He was like a summer job, she reflected. A summer job that you get for whatever reason, and somehow find yourself still stuck with twenty years later because you get used to it and really; at this point who else is going to hire you? Something that is supposed to be a temporary circumstance and instead ends up being a lifetime commitment without you ever really knowing how or why it happened.

He loves her. She knows that without a doubt. He loves her in a way that she herself has never been able to love anyone. He loves her like something out of a fairy tale, with all of his heart.

Not that she doesn’t care for him. She does. Sometimes. Mostly she is numb. (Leave me alone.)

He is a good man. She knows this. He never beats her, or gets drunk or takes drugs. He would never cheat on her. He tells her he loves her every day. She always says, "I love you too." She wants him dead.

Its nothing personal really.

Her life is easy. She knows that too. She doesn’t have to work, and he pays all of the bills. He never asks very much of her at all.

In her spare time she investigates poisons on the internet. There has to be something out there, lethal and untraceable. One day she will find it. She loves watching shows like CSI and Law and Order. She gets a lot of good tips from those shows on how to kill someone and how to cover it up if she does.

“You know I adore you.” He says smiling. “I know.” She murmurs, smiling back.

Again she is grateful that he cant read her mind. (I want to kill you.) She imagines burying him as they cuddle on the couch and watch the show.

His birthday she buys him a cake and a few small presents. He is as tickled as a little kid.

When he blows the candles out he looks at her and says, “I feel like I already have everything I could ever want. I don’t have anything to wish for.” She knows he means every word of it. She also knows what she would wish for if it were her. (Die! Die! Die!)

To her credit, she has only actually tried to murder him once or twice in the time they have been married. He stubbornly refused to die both times. She knows that on at least one of the attempts; he had suspected her of doing something. In the end he chose not to believe it.

Her fear of prison and a certain amount of guilt have kept her from trying it more often. She begs God everyday to let it be the last for him.

He kisses her goodbye as he heads off to work. “I love you.” He says and she always says it back. Always.(I hate you so much.)

Every time he pulls out of the driveway she prays that he wont make it back alive, but that forever turns out to be just wishful thinking on her part. He always comes back. He always hugs her close when he gets there.

At night they lay cradled beside each other as they have every night of the past twenty years. He snuggles in tight behind her. “You know I would die if you ever left me.” He whispers.

In the dark, he can’t see her grimace.

Mournfully, she thinks that he might not ever die then. "Ill never leave you." She whispers back, and she means every word.

She will be there every day of the rest of his life. However long that may be.....
