In The Night

She awoke with a start. The room was silent. She didn't know what had

awoken her, but something inside her warned of danger. She sat up and and looked about.

something was amiss. Everything in her small room looked as it always had. Nothing but

a simple dresser in the corner, her bed, and a nightstand. She walked to the window and

looked out to the stable. From her room she could hear the horses. something was

spooking them. She lit a candle and walked to the children's room. It was a small house,

and her son and daughter had to share a room. Still asleep... maybe she was only

imagining it. As she started to return to her room, she heard a horse whine. Maybe there

was just some animal mulling about outside the stable. It could be nothing more than

that. Still, the stories shed been hearing worried her. What could it hurt to check.

She walked to the door, put on her fur cloak, and stepped outside. Cold. The air was

unnaturally cold for this time of summer. The horses whined again. something was wrong.

She hurried across the yard to the stable, her eyes darting to every sound she heard.

There was no animal as far as she could tell, yet all the horses were restless. It had to

be something... something. A loud, long cry pierced the night. She turned... it was her

daughters cry. She dropped the candle and ran. Every yell from her children made her run

even faster as she ran to the house. There was light coming from inside the house. Why

was there light. She ran into the house and to her children's room... and she screamed.

It was in that moment that she knew what it was that had awoken her, what had chilled the

night and spooked the horses. Something had visited their home that night. Death, had

visited them that night.
