1. Introductions

Brian was late, and he knew it. He’d meant to meet with the other guys 15 minutes ago, but he still had some last minute errands to run before he would be free for the day, so upon calling and informing a disgruntled and sore-throated Mike, was running to the chemist to buy some throat lozenges that would hopefully placate his cousin’s irritation at his tardiness. He strode inside quickly, eyeing the choices carefully before choosing one. He tossed it onto the counter and waited impatiently to be served. He glanced at his watch, and groaned inwardly; he was now bordering on 20 minutes late. [Mike’s gonna kill me,] he thought desperately, eyes searching for someone who could ring up his purchase. Finally, someone appeared, Brian looked up from his wallet, where he was fumbling for the right change, and promptly forgot what he was there for. She wasn’t beautiful in the conventional sense, but the sparkle in her eye as she smiled apologetically caught him by surprise.
“Sorry about the wait. We’re a bit short-staffed at the moment.” He managed a smile.
“That’s okay.” Regardless of how late he was, he wasn’t about to be impolite.
“Here you are.” She handed him the throat lozenges.
“Thanks.” She looked at him expectantly when he made no move to take them from her. “Oh! Here.” Feeling extremely foolish, he handed her the money, then remembered he was late, and raced out. He was a good block down the road, before realising that he had forgotten to take the box as he left. With a sigh, he turned and walked back the way he had come, resigning himself to the fact that Kevin would be pissed regardless of any peace offering. With that thought in mind, he re-entered the chemist to see her looking at him, amusement alight on her face. She held the box out to him with a smile,
“Don’t worry, people do that every day.” He smiled sheepishly at her, before extending a hand.
“Brian, super-late.”
“Jess, super-bored.” They shook hands, and he grinned, lost in the moment, when the shrill sound of his cell ringing startled him. In his flurry to find his phone, he knocked over a bottle of cough syrup that had been on the counter, and to his dismay, watched it topple to the ground, whereby it smashed and quickly seeped into the carpet.
“I am so sorry!” Brian ignored his phone as he and Jess tried to soak up the mess before it stained the carpet. Brian glanced at his watch just as she looked up.
“Look, it’s okay, aren’t you running late?” She took the syrup-drenched towel from him.
“Yeah, but – “ He was cut off by the sound of his phone ringing again. He glanced at the caller ID – Jay.
“Yeah?” He answered.
“Yo, B! You’d better get your ass here, NOW, before Mike kills someone!” Jay hollered down the line. Brian winced.
“Yeah, be there in the few.” He hung up, and looked at her apologetically, “look –”
“It’s okay. Sound’s like you’re really late.”
“Um. Yeah. Um. I’m really really sorry about this. Um. Here; give me your number, and I’ll call you about the cleaning costs for the carpet.” Jess put up a hand.
“It really isn’t necessary.”
“Please – it’s the least I can do.” She sighed.
“Sure.” She wrote her number down on a strip of paper. He quickly shoved it into his pocket, along with his phone and the throat lozenges, and with yet another quick ‘sorry’, quickly left.
