was sitting on the couch in the same uniform as him.

“You’re finally ready?” the blond man asked Matt.

“Yea Jer. I am. Come on we don’t want to be late now do we?” Matt said sarcastically as he walked to the door. Jeremy gave Matt a fake overemphasized laugh while trailing behind. Jeremy locked the apartment door behind himself.

The two men walked down the drab hallway out into the busy city street. The day was warm but not too hot. They turned to their right and headed for a packed parking lot. Matt stopped by a black Escort. It wasn’t in the best shape, but it got him to work and where he needed to go. Unlocking the doors they both got into the car and started it up. He pushed his turn signal down getting ready to make a left hand turn out into the intersection.

“Hey Matt can you stop by the gas station real quick? I need to get my 20 changed and something to drink,” Jeremy asked Matt. Matt looked at him with a grimace and turned his turn signal to the left instead. They made their way down the street periodically stopping for a red light until the station came into view.

Matt looked and then did a double take. His eyes started to widen and mouth dropped open. Was that who he thought it was? He sped up a bit. Jeremy saw the look on Matt’s face and then looked at the station. He saw a blond haired woman who was about 5 foot 4 inches. She was about average weight, wearing jeans, and a blue t-shirt. He knew it was Maria.

Pulling up at the gas station he jumped out of his car almost forgetting to put it into park. Wrapping his arms around her he cried out, “Maria, oh my God, where have you been? I have been so worried about you! I missed you so much! What happened? Why didn’t you return my calls, my e-mails? Were you hurt? Am I hurting you? I love you so much! Don’t ever scare me again!” he rambled on and on. All the while Maria was trying to get him to calm down.

“Matthew calm down. Matt put me down. Matt shhh. Matt!! Stop!!!” she finally yelled at him. He stopped and backed up a bit both hands holding onto her arms.

“I have missed you so much,” he said looking into her eyes his glossing over a bit. “Where have you been, why didn’t you call?” he asked again now in a calmer tone.

“Matt,” Maria said taking his hands off her arms and holding them. She looked down at the ground.

“Matt I have something to tell you,” she said looking up at him with a worried look on her face. “What is it baby? We can make it through anything. I will help you… be there every step of the way. I love you,” Matt said.

Then a man about 6 feet tall with short black hair and blue eyes walked out of the station and over to them, “May I help you?” he asked Matt. Maria looked at Matt and then the man.

“Matt I have to tell you something,” Maria said pulling her hands away from Matt’s and moved into the other mans arms.

“What’s going on Maria?” Matt said in disbelief. He knew what was happening. He knew his darkest fear was happening right here at the gas station in front of everyone. How dare she do this to him? How dare she not tell him! She didn’t even have the guts to come to him and say “I don’t love you like I did yesterday.”
