Chapter Twenty-Four

Chapter Twenty-Four

Rowan yawned stretching after they finished the last song. “So, are we done yet?” she asked.

“You’re the one who demanded that we get together so early,” Cherish reminded casting a glare at her friend.

Rowan winced at that. She had called the others early and moved the rehearsal up. “I know, and I’m kicking myself, trust me.” None of the miscellaneous group were morning people, and yet there they were. When Rowan told them that she needed her night free everyone showed up. Sometimes, she mused, they could be surprisingly thoughtful.

“So, what are you doing tonight that’s so important that it makes you wake us up at eight in the morning, on a weekend no less,” Nick shook his finger at her at that last statement.

“Garret said he wants to spend the day with me,” she confessed blushing a little at the knowing looks her friends were sending her. They were pretty much the closest to a family that she had ever had since her sister had been taken away and her grandparents had died. There were times though, that they could drive her insane, like a family could.

“Awwe!” Kalena exclaimed clasping her hands together. “The vampires are going on a date!”

“Rae?” Nova asked in an overly innocent tone, everyone knew right away that that was a very bad sign.

Rowan turned to her. “Yeah?” She tossed her a small foil package. “What-?” She looked down, her mouth dropped open and she could feel her cheeks burning. She glared at Nova. “We won’t be needing this.”

“Oh, is it the wrong size?” she asked reaching into her purse. “I have small and magnum sized too.”

“Nova!”

“Which do you need?” She was smirking and by this point the entire room was laughing.

“I don’t know,” she all but growled at her.

“You don’t?” she asked, with a wide grin she handed her two more packages. “Here you go, just in case.”

Rowan tried to hand them back to her, but Nova wouldn’t take it. She sighed, shaking her head. “Nova, we’re going out on a date, we’re not going to a cheap motel or something. It’s just a date.”

“Yes, but you never know.”

Rowan tossed the condoms back at her friend. “Vampires can’t have babies until we’re a hundred anyhow.”

“You know that his roommate is going home for the weekend, right?” Kalena asked.

“How do you know this?” Rowan asked cocking her head to one side curiously, happy for even a slight change of conversation.

Kalena rolled her eyes. “I saw him leaving.”

“Oh. Well, I guess that would make since.” She took a deep breath as the group still stared at her expectantly. “Hey, you guys know me, it’s not like I’m going to put out on the first date or something.”

“Technically isn’t this the forth?” Cherish inquired.

“True,” she allowed. “But not the point.” she paused and sighed a little. “I miss Lupe. She, at least, never made fun of my love life.”

“Honey, you don’t have a love life,” Cherish pointed out. “Which, incidentally, is why we make fun of it.”

“That’s not the point,” she pouted. “And that’s not nice.”

“Think about that, Row,” Maya laughed. “When have any of them ever been nice?”

“Never,” Polaris answered for her.

“To answer your question, yes,” Cat said.

Rowan cocked her head again, confused, before realizing that she was talking about the question that she had asked much earlier. “Good,” she said. “I need to get away from you people.”

“You know you love us,” Maya said still laughing.

“I know no such thing,” she sniffed delicately, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. “All of you are mean, and intrusive.”

“Ooh, big word,” Polaris said.

“C’mon, lady vamp, you know you’re just giving them more bait,” Nick pointed out.

“I’ll walk back with you,” Nova offered. “I needed to pick something up in town and her car is parked in front of their building.”

“Bye guys!” she called walking out.

Nova caught up a few seconds later. She stared at her friend for a second before speaking. “You’re not mad, are you?”

“Mad? No. Embarrassed? Very.”

“I’ll admit; I’m a little confused.”

“Why?”

“Well, I’ve seen you two together. He loves you, that’s pretty obvious. I can see how much you care about him when I see you look at him. So why haven’t you two had sex?”

Rowan blushed; leave it to Nova to not mince words. “I don’t know. At first I guess I was scared he might be using me, that I was a challenge, ‘bed the virgin’. Now... I’m just scared.”

Kalena chose that moment to catch up to them. “Ah-ha, and we’re finally at the truth.”

“Truth?” she asked.

“Yes,” Kalena nodded, “you’re scared. You’re afraid of letting him close enough to love you.”

Rowan rolled her eyes. “Thanks, Dr. Laura, but I can manage without the head shrinking.”

“Personally, I’m amazed,” Kalena said. “He’s being much more understanding than most guys your age.”

“Exactly how old are you anyways, Kalena?” it was desperately time for a subject change.

“I’m nineteen,” Kalena announced. “And you are changing the subject yet again.”

“I was hoping you wouldn’t notice.”

“Well, I did. Why won’t you talk to us about that?”

“Since when do you even care?” she asked.

She shrugged. “I figure that if I’m stuck with you guys that I might as well try to get a long with you.”

“Oh, look I’m here. Guess we’ll have to continue this conversation later. Or not, whatever’s good for you guys.”

Rowan left the two and walked upstairs. Garret’s door was unlocked so she walked in and sat down on his bed. Garret emerged from the shower, still wet, wearing only a towel.
