Prologue
In the time unknown to the rest of the world a powerful creature of darkness roamed the earth. In these days the earth was a lush, beautiful planet full of life and purity. The evil entity known as Galamoth, wanted the planet for his own evil ambitions, but for this he had to concentrate his power for seven days. Then he would be able to conquer and his rule would go uncontested. Using the hatred and malice of mankind, Galamoth had all the power that he needed to rid the planet of good and rule it. Unable to stand the evil the world had come under; two humans set out to destroy Galamoth. They were to liberate the world and be forgotten in history. Their names were Kali and Tur.
“Kali…how can we kill him? We are but humans and he is a god.” Tur said to Kali as the ascended the stairs to the throne room.
“We will worry about when we get there.” Kali answered Tur. They reached the door but didn’t go through it.
“Listen Tur, once we go through these doors I’m not coming back out.”
“What?!?”
“I will do whatever it takes to stop Galamoth and protect my child…Even give up my life.”
“No you can’t Kali, I love you.”
“I sorry, but it’s my purpose. Pass down the knowledge to your daughter and my son and have them pass it on to their children.”
“Why?”
“Even though we are gone…Galamoth will still come back. Our decedents are the only ones who can stop them.”
They both entered the doors. Kali died in the great battle and Tur passed the knowledge on but somewhere during the course of history the knowledge was lost and the decedents of these heroes were separated through the course of time.
Chapter 1: Friends
“You’re getting better!” a young man said as he sparred with swords against another.
“I was always better than you Vincent!” the other said jokingly.
Vincent was a tall and physically fit. His long hair and choice of clothing had always denoted rebellious personality, but he was a very just and honorable person.
“You wish Brian!” said Vincent as he charged at him.
Brian was Vincent’s rival and best friend. They had been through high school and were enrolled in college together. He was large and well built. Brian had short hair and slightly darker skin than Vincent.
“That’s why I’ve been winning for the past week!” exclaimed Brian.
“I’ve just been letting you!” Vincent responded immediately. “Ill just have to start trying!!” he continued as he charged at Brian.
They were in dead heat with each other. As one struck the other blocked and responded with their fullest might. Striking and blocking each others attacks, neither of them had a chance of winning. When Vincent’s body was giving in to the fatigue, he struck and locked swords with Brian. While both were trying to win the battle of strength, a young woman’s voice was heard at the door.
“Boys and their toys…”
Immediately both looked over and slowly let down their weapons. Both fell to the ground to rest their tired bodies. The young woman walked over to them with a water bottle and two towels in her hand.
“Here.” She said as she handed the bottle and the towels to them. “You guys look like you need these.”
“Thanks” they said as the fought over the bottle.
“Ahh… that hit the spot. What’s up Sarah?” asked Vincent as he gave the bottle to Brian and started wiping the sweat from his face.
“I got out of class early and I just wanted to see how you were doing.” She said. Sarah had been their friend since they were children. She was tall and slender with dark, long hair. She is very beautiful, and very intelligent. Sarah was also enrolled in the same school as Brian and Vincent.
“Did you want me to give you a ride to school today?” asked Vincent.
“No, that’s ok I got my car back from the shop today. I just hope it doesn’t break down again before my next paycheck.” She said with a smile. “I just wanted to see if you needed anything or even woke up for class.”
“Thanks, but I’m fine. I keep on telling you to get another car but you just don’t listen. I know that you have the money, but I know you’re saving it for something.” said Vincent as he and Brian were getting up from the floor.
“Yeah, that’s why I’m still driving this old rusted piece of junk.” She responded.
“Isn’t you’re next class starting in a little while?” asked Brian.
“Yeah, I should really get going. I’ll see you two later.” She said as she started walking towards the front door.
“Bye.” they both said as she walked out the front door.
“You know she likes you, right?” said Brian.
“Huh, no she doesn’t” said Vincent.
“Yeah, she does. You can see it. Why don’t you go after her? You would make a good couple.”
“That’s enough!” snapped Vincent. “Sorry. Look she’s a great girl, but I don’t want to hurt her. I’m just glad that she’s my friend.”
“Yeah…” said Brian. “Hey!! We got to hurry or we’re going to be late for school!!” Brian hurried out the door and Vincent rushed up the stairs to take a shower and quickly get dressed.
Vincent came through the classroom door just as soon as the bell rang and quickly sat at his seat. Out of breath, he put his head down as the professor began his lecture. Vincent looked up at the class.
“Wow…” Vincent thought to himself. “Everyone is here…there’s never this many people here.” But as usual Vincent just shrugged it off and put his heads down. He began to think about what Brian had said about Sarah. Vincent had always had an attraction to her but never wanted to do anything about it. He didn’t want to because he was afraid. He was afraid to lose her as a friend. Luis has had girlfriends before but the relationships never lasted.
All of a sudden a strange feeling ran through his body. To him it felt like an incredible cold was running through his body and a crushing feeling grabbed his chest. He looked around and saw that everyone else was in discomfort. Then, a sharp piercing sound flooded Vincent’s mind. He writhed and screamed in pain as he held his head. He managed to open his eyes and he saw everyone screaming but he couldn’t hear them over the piercing sound in his mind. The pain was too much for him to bear and he began to put his head down on the desk. He began to drift away from consciousness, and the sound had drifted away along with it.
“What is this I’m feeling…?”
Chapter 2: Nightmare
Vincent was in a dark world. He looked around him and saw nothing but empty darkness. He couldn’t even see his hand in front of his face. There was no ground beneath his feet and he felt like if he was floating in the air.
“Where am I…? Am I blind…? Am I dead…?” He said as his voice echoed around him. He felt his heart begin to beat faster, he was scared. So many thoughts flooded his mind and he began to panic. But just as he was about to break, he saw something far off in the distance. He squinted his eyes hoping to get a clearer visual but all he saw was a small dot of light. As if he willed his body Vincent began to drift towards the light. It began to grow as he got closer to it. Then it started to take shape. Vincent’s heart began to race the closer he got to the light. As he got up to it he realized that it was a woman who back was towards him. She was wearing a white, glowing robe.
