The Secret
I can’t breath.
Thick air fills my lungs-
coats my insides:
slick, icy
intestines twisting
heart pounding
against the hallow of my throat.
Blood thumps in my ears.
Cheeks.
Between my legs.
We are rigid.
One move
and the floodlights will
Expose us.
Expose this.
Our moment.
Inside they are laughing-
enjoying his wife’s
hors‘douvres.
Pouring drinks.
While he pushes himself closer…
He tastes of
Lemons
dipped in
Vodka.
Lights -inevitably-
illuminate the driveway.
Catch a shock of gray hair.
The harmless patch
that first ignited
this attraction.
If my knees hadn’t given way,
if I hadn’t fallen back
against the car,
I would have reached out to
That silver spot.
Would have touched him
just once.
Caressed
the crinkles around
his dim, veiled eyes.
