The Difference Between Truth and Lies

Chapter1: It Seemed Normal…

Daniel was a normal fourteen year old kid, he had it all: star soccer player, perfect grades, good looks, great actor, awesome friends, rich parents, off-the-hook house, and the most perfect girlfriend, Melissa.
Melissa was something else. A dancer of twelve years taking everything from Pointe, to jazz, to tap, to modern, to Irish. Her body was amazing and her personality was even better. She was funny, smart, nice, sweet, cool, understanding….Melissa never had to try to act cool or beautiful…she just was…She had deep dark brown eyes and brown hair highlighted blonde occasionally and almost year round tanned skin. She played soccer and acted too and that’s how Melissa and Daniel met. They have been going out for about six months now.
Melissa had a lot of friends one included Alexis. Alexis was also very beautiful and fun to be around. Daniel could tell for a long time that Alexis was jealous of Melissa and that she was sort of hitting on him. He wasn’t going to let this get in the way of his relationship with him and Melissa. Because she deserved better than that. And of the fact that its pretty low to say ‘I was cheating on my girlfriend with her best friend!’
Alexis was extremely beautiful (it seems all the good looking people are friends) she had light green eyes and dark glistening long (down to the middle of her back) hair. Her body had not imperfections and seemed to always be glowing with a back-from-the-beach tan. When she smiled her perfectly white teeth highlighted her eyes making them sparkle. Daniel had had a time not flirting back, especially when Melissa would be around.
Daniel had a friend, Tom, who stared at Melissa all the time. Sometimes Daniel, being the protective boyfriend he is would have to put his arm around her shoulders to remind Tom of what was his.
This entire “perfect couple” thing between Melissa and Daniel and Alexis and Tom all changed around when school ended and summer began.
All four of them were invited to a party that was unsupervised and would probably have alcohol, drugs and possibly sex.
When they got there everything was fine. Just as he didn’t get drunk or a little tipsy or high or anything his parents would think was suspicious. One beer was okay…but no drugs…or sex…at all.
After about an hour things were in full swing and Daniel and Melissa were starting to get worried. Pressure started to build up more and more, and they didn’t know how many beers Alexis had had already.
“Come on you guys! It’s a party! You’re supposed to have fun!” Alexis said swaying on the spot and falling into Tom’s lap.
“God, Alexis!” Melissa said grabbing Alexis’s hand and pulling her up. “I’m cutting you off. You can’t have anything else to drink!” Melissa said.
Daniel hugged Melissa from behind the waist and she tilted her head up. He kissed her slowly, just to show her (and Alexis) that he cared about her.
“AWWWWWWW you love birds...make me sick! Ha ha Melissa, that might work if you weren’t the one to get me all the drinks!” Alexis said. “Hey Daniel! Isn’t that your friend from soccer? Nick or something?” Alexis continued.
“Oh it is. HEY NICK! OVER HERE!” Daniel screamed across the room over the loud music. A tall boy with blond hair turned around and waved at Daniel.
“Oh my God! I haven’t seen Nick in forever!” Melissa exclaimed.
Without thinking Daniel put down his coke and went over to Nick. Alexis was waiting for Tom, Melissa, and Daniel to be gone before she grabbed Daniel’s drink and took a little plastic bag out of her pocket and slipped a little white pill into his drink. It dissolved immediately. How long do I wait? Alexis thought. Before she can decide Daniel, Melissa and Tom came back.
“Hey you didn’t let some creep spike our drinks did you?” Daniel said laughing. “Nope, everything’s fine.” Alexis said.
Daniel took his drink and drank the last of it. Alexis smiled knowing what she was about to do. All she had to do now was get Melissa and Tom out of the way. But how?!
“Oh Tom! I need to ask you something, privately…about soccer….” Melissa said pulling Tom off into a corner.
“Wonder what it is?” Daniel said to Alexis. “Yeah, wonder…you know, I can’t hear you, why don’t we go some place…quieter.” Alexis said.
Under the influence of the drug Daniel followed her into a bedroom. Without warning, Alexis kissed him. Daniel kissed her back and fell on the bed. He lie there feeling his arms and legs straighten and bounded to the bed also his clothes being taken off. Alexis kissed him again and again. Daniel realized what was going on and tried to move. He realized Alexis wasn’t wearing anything either. He couldn’t move, now he realized what was happening when his arms and legs were straightening. He was being tied to the bed.
“No.” Daniel said trying somehow to get her off of him. “No! Stop! Get off me! Please stop. Ow, please stop!” Daniel begged.
“But I love you.” Alexis said and continued what she was doing. She kissed him everywhere.
“STOP! Alexis stop! This is rape. You can get in a lot of trouble for this. Please. You’re hurting me. No please! OW oh please stoppp….” Daniel said panicking now. He didn’t know what to do, he was pinned down. He hoped that Melissa would hear him screaming.
“HELP ME SOMEBODY, HELP! NO!”