“An angel…?” He thought to himself. Something came over him and willed him to put his hand on her shoulder. He felt something enter his body and fill him up inside. It was a warm feeling that was opposite of the horrific chills that invaded his body in the classroom. Then she slowly began to turn to him
“Vincent…”
His eyes opened and he suddenly found himself back in his classroom. Everyone around him was lying on the floor. They looked dead, but Vincent was too afraid to check. His mind went blank as he stared at all the bodies around him. Once he collected himself the first thing that came to his mind was Sarah. Then he began towards the door slowly and carefully, so as not to stumble over the bodies of his classmates. He grabbed the door knob. As he gave it a turn he felt something behind him and quickly turned around to see what it was. But there was nothing behind him except for bodies. He quickly opened the door, went through it and shut it behind him. If there was something in there he didn’t want it going through the door without him knowing.
The hallway was no different then the classroom Vincent just left. Bodies littered the corridor. Sarah’s class was quite a few rooms down so Vincent began to walk. About half way down the hallway, he heard a groan. He quickly turned around and saw a body move. He knew who it was. It was Brendan. Brendan was the star quarter-back and the most arrogant student there. Vincent never liked him but he had no choice to go and help him. He was the first living person that Vincent had seen since this nightmare began, so he rushed over to him.
“Brendan! Are you ok? What’s going on here?” He asked. But Brendan lack of response startled Vincent. “Hey!” Vincent raised his voice. Brendan just looked at him and gave a soft grunt. Brendan looked like he was about to pass out. Vincent noticed that his eyes were becoming red as if the blood vessels in his eyes had all suddenly burst at the same time. Suddenly Brendan began to scream and writhe in pain. Then some of the people around him began to do the same. All Vincent could hear was the agony and pain of the screaming people around him. His heart began to race with fear as he started to slowly walk away from them. Their skin started, to what it seemed like, decay off, and there bodies began to change. Vincent began to run away and just as suddenly as the screaming started, it had stopped. Vincent stopped and turned around.
He couldn’t believe what he saw. Their bodies had seemed to have transformed into something else, not human. Their fingers had grown longer and the nails became long and sharp. The bodies grew longer and there skin became dark brown. Their legs grew longer, slimmer and the same color as their skin. Their heads is what changed the most. Their teeth became long and sharp like fangs. The ears now were elongated; their hair seemed to have fallen out, and the eyes now were small red circles on their faces.
Vincent felt a terrible feeling run through out his body, as if it were alerting him to a danger. Then the creature that was once Brendan got up and stared at Vincent. It growled and charged at him. Vincent could see the red circles coming at him as he prepared to defend against the attack. It swiped with its claws and Vincent was barley able to avoid the attack. The creature’s face almost looked stunned, but it was hard to tell if it made a face at all. Then it delivered a flurry of swipes and Vincent could barley defend all of them. Vincent saw his opening for an attack and swung with all of his strength and hit the creature. It flew back, and was momentarily dazed. He clutched his fist because it felt like he had just hit a brick wall. When he looked up, he saw the creature running at him. As it was running it seemed to have slowed down slightly. So without hesitation, Vincent dodged the attack, hit the creature in the stomach. The creature hunched over in pain, Vincent grabbed its head with all his might and threw it straight through the wall. It seemed like the creature had been subdued. Vincent couldn’t believe at what he had just done. As he looked around he could see that more of the creatures that had once been human began to rise.
“SHIT!!” He said to himself. Vincent knew that he couldn’t take them all on his own. He looked around and saw a wooden mop. He took the top in his hand and struck the bottom with an open palm. Before he could think a creature swiped at his head. He dodged and stuck it with the jagged end of the stick. Not allowing the creatures the time to attack, Vincent went on the offensive. He struck several times before the creatures had a chance to attack. Every time that Vincent knocked them down they got back up almost instantly. Barley being able to move away from their claws Vincent knew that he couldn’t keep this up for long. He rushed at one of the creatures and drove the jagged end of the stick straight through its chest and out its back. It gave an extremely loud scream. As Vincent slid the stick out of the creature’s chest he immediately swung the stick onto another’s head and a loud crack was heard. They both fell and didn’t get back up. He delivered devastating, lethal blows to the creatures and they seemed to work. Then he suddenly heard a woman’s scream.
“Sarah!” he whispered. He quickly run to the end of the corridor and broke through the door that leads into Sarah’s classroom. There he saw Sarah alive but facing one of the creature. Vincent ran to the creature and hit it on the face and grabbed it and threw it out of the window. “Sarah, are you all right?” he asked. But Sarah was too scared to answer him. Vincent heard more of the creatures snarling out side of the room, so he made a rash move. He took Sarah in his arms and jumped out of the window. Vincent landed on his back with Sarah still in his arms. He then carried her in his arms as he ran to his car. As he was running he looked around and saw dozens of the creatures and a couple of people being slaughtered by them. I can’t help them, he thought to himself. They got into his car, turned the ignition and speed away from the hell behind them.
Sarah had broken down in the car and was crying as the arrived at Vincent’s house. When they stopped Vincent had to help Sarah get a hold of herself.
“Sarah!”
“Look at me!”
“Look into my eyes!”
“You have to come back to me!”
“You’re safe now! Those things are gone.” Sarah looked into his eyes and she slowly came back to reality.
“Vincent …what…what… ha…what happened?” she asked in a broken voice.
“I don’t know, but if we’re going to live through this then you have to be strong, ok?” he responded
“Ok.” She said
“Come on Sarah. Let’s go inside, we’ll be a lot safer there then out here.” As the made there way to the front door they could here the growls of those creatures in the distance. They were very strong so Vincent hoped that they would be safe inside, but that could not be the case. His house was very secure with burglar bars, strong locks and solid doors but those we’re not built with these creatures in mind. Inside, Vincent gave Sarah a glass of tea and sat down next to her.
“Hold me…” said Sarah
“What?”
“…please…just hold me in your arms…” complying with her request, Vincent took Sarah in his arms and held her tight. As they both sat there, they tried to make sense of what they had just experienced.
“Why didn’t I save them…”
Chapter 3: Thoughts
“What do you think happened?”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you think anybody else survived?”
“I don’t know.”
“What are we going to do next?”
“I don’t know?”
“Do…do you think we’ll live through this?”
“….I…I don’t know” Vincent hesitated. “Look, we’re alive…I saw more people, but…they couldn’t fend off the creatures, and I wasn’t able to save them. For now we have to do what we have to do, to survive. We can leave the city, but we don’t know how much of this has spread.” Just then, a banging was heard at the door. Both snapped at the door and then looked at each other Vincent picked up one of his swords that he had displayed on his walls. He held it at a ready position as he neared the door. Then the banging was heard again.
