Holidays

It was Christmas eve, the sun had set and John was walking home thinking of how great it would be to sit in front of the fireplace and warm himself, after all it was -10 degrees outside. He turned the corner, he was almost there when he saw a young woman standing in the street shivering. She was wearing a pair of jeans that were tucked into her boots, a woolen coat and a pink hat. He couldn't really see her face since she was facing the other way, but as he got closer she turned around and his face lit up when he realised who she was.
"Grace?" he called.
She squinted her eyes a bit and then gave him a slight smile, "Oh, hey John."
"What are you doing here? I thought you moved somewhere," John said smiling brightly.
Grace hezitated for a moment, "Well, um... just waiting."
"For who?"
"For the bus," she was looking down.
"Are you going somewhere on Christmas eve? Where are your folks?" John asked.
"I'm just going..um.. somewhere, anywhere is better than here," she answered while looking up at him.
John stood there quiet for a while, mesmerized by her brown eyes, "but i thought you still had another year or so before you graduate from college."
"Yeah, I know...but I," Grace didn't wan't to talk to him about anything. She remembered him well- JOHN- all the girls in high school would follow him around and he was always arogant and smug, but for some reason he was always good to Grace- defending her when people were talking behind her back. She was gratetul that he did all those things for her, but she wanted to keep a distance from him and they rarely talked to each other about anything, unless they had to work on an assignment together.
"Grace," she heared him say and looked at him questingly, "what are you doing for Christmas?"
"I told you I'm waiting fot the bus," she began, but standing there in the cold she suddenly found it amusing and began to laugh, "*hahaa* and its *haha* cold." She realised he was laughing with her, then he managed to control himself for a while, looked up at her and said, "look, Im not spending Chrismas with anyone- my whole family's out of town, you want to come over?"
Grace though for a while, "Oh, all right, I guess I can wait for the buss later, besides I think it'll be a while anyway." He smiled at her and they headed to his place.