Meanwhile Tom and Melissa were talking.
“So…I know Daniel’s birthday is coming up…and I wanted to throw him a surprise party. How does that sound?” Melissa said smiling.
“Oh awesome! He’d love it! But it’s not for another month.” Tom said.
“So? We still have to plan it. I was thinking of inviting the CoEd soccer team.” Melissa said.
“Yeah definitely,” Tom said “You know how much that team means to him.”

Once Alexis was done she got up and dressed. “You were good. You can thank me later.” she said and untied Daniel and left.
Daniel’s limbs fell limp on the bed and he started to cry. He dressed and left. By that time Melissa and Tom were back.
An hour later (and countless beers) and remembering walking into the bedrooms with other girls but he didn’t know how many times. Daniel said, “I think we should go.” the drug was wearing off.
“Why?” Melissa said smile fading. He gave her a look. “Okay…we’ll leave.” Melissa replied. They walked outside on the sidewalk to go home when Melissa noticed tears falling silently down her boyfriend’s face.
“Oh my God, Daniel are you okay?” Melissa said stopping. Daniel turned tward her wiping the tears off his face. Melissa had only seen him cry once when his grandfather died but Daniel had seen Melissa cry on many occasions. She kissed him lightly on the lips.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Let’s just go home,” he said in a quiet voice. He dropped Melissa off at her house and went home silently.
Crap. He thought, it’s 1:30 in the morning. He opened
the door to his house the kitchen light was on and his parents sat at the table with worried looks on their faces when they heard the door open his mom sprung up and ran to the door.
“WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!” she said. “Do you have any idea what time it is? What happened to you? Are you okay?”
“I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPNED! JUST GO AWAY I‘M-” Daniel said and fell back against the door and collapsed in a heap on the floor.
“Oh my God! Michael! Call the police! Daniel, Daniel…are you okay? Can you hear me?” Daniel’s mom said.
“Oh my God! Is he okay?” His dad exclaimed.
“I’m not sure…the police hurry!”
“Right.”
Michael phoned the police and they rushed to the house. Finding Daniel on the floor they took him in the ambulance.

“What happened?” Daniel asked two hours later. Melissa, Alexis, Tom, and his parents were standing over him.
“The doctor said you passed out drunk, son. Are you okay?” his dad Michael said.
“How are you feeling, honey?” His mom Amber said concern in her eyes.
“Dan, Are you okay now?” Melissa said. Daniel could tell she’d been crying
“Dude…are you okay?” Tom said. For the first time concern was in all of their eyes. All except Alexis.
“I’m fine…really…I am.” Daniel said. He made an effort to push himself up on the bed but was too weak to even try.
“No. Stay down…you need your energy.” Melissa said wiping tears from her eyes. “Can I talk to him alone?” she asked everyone. His parents nodded and left and so did Tom and Alexis.
Once everyone was gone Melissa said. “Daniel…the doctors said they found your wrists and your ankles badly bruised…they suggested that maybe you were bound…like some people do in rough sex. Were you sleeping with anyone?”
“What? No!” Daniel lied through his teeth. “Then what?” Melissa said looking into his eyes with no hint of a smile like she usually had.
“I…I don’t know. I blacked out I can’t remember. I wish I could.” now he knew why she’d looked like she was crying.
“You believe me right?” Daniel said hating lying to his girlfriend.
“Yes, I do believe you…should I not?” Melissa said going for the door.
“No it’s just. No please don’t go…I…I need you…”Daniel said outstretching his hand and broken, bruised wrist.
“I’ll be back…don’t worry.” Melissa said disappearing. Daniel’s mom came into the room.
“Honey? Are you okay? Can you please tell me what happened?” she said coming over to him, “Did you sleep with anyone?”
“I don’t know…I think, I’m not sure…”Daniel said truthfully.
“How many girls?” she said.
“I don’t know.”
“How could you not know?”
“I just don’t”
“Please honey…”
“Mom I don’t know how many girls I slept with okay?”
“You’re only fourteen…” she said and started sobbing.
“Mom please…don’t make this difficult I just want to go…”
“You are discharged tomorrow…” and with that she was gone too.