“Vincent! Put the sword down and open the door!”
It was Brian. He had survived the beginning of this nightmare. Vincent and Sarah had given a sigh of relief as the heard Brian’s voice and opened the door. Brian had looked like hell but he was not hurt. His cloths were tattered and he had a pistol in his right hand. He walked in, sat down on the couch and sighed.
“Are you hurt?” asked Vincent.
“No, but I feel terrible.” Responded Brian. “I managed to save three people from the school but…they didn’t make it here. Two were killed right in front of me and the other ran away.”
“It’s not your fault.” Sarah consoled Brian. ”Those creatures… they’re brutal, Vincent was barley able to save me let alone any others.”
“I know…but I just…I know I could have saved them!” Brain said. Sarah walked over to Brian and gave him a hug.
“Thanks…” Brain told Sarah.
Hours passed and all three sat there think about their situation and trying to figure out how they’re going to get out of the city. Then finally, after they had a chance to recuperate from their mental anguish Brain had thought of something.
“Why don’t we go out of the city? We can take the back roads out of here.”
“But we don’t know how far this has spread…It might be just as worse out there then in the city.” responded Vincent.
“Well, we can’t stay here forever can we!” Brian began to shout.
“Well, we’re safe for now aren’t we!” Vincent snapped back. Sarah looked in horror as they both began to argue.
“STOP IT! STOP, BOTH OF YOU!!” she shouted, “Why are you shouting! We’re in the middle of a horrific nightmare and you two are bickering like an old married couple! So both of you better cut this shit out or we’re going to end up dead!” Both of them were stunned at what they just heard. They looked at each other nodded
“Sorry.” They said to each other
“We’re going to need some weapons if we’re going to get out of here alive.” suggested Brian.
“I know.” Responded Vincent. “Both of you follow me.” Vincent took them to a room at the far end of the hallway. Both Brian and Sarah always wondered what was in there because that was the only room that Vincent had never let them in. When they reached the door Vincent pulled out his keys and unlocked the door. Inside, they saw something that they could not believe. The room was filled with guns. There were racks and rows filled with ammunition and guns. There was even a shooting range inside the room. Vincent was a man who despised guns, and what they stood for so the room did not fit him.
“This is my brother’s warehouse.” Vincent said. “After he came back from the war he started this. He had collected so many weapons that he had to make his own room to accommodate them.”
“You never told me that you had a brother.” Sarah said
“I never told you two because I didn’t want to burden you with my problems. After our parents died, we ran away. We lived on the streets for four long years. We had taken care of each other all that time. When we finally got on our feet, the war had just started. Shortly after, my brother was drafted and left me here. When he came back he was different, like a different person. He started collecting guns and ammunition. I guess the war had scared him. Then when the war kicked off again, he left to fight and this time…he didn’t come back.”
“I’m sorry.” Sarah tried to console him.
“I don’t want you to feel sorry for me! That’s why I never told anyone.” Vincent snapped. “We can use these weapons against the creatures to escape. Take only what we need and nothing more.”
“”Why?” asked Brian.
“Because we have to travel light. If we have too much equipment then it will only slow us down.” Responded Vincent. They got a duffle bag from the corner, began to fill them up with ammunition and started loading clips with bullets. They chose small but powerful handguns and three shotguns. Once they had gotten all of their equipment together the loaded it into Vincent’s car.
“I think we should rest before we head out.” Said Vincent
“You’re right, it is very late and we had a very long day.” Said Sarah.
“Sarah, you know were my room is. You can sleep there and Brian you can sleep in the spare room. I’ll take first watch and Brian I’ll wake you up in a few hours to take the last watch, ok?” Vincent said.
“That sounds good.” Agreed Brian.
“What about me?” asked Sarah “Don’t I get a watch?”
“No, Vincent and I work better sleepy.” Brian said with a grin. Vincent nodded in agreement.
“That’s unfair.” She pouted.
“Ok. We’ll wake you up for your watch, ok?” asked Vincent. Sarah just looked at him, rolled her eyes and walked away. With out a word Brian just left to the room where he would sleep in. Vincent looked to his walls and picked a sword from one and chambered a pistol that was on the coffee table. He sat down on one of the chairs near the window. Vincent patiently sat there waiting for any indication of trouble. The minutes passed like hours and little by little Vincent’s experiences were catching up to him. He wondered why all this was happening. He tried to figure out what had kept them alive and why he was able to kill the creatures, the dream that he had plagued his mind too. It seemed so real but yet he couldn’t believe what he experienced. He thought that maybe it was real and that woman had given him a gift, a power to defeat the creatures. Then he quickly shrugged it off. He knew he never believed in this supernatural stuff and he wasn’t about to start now. He just concentrated on the window and whatever happens outside of it.
“I’ll save them…”
Chapter 4: Love and Loss
Vincent sat there for four hours but it seemed like days to him. One more hour and his watch was over. He was relieved and thankful.
“Hey.” He heard Sarah’s voice behind him. “You ok?” She asked.
“Yeah I’m ok. What’s wrong?” He asked
“I couldn’t sleep…” She responded. “…and I was worried about you.”
“You don’t have to worry about me. I’ve…” Just before he could finish his sentence, she leaned over a kissed him passionately.
“I’ve always had feelings for you and…and I just wanted you to know…just incase that we don’t make it out of this…I love you. I have always loved you, and I will always love you, now and forever.” She said to him.
“Sarah…” He told her as he looked deep into her eyes. “…I love you” Vincent said as he leaned in and kissed her. Then leaned on his shoulder and waited with him until his watch was over. The hour went quicker than the last four. Being together was a relief for them, as if their company soothed their tensions of the nightmare they were apart of. But Vincent couldn’t help regretting his decision. He did not want to hurt Sarah in any way and he always thought that with love, always came hurt. That’s not what he wanted for her. Vincent woke up Sarah, who had fallen asleep on his shoulder and proceeded to the room where Brian slept. He woke up Brian and he snapped to attention as soon as Vincent did. Brian knew the job he had to do and he was ready for it.
As Vincent was going to lie on the bed Sarah walked through the door.
“Are you going to sleep here?” She asked.
“Yeah”
“Why don’t you come over here with me, I don’t want to be alone.”
