He Who Was Fated

I was a child when I met him. He was in the crowd and dressed like everyone else, but his eyes and his hair stood out among them. Silver in all the dirt and coal. He seemed about a year or so older than me, and I had told my guards to stop. My uncle had told me no, we couldn’t, a question in his eyes. But I was the prince and soon-to-be-king once I became of age, once my thirteenth year came along.

His hair was just that, silver that ran with sapphire blue streaks, as if his hair was actually the sea blue and the silver was just the bright shine from the sunlight. Those curious eyes matched the blueness in his hair as they tried to stare within the darkness of the carriage I was in. I wanted him, and not the way a man wanted a woman but the way a child wants a play thing. He was mine as he was fated to be. Mine and mine alone.

I pointed at the boy from within the darkness, and only my uncle could see. The man had jet black hair with no traces of grey to be found as a memento of his age. His eyes, those cold, black eyes always gleamed when staring at me; the sort of feeling a lamb would feel when a wolf looks at them. But I didn’t understand at that time. Being six was a disadvantage at some things. My uncle looked in the direction I was pointing and was frowning when he turned back to me. “Do you want that thing?”

I grinned impishly at him. Silly man, of course I did, otherwise I would never have taken a second glance at the crowd.

He called to a guard, whispering in his ears for a bit before turning to me to ask for an approval, “Would you like your new pet in near you now or would you rather wait to have him properly cleaned?” He had a disgusted look upon his face, I think because he was offended at the prospect of having to share the carriage with something so dirty.

“Now,” I demanded. “Now, now, now, now!”

The temporary king nodded at the guard. I waited eagerly. There were some shouts of alarm, another shout that was an order, and then silence as the silver haired boy was shoved at the feet on my uncle and I. I was about to kneel down to help the boy, but the black haired man glared at me that I would be doing no such thing.

“Boy,” said my uncle, making the new pet cringe into a fearful little ball on the floor. “Look at your new master, boy. You belong to him now and forever. If he tells you to crawl, you will crawl like the pet you are. If he tell you to kill yourself, you will kill yourself. You are to protect him with all your life. Do you understand?”

The boy began to cry, and my uncle left him to it, knowing the boy understood the situation. There was silence until I whispered, “Saykred.” He looked up a little and smiled at me.

Why did I choose that name? I don’t know. It felt like it was his rightful name. Don’t ask me why though, but apparently, he knew that was his true name too. Later, I would come to understand he had never had a name before I met him, a nameless boy and very much poor. He had told me, that he had been searching for his proper name for a long time.

---- End Chapter

AN: One night when I stayed up to finish writing my analysis papers, I opened up a new .doc and started to type down what was in my mind. So another story was brought to life.