The next day Daniel was discharged and tried to get on with his life and trying to put that night behind him.
A month after the vicious rape (and trying to get on with his life) Melissa came over. They were in Daniel’s room as always “talking” which was really just….making out.
Suddenly, Daniel pulled away. For some reason, it didn’t feel right. He had to tell Melissa…but he couldn’t…he wouldn’t hurt her.
“What?” Melissa murmured.
“Noth-nothing…”Daniel said leaning back in to her again. Her lips tasted like strawberries while Alexis’s tasted like alcohol. Things were starting to get hotter and heavier. His shirt was off and hers was unbuttoned showing a little of her black lacy bra.
He broke away again. Melissa scoffed and leaned back as Daniel turned around to face her.
“What?” Daniel asked Melissa who looked toughly pissed.
“Your not acting yourself! Ever since that party, I’ve felt that you don’t want me any more. I’m starting to thank myself for not giving up my virginity yet, because then you would’ve broken up with me!” Melissa said and covered up.
Daniel felt a sudden pang of guilt. Virginity. She had to bring it up.
“Don’t say that…its not true.” Daniel said.
“Maybe I should just go.” Melissa said buttoning her shirt up.
“Melissa wait.” Daniel said getting up as Melissa grabbed her purse and walked to the bedroom door. Daniel blew out the candles that he hoped would’ve been romantic. He pulled on a button-down dress shirt and didn’t bother to button it. Melissa ran out of the room followed by Daniel protesting with Melissa.
Daniel’s mom looked at him inquiringly probably thinking he was promiscuous. Melissa closed the door. Daniel sighed.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” He said flatly and walked to his room.

About two or three months later, Alexis rang his doorbell, without Melissa there beside her. Like she usually was. Daniel then knew something was really wrong.
“Can I talk to you? Maybe we should go on a walk…” Daniel told his parents where he was going and left.
“So what did you want to talk about?” Daniel said stopping on a bridge over a quiet stream.
“I needed to tell you that…I’m late…for my period…I’m pregnant.” Alexis said in a barely audible whisper.
“What? I don’t think I heard you. Because I thought you just said you were pregnant.”
“No you heard me right…I’m pregnant.”
“Is it mine?” Daniels heart raced and his palms got sweaty when he uttered the words.
“Yes.”
“How do you know?” he questioned. Alexis didn’t seem to care.
“You’re the only person I slept with.”
“Whose side are we going to tell first…mine or yours?” Daniel asked his hands shaking.
“Mine.”

Later that night on IM Daniel and Alexis were talking about what they were going to do.

A few moments later, Melissa signed on.

Daniel’s mom noticed how weird he had been acting lately and asked once and for all what was wrong.
“Daniel…please eat something….” She’d say.
“I’m not hungry.” Daniel would say for the fifth time.
“Some how I don’t believe that…you haven’t eaten in days.
“No I have! Why are you always on my case?!”
“Daniel, you’re my son! What the hell am I supposed to do? You haven’t been acting yourself lately!”
“You know what. I wish I wasn’t your son.” he said firmly to his mom.
“You didn’t mean that…”
“No I did.” and with that he turned and walked right out of the house with only the clothes on his back and a cell phone. He wasn’t sure where he’d go but he knew he’d come back. Eventually.




“Mom, this is really hard for me to tell you…I got someone pregnant.” Daniel said in a whisper.
“Who Melissa?” his mom asked, voice shaking with rage and shock even though she didn’t show it. His parents always loved Melissa, wanted Daniel to marry her.
“No mom. Alexis.” Daniel said.
“You were cheating on your girlfriend? With her best friend?”
“No it’s not like that! I was drunk I didn’t know what I was doing!”
“Alright…” his mom said disappointed in her only son “you’re not keeping it are you?” she asked
“Yeah we are.”
“Daniel a baby is going to ruin your life! You can’t!”
“Mom…trust me I know what im doing.”
“No you don’t…you can’t have a child…you’re only a child yourself…. You can’t raise it…you just cant…”
“Watch me.” Daniel said aggravated and with that he went up to his room and got on his computer. His dad walked in the door to see his son walk up the stairs aggravated and his wife sitting on the couch with tears falling silently.
“Did I miss something?” he said sitting down. “What happened?” he continued.
“Alexis is pregnant.” Amber said looking at her husband.
“Oh well that’s not our problem.” Michael said half laughing.
“Yes it is.”
“How? What’s wrong?”
“It’s Daniel’s baby.”
“WHAT?!”

Daniel signed on his IM account on a different screen name and saw Nick was on.

Daniel saw other people on but didn’t really feel much like talking right now. School was going to start soon and he didn’t know what to do about the baby. He put up an away message and crawled into bed and turned on his TiVo.