“Ok.” Vincent said as he got up and walked to his bedroom. They lay down, but Vincent still felt uneasy.
“Hold me…please.” As before he complied with her request and held her close. “I just feel safer when I’m in your arms…like nothing can hurt me.” As soon as she finished her sentence, Vincent held her close and tight. Together they closed their eyes and drifted away.
It felt like he had just closed his eyes for a second and suddenly Brian told him that it was time to get ready. Without leaving any time to spare they got their equipment together and began to mentally prepare for the unexpected. Vincent and Brian had a pistol in their left hand and a sword on the back of their waist. Sarah did not know how to use a sword so she just had a pistol in each hand. Ready for the worst, they opened the front door and stepped out. Vincent and Brian help their pistols up and had their other hands on the handle of the swords on their waists and scanned the area around them as they walked towards the car. Once they reached the car they quickly got in, started the engine and drove away.
“Ok, well we made it this far.” Brian said.
“Sure did…” responded Vincent. “…so what now? Where do you want me to go now?”
“Well we can’t take the highway. I saw it before I got to your house yesterday. Just take the back roads out and well figure it from there.” Brian said. They drove for about five straight hours and not one of them spoke a word. As they neared the city limits they noticed a strange glow radiating from the air further up ahead. They all wondered what it was it did not want to think anything yet. As they got closer they noticed that the glow seemed more like a veil and it seemed to stretch all the way up to the sky. When they finally got up to it they stopped and got of the car. Vincent walked up to it a touched it. It seemed to ripple away from his finger like water after a pebble has been dropped in it. He tried to push through it, but the veil gave and didn’t allow him to go through. Even with all his might he still couldn’t go through it. His frustrations began to show and he pulled his pistol from his holster and shot straight into the veil. It caught the bullets as they entered the veil. They looked embedded in it but shortly after the slowly slid out, and the same when his finger touched the veil, it just rippled like water. As his patience was wearing thin, he unsheathed his sword from his waist and slashed the nearly invisible veil. But his sword got stuck as soon as it cut into the veil.
Vincent pulled his sword out and looked a Brian thinking that he brought them all the way our here for nothing. Suddenly he noticed a figure in the distance. A figure they knew all to well. Vincent’s eyes widened in fear as he recognized the ghastly figure running towards them.
“SHIT THEY FOUND US!!!” Vincent yelled as he ran to the car. Both Sarah and Brian looked back and realized that they were in trouble. They quickly got into the car turned it on. Not being able to move forward they had no choice but to drive towards the city and the creature that had discovered them. By the time the turned around, more of the creatures appeared over the horizon. Vincent floored the gas and they speed towards them. The tires screeched and smoked as the car peeled off.
Vincent took aim with his car at one of the creatures and sped towards it. As it grew nearer in front of them, the creature jumped onto the hood of the car. Brian took out his pistol and shot two rounds into the creature’s chest. It screamed in pain as it rolled of the hood and into the pavement. Almost immediately after it hit the ground it got on its feet and began running towards the speeding car. The rest of the creatures continued to charge at the car as it sped towards them. Vincent plowed through threw the group trying to hit as many as possible. The car jerked with every impact and loud thud. Brian continued to shoot at the creatures as they appeared in front of the car. All of a sudden a loud thud and large indentation was made on the roof of the car. Sarah picked up a pistol from the bag, took aim and pulled the trigger. Vincent looked in the rear view mirror and saw a dark figure roll from the roof of the car. As they sped through, another clung in the driver’s side door. Vincent leaned his head back revealing Brian, pointing his weapon straight at the creature and popped off a round. The blood of the creature sprayed on their faces as the bullet drove its way through its skull. They managed to get through the horde and into the urban area of the city. All of a sudden one of the wheels blew out from under the car. With the high speed and the loss of a wheel, Vincent began to lose control of the vehicle. They spun out of control, throwing of any of the creatures that had clung to the car, and slammed into a near by wall. The air bags deployed and cushioned them from the impact. Dazed only momentarily, Vincent immediately asked Sarah if she was alright. He dragged her and Brian out of the car and saw that the creatures were coming.
“Come on, get up! They’re coming for us!!!” Vincent yelled. Both Sarah and Brian got up and they ran towards on of the buildings. But the creatures ran faster. They had caught up to them almost instantly and the battle for their lives began.
Vincent and Brian unsheathed their sword and began to slash away at the oncoming onslaught. Sarah took aim with her pistols and shot round after round into the horde. As one charged at Sarah, Vincent ran to intercept. He deflected the swipe meant for Sarah and countered with an attack of his own. He quickly disposed of the threat and stayed there to defend Sarah from any other attackers. They hacked away at the horde but more seemed to take the place of every fallen creature. Knowing that they couldn’t keep their fight up much longer, Vincent saw alley that was behind them and thought of a plan.
“Maybe we can lose them in the allies!” Vincent shouted to his allies in battle. Without saying a word they began to move towards the alley. When Vincent and Sarah reached the entrance they saw that Brian was left behind. Brian desperately fought with all of his strength but fell to a slash to his back. Like a pack of ravenous piranha, all the creatures shifted their attention to Brian. Despite growing weak from his injuries, Brian continued to fight. Vincent Tried to go and help his fallen friend but Sarah was holding him back.
“There’s nothing you can do!!” She shouted. “He’s gone!!”
“NO!!!! BRIAN!!” Vincent screamed. He fell to his knees as he saw the horror that was unfolding before his eyes. Sarah picked him up and they ran in to the alley. Navigating through the labyrinth of tall buildings and allies, they ran as fast as they could. Turn after turn the sounds of the creatures growling began to die down. As they came across a door to an abandoned hospital building, Sarah stopped and they stood in front of the door of the back entrance of the old hospital building. She charged through the door and quickly closed it behind them. There they sat, in front of the door, waiting for the chilling growls to subside.
Vincent began to cry as he mourned the loss of his friend.
“Vincent, are you alright?” Sarah asked, but he gave no answer. “Vincent!!” she continued but she still received no answer. “Come on Vincent; don’t do this to me now! I need you!” She looked into his eyes, “You have to be strong…Vincent please…be strong for me…please…” She saw him come back to reality. He buried himself in her arms as he stopped crying.
