Courage in Loss
Paul brushed his arms down his clothing smoothing invisible wrinkles. Brushing fingers through his hair one more time he let out a great sigh and walked out of his house. In what seemed like brief moments had him standing in the shadow of a cold grey building that loomed into the endless blue sky. Intimidating was an underestimate when it came to describing this building, but it was what was insides that were truly frightening. Yet despite knowing this a smile ghosted over Paul’s features as he pulled open the door and walked inside. This time it will be different, this time they’ll notice, he thought to himself as he plunged into the chaos that was high school.
Students filled the halls, brightly colored, loud and happy. They moved in packs, assured in the fact that they were safe in numbers. It was easy to find his pack, tucked away in a corner, safe in the shadows. With a smile I make my way to them with no fear as I navigate the difficult halls. To the left I notice the predators eyeing up my pack, looking for the weakest to pick on, yet still no fear enters my stride. Confidence is in my every movement when I finally get to my pack, they are talking in hushed angry whispers, afraid to be over heard. Sarah, a petite red head had tears running down her face as she argued with Troy, a fairly round boy, the rest of the group seemed to unsure to join. I faded into the group wanting to find out about the conflict before interfering:
“They should know what they did, we owe it to him” Sarah whispered harshly while waving her hands in emphasis.
“No! And what will that change, they don’t care.” Troy barely seemed to be holding in a yell.
“But they should, we should make them…”
“How??? How do we make them care for someone they only noticed to pick on. How do we make them care that they pushed him to this. Will it stop them from pushing us that far.”
Sarah’s face crumpled and I thought about stepping up to help her, “I wont I wont. NEVER! We don’t deserve this, we don’t deserve to be prey, he didn’t deserve it…” Her arms circled around her as if trying to hold all the pieces together and finally I stepped forward to place my hand on her shoulder… it passed right though and with a sigh I remembered that I couldn’t help anymore. I was gone to them. But to me I was stuck watching as everything I had done got forgotten by everyone except my pack.
Troy stepped forward and placed his hand where mine had passed though “I miss Paul to, but he’s not here anymore and you are. They wont change until it effects them, and it never will. But it did effect us and we will remember.” He helped her up and the pack made to comfort her as she pulled herself together.
Finally head held high she turned to them, to him, “Then lets leave the shadows” and they plunged into the moving mass of people in the halls. And I felt all the pride in the world watching my small lioness take hold of the pack.
