Chapter 1
He had been watching her for hours. All alone, in her little house, she kept it so clean and tidy. Right now she was making dinner. Pasta, it looked like, though he couldn’t be too sure. There wasn’t a direct window to the kitchen so he had to go one what she brought with her into the dining room.
Just as she was sitting down to eat her cat jumped up onto the table and stuck his little nose into her food, deciding he liked it better than his dry food on the counter. She fruitlessly tried to shoo him away but he was persistent, giving her no choice but to arrange a small bowl for him. Her silent stalker watched from his car and had to chuckle. She was such a push over, how was it she had managed to stay in this world without being touched by its cruelties? Soon it would be time to show her just how cruel fate could be, but not tonight. Tonight he had other plans.
Putting away his binoculars he sped off into the night, headed towards town. He had a date with his daughter.
***
“Daddy!” she squealed in delight as she ran to him and he spun her around, just as he always did when he saw her. She was getting a little big for it now, being 7, but she’d never admit that, and he loved to see her smile in such glee.
Finally he set her down and gazed past her and to her mother, standing with her arms crossed and a look somewhere between dismay and contempt. Their divorce had been finalized three years ago but she still held a grudge. She had originally tried for full custody but lost when the judge on the case realized there was absolutely nothing wrong, on paper, with the child’s father.
“Make sure you have her home early this time, James,” she said to her ex-husband. “She has school tomorrow and I want her to get a good night’s sleep. Have her home by 9:30, no exceptions.”
“Oh Meryl, you really need to lighten up sometimes. I never see you smile anymore. Doesn’t that new boyfriend of yours give you anything to smile about?” he teased.
“That is absolutely none of your business.” Turning to here daughter she said, “Be good now, and if he misbehaves let me know.”
“Daddy never misbehaves. Isn’t that right, daddy?”
“It’s absolutely right, darling,” he said, ruffling her hair. “I never, ever misbehave.”
Meryl snorted and turned heel, heading back into the house. James watched her go, still aroused by the sway of her hips. Clearing his throat he turned to his daughter and asked her, “So, Hannah-Banana, where would you like to go for dinner?”
“Friendly’s!” she responded almost immediately. He expected that, since it was her favorite restaurant. James reached down and started to tickle her, and she ran, giggling, to the car. He followed, grinning all the way.
***
He was watching her again; watching diligently as she paced back and forth with worry. James knew, because of the taps he put on her phones, that her mother was very sick. She had visited her that day in fact, and the only reason she was at home was that her brother forced her to go. Even with her face creased with anxiety she looked beautiful. How she had managed to go unnoticed all this time seemed impossible to him. There was no one in her life, though she was like a rose just blooming and ready to be plucked. Her name, actually, was “Rose”. It was such a simple and sweet name.
With Rose’s mother now being in the hospital, it provided the perfect weakness. So far it had been impossible to get closer than 50 feet away from her without detection. She never went out to eat or to the library, never met with friends unless they came over to her house. It was as if she had planned her life around preventing someone like him from finding her. His plan was already formulated in his mind; all he had to do now was to wait for the exact moment. This was his favorite part.
***
“Morning, James,” his secretary said to him in greeting. She looked bright and sunny in contrast to the Monday morning blues that he was already feeling. She appraised him with a stern eye. “Looks like you had a long weekend. Are things going okay with Meryl?”
“Ha, you’re funny,” he said sarcastically. James sighed dramatically and continued. “Now she wants the house, too. Really, I don’t understand how someone as charming and loving as her can be such a bitch sometimes. Please, pardon my language. You know how it can be with her.”
His secretary opened her mouth to speak once again, but just then a co-worker came by and slapped a meaty hand onto his shoulder. “Looks like it’s going to be a busy week, Jimmy-boy,” he boomed. “The mergers have come through and it seems as though we’re going to have to crank it out fast as far as the new ad campaigns are concerned. Hope you didn’t want to go home anytime soon. How’s the family?”
James looked back with a barely masked look of disgust. “The family’s fine,” he said, trying to imitate a pleasant tone, “The girls have just discovered cell phones and our boy is insisting on a new iPod. Really, Charlie, can you believe how technologically minded these kids can be?
“Oh, I know what you mean. Just yesterday my youngest had a fit about all the gadgets that her friends have. Jesus, she’s in second grade. I can’t handle it. You know, we should all get together and have a picnic. If I recall, your kids are about the same age as mine, right? We’ll make an afternoon of it. What do you say?”
“Sounds great, Charlie. I’ll let the wife know and get back to you. It was great talking to you.”
“You too, Jimmy-boy, keep up the good work!”
As Charlie walked off, James turned to his secretary who was trying her damnedest not to laugh out loud. He gave her his best glare as he stalked into his office, grabbing his messages before he slammed the door behind him. His body may have been at work, but his mind was with Rose.

“Hi Jimmy, it’s Carla. I was just wondering when I’ll get to see you again. You were so amazing at dinner, and afterwards… I just can’t wait to get together again. Give me a call back at this number.”
James shut his phone and cringed. There were two reasons why he never wanted to see that woman again. One, because he hated being called “Jimmy” and had hated it even when he was young enough to warrant such a thing, and two, because she was one of the most dull women he had ever had the pleasure to fuck. Now that he had his sights on such a gem as Rose, there was really nothing to compare. However, a fuck was a fuck… He flipped open his phone again and called her back.