“I’m sorry, my friend…”
Chapter 5: Transformations
Vincent lost his best friend and there was nothing he could have done to stop it. As he and Sarah sat there resting, all that ran through his head was the images of his friend, dying.
“We can’t stay here for long.” Vincent said. “We have to get to the higher floors. I don’t think they would search all the way up there.”
“Ok.” She said as they got up and proceeded up the stairs of the old, dilapidated section of the hospital. Each step that they ascended made a soft creak and would scare them, thinking that the stair well would collapse. They climbed five floors, and they decided that it was good enough. They settled in a room full of old oxygen tanks and other out dated medical equipment. Vincent was carrying a backpack full of ammunition and supplies. There was also a sleeping bag which he detached and unrolled on the floor. Though the sun didn’t shine threw the sky, they knew it was late and they were tired and decided to rest for the night. Vincent couldn’t help but shed one more tear for his fallen friend. Vincent stood near the window as Sarah slipped into the sleeping bag.
“Vincent.” She called. “We should be safe here right?”
“Yeah.”
“Then why don’t you come and sleep with me?”
“We can’t be too careful…”
“Please…”
“…Fine…” Vincent left his post and lied down next to her inside the bag. Vincent looked into her eyes and gave her a passionate kiss. She lifted her hand and ran it through his hair and rested it on his back. He gently grabbed the sides of her face as their kiss intensified. Despite the events that had led up to this moment, they continued to intensify their passion.
“Are you sure you want this?”
“Yes…I want to feel you…I mean…if we don’t survive…”
“If this will be the end, then we’ll at least have this moment of love…”
For that moment they were not in a hellish nightmare, or a ruined city. They were in a place where it was just them and nothing could hurt them. It was just them and their love.
As they lay there, sleeping in their bliss, another creature was about to enter their nightmare. Something awoke Vincent from his sleep and urged him to look outside the window. As he drew closer to it, an unearthly yell startled him. It was loud and full of anger. He knew it wasn’t human but it didn’t sound like any of the creatures that had attacked them before. He looked out the window and gasped at what he saw. There was a figure walking down the alley. It was definitely not human and not one of those creatures he had seen before. It was larger than the others. Unlike the previous creatures this was not elongated and slim. It looked like it retained more of a human figure, but was abnormally large. From where he was looking it seemed at least nine feet tall.
This new creature suddenly stopped walking, and looked around and then straight at Vincent in the window. Vincent’ eyes widened with fear. The creature surely saw him because it began to run, with great speed, towards the building were they were at. Vincent suddenly darted to Sarah.
“Sarah, wake up!” He pleaded. “Come on there’s something coming!” He said with great panic.
“What is it?” She asked while yawning.
“There’s something coming, so put your cloths on! Come on we have to leave now!” He said. As Sarah began to get dressed they heard a loud crash below them.
“Come on!!”
Vincent ran to check the holes in the floor and saw a large shadow walking around.
“Move it.” Vincent said as he led Sarah out the door on the side of the room.
“What about the bag?”
“Leave it!” They moved into the next room and saw that they were trapped. Vincent noticed a large hole, just big enough for them to fit through, in the ceiling.
“Get on my back and get up to that hole!” He told Sarah. She climbed on his back and reached for the hole. She got in and helped Vincent up. As they crawled through the narrow space they heard another crash followed by an even louder roar behind them. They looked back in horror and continued on. Suddenly a large arm crashed through the ceiling that Vincent was crawling on. The boards under him collapsed under his weight and he was barely was able to hang on.
“Vincent!!” Sarah shouted as she watched him dangle from the ceiling. “Come on you can make it up!!”
“No, I can’t…” he said as he struggled to hang on. “It only saw me! Go! RUN!! As Sarah struggled to leave Vincent lost his grip and dropped down into the room under him. The dust of the debris filled the air and Vincent could barely see in front of him. As the dust began to clear he could see the outline of the figure he saw out in the alley. Vincent took out his pistol and began to shoot at the large figure through the dusty air. The flash of the muzzle reflected off the dust as he shot into the creature. Suddenly the creature extended his arm and smacked the weapon from Vincent’ hand, sending it flying into the room where he was moments ago. It then grabbed Vincent by the neck and lifted him above his head.
Vincent saw its lifeless eyes starring at his own. They were different then the rest of the creatures. They seemed to have retained most of their former humanity except for the deep red all around the pupil. This creature was far beyond anything that he had faced.
It threw Vincent, and he went straight through the wall behind him. Dazed by the hard hit, Vincent Barely moved at all. His strength returned and he looked up at the hole that his body made in the wall. He could hear and see the faint outline of the behemoth slowly walking towards him. Vincent stood up as quickly as he could and sprinted out of the room. The creature picked up it’s pace to keep up with him. Vincent looked behind him and didn’t see the creature behind him and slowed down to a trot. Through the wall behind him, the arm of the creature crashed through it and grabbed Vincent. It pulled him through it and threw him, yet again, through another wall. Vincent quickly recovered and ran again. He reached a long corridor and as he got near the end of it, he stopped. Vincent turned around and saw the creature standing at the other end staring at him, growling.
The creature began to run at him and so did Vincent. Something came over him, and as he dodged the first swing by the beast, he countered, squeezed his fist and hit the thing with all of his might. The pain shot through Vincent’ arm and made him clench his fist in agony. He looked at the creature and saw that it was phased by the attack. The very sight gave him the will to push through. This could be the only chance he would get to escape the creature. He summoned his remaining strength and began to run away. He moved a few corridors down and took a few turns in the maze that was the hospital and found himself starring at the back of the creature. Vincent knew that if he were to escape, he would have to deal with the creature. At full speed, Vincent ran at the creature and dived, feet first, at it. He hit the legs of the creature behind its knees bringing it down. Then he jumped on the back of the creature and began to squeeze its neck. The creature, effortlessly, reached behind itself and gashed Vincent with its enormous claws.
Vincent was thrown into the room where he had left his backpack. This room contained many tanks of pressurized oxygen. A few moments later, the creature crashed through the door of the room to find Vincent standing behind a tank of oxygen being propped by a chair, holding his sword at the ready. Vincent struck the nozzle of the tank sending it flying into the stomach of the creature. It flew into the wall behind it and was restrained by the enormous pressure of the tank. Vincent drew his pistol and ran through the window of the room. He broke through the glass, turned in the air and fired at the tank holding the creature in place. The sparks of the ricocheting bullets ignited the oxygen escaping the tank. The explosion caused a chain reaction exploding the rest of the tanks in the room. The explosion had enough force to propel Vincent into through the air and into the building next to him.
He writhed in pain after he crashed through the window of the room he was in now. Despite the pain, he felt another feeling rush through his body. The feeling was familiar to him. It was the same cold feeling he had when he was in his class, before the nightmare started. The cold over came him just like it did before and consumed him. He tried to fight the feeling but it won and his mind drifted away from the world around him.
“I will fight this…for you…”
Chapter 6: Revelations
Vincent was once again in the familiar black world he was in after the nightmare started. As before he saw the figure in light far away from him, and began to drift towards her. Unlike before he felt something else there with him. A strange presence that he could not see, but he knew it was there. Regardless of his feelings Vincent knew that the woman had answers to his questions. Like before, when he reaches the woman, her back was turned to him. But something didn’t will him to reach for her this time. As he stretched his arm to touch her, she began to turn. She turned half way and Vincent saw that it was Sarah.
“Vincent…” her voice echoed in the darkness. “…run…” she continued in a cracked and desperate voice.
“From what Mel…” just as he was about to finish his sentence, A loud roar and rumbling came about the black world. Vincent looked all around him to see where this disturbance was coming from. Suddenly Vincent found himself on solid ground and the space around him, pulsated with eerie green. He turned around only to find a vast valley and a single figure in the distance. At first Vincent thought it to be the creature that he fought earlier but it was different in appearance. He stiffened with fear knowing that he could not fight against it in an open area.
“We have to run away!” Vincent told Sarah.
“No…” She responded. “…you must run away…and I must stay.”
“I can’t let you do this! I love you…” He shouted.
“Run, please! Save yourself.” She continued to plead. Vincent saw her desperate face and complied with her request. He looked at the creature and it was no more than a few yards away from them. Vincent ran away leaving Sarah behind to face the creature. After a few paces he stopped and looked back. The creature was almost next to Sarah. Vincent screamed as he ran towards her. He promised that he would save her. Sarah was about to be struck by the creature when Vincent jumped in the path of it’s attack. The force of the hit sent him flying back. Then the creature slowly walked over to him. Sarah tried to stop it but it just tossed her away like a rag doll. Vincent got up, and charged at the beast with all of his might. With each blow the creature landed Vincent felt something inside of him weakening. It wasn’t his strength, but more of something inside his body that was being drained after every blow. Like as if his spirit was being taken away from him by force. Just as he was about to give into his fatigue, something within him emerged and he looked at Sarah. A glowing aura emergerd form Vincent’ body. Beams of light began to shoot out of his body and pierced the creature’s body. The creature cried in agony as each beam pierced it. Then the creature fell and disappeared into the darkness that brought it.
They were finally alone and out of danger. Vincent turned to Sarah.
“What is this place?” He asked.
“You must go…fight for her…save her…love her” She said to him. Then the same force that had driven him out of this world earlier had taken him again and delivered him back to the world he belonged to.
Immediately after he awoke, he felt something lodged in his throat and he tried to cough it out. He coughed for several seconds until something flew from his mouth. He picked it up and wondered what it was. It was dark black and gelatinous. He felt around his mouth and discovered something hard and crusty on the side of it. It seemed to be stuck on him so he peeled it off. The substance seemed to be the same as the stuff that came out of his mouth except it hardened. He did not know what it was, but it gave him a terrible feeling after he touched it.
Suddenly Vincent remembered about his wound on his back and reached back. To his surprise, the gash didn’t feel fresh. It felt old and scared to him. It made him wonder how long he was lying there, but the fire across the building told him that he wasn’t there for long. He quickly let all of his questions go and only one thought invaded his mind.
“Sarah…”
He rushed out of the room.
After fleeing the hospital, Sarah had set out for the church a few blocks down. On a normal day it would have seemed nice to walk there, but now it was dangerous to even set foot outside of the alleyways. Sarah carefully set out her route to the cathedral so she would have to spend much time out in the open. She wondered if Vincent was alive, and if so, would she ever see him again? As she walked through obstacles in her way, trying not to make any noise, she couldn’t stop thinking about him. She got so deep in thought that, she took a wrong step and ran into a group of tin trashcans. It made a loud noise when she ran into them and worried that the monsters heard her. She got up and looked around, but no creatures were in sight. Maybe she got lucky. From where she was standing, the church doors were just a sprint away. But she knew that she could get closer before she would make her dash.
As she took her first step, a creature had fallen in front of her. She fell back in fright. Sarah drew the gun she had in her shoulder holster and fired at it. The bullets tore through the body of the creature and one went straight thru its head. It fell down and Sarah made her run to the Church. As she ran more and more of the creature appeared and began to chase her. She was almost to the doors, when the creatures completely surrounded her. She began to fire wildly into the horde, but there were so many that it didn’t make a difference. When her gun was empty she tried to reload it but a creature swiped it from her hand. They grew closer and Sarah thought that her life was over. She cringed in fright as one of the creature reached back and got ready to strike.
After a few moments, she heard a loud snap and opened her eyes. To her surprise, she saw Vincent holding the arm of the creature that was going to strike her. When she looked at him she felt something different about him. She felt it inside herself that he was different in some way.
He threw the arm of the creature, and almost instantly, he had punched the creature in the face. It flew back with so much force, and knocked down the creatures behind it. The Creatures then shifted their attention to Vincent. They began to attack him but he was faster and stronger than he was before. He easily overpowered them. The creatures could not lay a claw on him even though there were so many.
Vincent quickly got Sarah’s hand and picked her up. They ran towards the cathedral as Vincent defended from the attacks of those creatures. They managed to reach the cathedral doors, despite the overwhelming amount of creatures. Vincent quickly opened the door and went inside. There were two large hooks on the door and a larger block of wood next to it. As the creatures were trying to get in the church, Sarah grabbed the wood and put it on the door. Sarah was panting in exhaustion as she heard the creatures snarling and banging on the doors.
“Vincent!” She said as she leaned in to hug him.
“No!” He exclaimed. “Don’t touch me, please!”
“Why” She asked.
“Something has happened to me and I don’t know if it’s safe.” He responded with a sad look on his face.
Just then a voice echoed inside the large hall of the cathedral.
“Who are you?” The voice asked. It was not a very deep voice. It sounded like an old, high pitched mans voice. Vincent drew his gun and scanned the area but he couldn’t see anybody. Then a small old man emerged from the shadows.
“Who are you?” The old man asked again. As he looked at them, his eyes opened wide with a sense of surprise.
“Sarah…” He said with a relived smile. “You’re alive!”
“Do you know me?” She asked.
“I know you very well.” He said. “My blood has been following yours for many generations. My role has finally begun, but who are you?” He looked at Vincent. Where is Brian?”
“Brian?” Vincent asked. “What do you mean?”
“He was supposed to protect her from the minions until her mission was fulfilled.” The old man said.
“Brian is dead…”Vincent said as he looked down. “…Those damn monsters killed him”
“What?” The old man snapped. He looked around in confusion and said, “We are lost…all these years of waiting…for nothing.”
“I don’t know what is so important with Brian but I have been protecting Sarah…” Vincent said to the old man.
“You’re just a man, you’re nothing compared to Brain!” The old man interrupted him. “He is beyond anything you can ever hope to be! Only he can protect her and without him we’re all lost!” As soon as he finished his sentence, the minion horde crashed through the doors of the cathedral.
“Sarah!” yelled Vincent. “Take him somewhere safe and get as much information from him as possible!” As Sarah took him to top of the cathedral, Vincent began to repel the onslaught of minions that burst through the door. He fought the minions single handedly and they were no match for him and his newly acquired power. They slashed and tried to claw him, but couldn’t lay a finger on him.
The battle raged on for a couple of minutes but it seemed like seconds, when the minions suddenly stopped. They looked around as if though they sensed something wrong. They snarled and ran out of the cathedral in a hurry. Vincent felt something odd within him but didn’t know what it was. He just shrugged it off and called to Sarah.
“We’re okay!” She yelled in response from the top if the cathedral.
“Come on down here!” he said. As they both were coming down the stairs Vincent noticed the old man holding a sword in his hands. Then the old man and Sarah came before him. “What happens if someone is injured by these creatures and doesn’t die?” Vincent asked the old man.
“Well, I was not aware that one can survive an encounter with a minion.” He said. “But I’ve heard legends that when a person lives through a fight, then they are doomed to become a one. Also there are others that say that they become an ultimate being of destruction. I for one have not yet seen it and don’t believe it” Vincent looked down and pondered.
“What are they?” Vincent asked.
“They are the minions of the dark lord.” As soon as he finished Vincent felt something strange run through his body. A feeling that he couldn’t describe but knew what it meant…danger was coming.
“Run.” He said. “RUN!” Then something crashed through the stained glass window on the roof of the cathedral. Glassed came down like rain and Vincent grabbed Sarah and fell to the ground. He shielded her from the falling shards of glass. The creature looked at them and stabbed the old man through the chest and he threw the sword that he was holding in agony. The sound was excruciating to hear as the blood splattered all over the floor. It lifted the old man and the creature threw him away like a rag doll. His lifeless body slid across the floor making a trail from the blood gushing out of the hole in his chest.
“Sarah, run away.” He said to her. “See if the old man has anything more for us!” Sarah nodded her head and got up from under him. Vincent shifted his attention to the creature as Sarah ran the old man.
“Good, I’ve been waiting for round two!” He said to the creature. The creature looked at him and his eyes seemed to have pierced right through him.
“Confident, aren’t you.” It spoke. The voice sounded like it was two voices speaking together. One, which sounded human and the other, was dark and evil.
“So, it talks.” Vincent said with a smirk.
“Yes, it does. And back with the strength of your undoing.” It responded
“Well now, I guess we’ll see who’s better.” Vincent said as he tightened his fists.
“I was always better than you, Vincent.”
Vincent’ eyes widened. “Brian…”
“Yes, how quickly you forget your friends.”
“No…no, I wanted to go back for you, but you were already gone.”
“I was gone…but now…I am something far greater than you ever will be!” The creature that was once Brian said to Vincent. “I have been reborn and given these incredible powers! I was just angry before; my hatred for you was all of the humanity I had left within me. When I found you, I had to kill you.” It said as they began to circle each other. “Then, I smelled the stink of you…and her!! My rage exploded!! I loved her with all of my being, and she chose you. My defeat before gave me the quiet I needed for my mind to grasp its new power.” Then they both stopped and faced one another. “Now my mind is focused and you ARE DEAD!!”
Brian charged at him and began a flurry of attacks. Vincent dodged some but as they became faster he rolled away. Vincent looked for an opening and he moved under Brian’s attack to strike him in the chest. Brian moved back and held the area where Vincent had just hit.
“That…that actually hurt.” Brian said in disbelief. “Where did you gain such strength?”
“It was a gift…” Vincent responded. “…From an old friend!” Vincent quickly used this chance and took the offensive. He hit Brian a few more times but it didn’t seem to hurt him much. Vincent jumped in the air, spun and kicked Brian in the face. Vincent landed and just looked at Brian as he turned and grabbed his face with one hand. It held him up in the air, then thrust his face into the wall beside him. The creature twisted his hand grinding Vincent’ face deeper into the stone. It released him and Vincent fell on the ground. Quickly recovering his strength, Vincent dodged a blow that Brian delivered and hit Brian in his face. After the hit Vincent grabbed the back of it, jumped and hit it again with his knee. Brian backed away clutching his face in pain.
“Well…” Vincent said. “…You felt that one.”
Brain looked up and his anger exploded. He grabbed Vincent by the head and slammed him into the ground. The behemoth then picked him up and threw him through one of the pillars supporting the cathedral. Seeing no movement, Brian had turned his attention to finding Sarah.
“Hey!” Vincent said in exhaustion as he climbed out of the ruble burying him. “We haven’t finished our dance yet.”
“…Impressive” Brian said. Vincent got up only to see Brian running at him at full speed. His attention was drawn to the sword lying on the ground next to him.
“It’s that sword the old man was holding.” Vincent said as he picked up the sword. When he held it up to his face, two small claws that were clamped to the scabbard released. He drew he sword and felt as if a great power had been released. For a split second, the time around Vincent had seemed to stop. Vincent looked up only to find that Brian’s arm was just inches away from his face. He jumped out of the way and the world had returned to normal. The blade sliced its way through Brian’s putrid flesh. When the blade cleared Brian’s back, a trail of red could be seen connecting it to his back. Vincent spun and used his momentum to power another slash across Brian’s back.
The creature let out a cry of pain. He turned and slapped Vincent away into a far wall with the momentum of his arm. The pain was so unbearable to Brain that he crashed through the cathedral wall and ran away. Vincent was sitting on one of the walls trying to catch his breath. He knew the fight was over and he released the sword from his hand. It made a loud bang as it hit the ground and it echoed through out the cathedral. Exhausted from the intense battle, Vincent laid back even more on the wall. Sarah came to Vincent in tears. She held him close; Vincent winced in pain as she picked him up
“Are you ok?” She asked him.
“Just peachy…” Vincent said with a smile. She smiled back at him and she helped him up the stairs to the room above the cathedral.
“I can save her, but can I save myself…”
Chapter 7: Prophecy Fulfilled
“Did he tell you anything Sarah?” Vincent asked Sarah.
“Yeah, he did.” She responded as she looked down. They were in the room above the cathedral. There was a stained glass window but there dark sky didn’t allow much light. Their only light came from the candles on the altar on the far end of the room.
“He said that there was an ancient prophecy about a great evil entity. It had come to this world before but two humans had stopped it. The old man said that we have to travel to the center of the city to find this evil. One used their life force to unleash the ultimate attack, and the other protected him until his role was complete. Now we have to do the same.”
“What?” Vincent asked.
“You have to protect me…and when the time comes…let me go…”
“No! I won’t.”
“You have to… I have to…”
“No…I won’t let it.” Vincent said as he leaned in and hugged her, and she hugged him back. “I’ll save you…” Vincent whispered into her ear. She looked into his eyes and kissed him. Sarah eased him down because he was beginning to collapse in her arms from exhaustion. She laid him down on the ground and put a cloth from the altar under his head. Then she lied next to him and fell asleep.
At dawn, the faint light of the dimmed sun came through the window and colored the room. Sarah awoke only to find Vincent standing at the window looking out.
“You’re awake.” He said as he turned to her.
“Yeah, what time did you wake up?” She asked him
“About a couple of hours ago…I couldn’t sleep for long.” He responded.
“Are you ok?” She asked him.
“I don’t know…” He responded. “If what he said was true then when will it change me? When will I become like…Brian?”
“You are nothing like him Vincent!” She told him. “I know you won’t let it win.” She started to get up and noticed that the cloth she put under Vincent was under her head. She got up and walked to Vincent, wrapped her arms around him and rested her head on his shoulder.
“I know you won’t turn into a monster.” She whispered into his ear.
“Sarah…” Vincent said. “I will promise you…I will not become like Brian…and I will save you.” She looked at him but did not say a word. They collected what equipment they had left and left the church. As they looked up they saw the sun trying to pierce the odd veil around the city. The light was faint but it was brighter than it was at night. They quickly gathered their thoughts and started for the center of the city, City Hall.
As they neared City Hall, they could see odd shapes coming over the horizon. They grew nearer and discovered the building had been replaced by a large, eerie looking tower. There were gargoyles posted on the pillars around the tower. Vincent and Sarah felt an evil chill as they approached the front doors. There were two doors about twenty feet tall and seven feet wide. But there was no door knob on them. Sarah and Vincent looked all around for a way to open them, but they couldn’t find anything. Vincent put his hand on the door and both doors mysteriously opened. Inside was something that looked like a mansions foyer. They both entered and the doors shut hard behind them. With the doors shut, all the light in the room had vanished. Vincent and Sarah were now trapped in darkness.
“Don’t move.” Vincent commanded Sarah.
“Okay.” She responded. In the darkness, they both looked around hoping to find any kind of light. They waited patiently for several second when two red dots appeared in front of them.
“Look.” Sarah whispered to Vincent. “What is that?” Vincent turned and saw them.
“I don’t know.” Said Vincent. Then more and more dots started to appear all around them. Vincent and Sarah’s hearts began to race as they started to realize what they were. A light from the top began to light the room. Little by little elongated figures began to emerge from the darkness. The room became dimly lit. Vincent and Sarah discovered that they were no longer in the main room but in stone corridor surrounded by minions. Sarah brought up her pistols and Vincent drew his sword ready to fight for their lives. The minions began to spread apart and revealed a door behind them.
As both of them approached the door, it began to open. The door revealed a throne room behind it and a man sitting down at the far end.
“Come.” The man said in a very low and dark voice. Vincent and Sarah began to walk slowly towards him. As the got closer they started to see more of a man’s features. His hair was short black. The face was pale and the eyes were grey. The man stood up as Vincent and Sarah approached him. He towered over both of them.
“Who are you?” Asked Vincent.
“I am the dark lord, Galamoth.” The tall figure said and then turned to Sarah. “I see you haven’t fully realized your true power. I may live after.”
“Like hell you will!” Vincent snapped as he drew his sword.
“Pathetic human…” He said. “She is the only who can fight me and stand a chance. But you are just a man, and you cannot defeat me.” Galamoth said with smug face.
“I’ll show you!” Vincent slashed several times but Galamoth effortlessly dodged each and every strike. Then with every once of his strength, Vincent made one final slash. Galamoth raised his arm and the sword struck it. The sword shattered into hundreds of pieces while Vincent held the handle with the base of the sword still on it. Suddenly Galamoth’s arm almost instantly grabbed Vincent’ throat picked him up and Vincent dropped the handle of the broken sword. Sarah rushed to Vincent’ aid but Galamoth quickly threw her away.
“I’ll deal with you, after I finish with this one.” Galamoth said with a smile. Then Vincent hit Galamoth on the sides of his head with all his might and kicked himself off his chest. As soon as Vincent planted his feet on the ground Galamoth rushed and hit him in his chest knocking the air out of Vincent. Vincent flew several yards and laid on his side struggling to force air back into his lungs. Galamoth slowly began to walk to Vincent. Vincent saw Sarah’s body lying on the floor, not moving. Something within Vincent exploded. He got up and quickly punched Galamoth in his stomach. Galamoth bent over from the mighty blow and pain surged through Vincent’ hand. He began a series of attacks and landed every single blow. Then he grabbed Galamoth’s head and threw him into the throne he once sat in. Vincent screamed in agony as the pain had finally had caught up to him and then fell to his knees.
With no time to recuperate, he rushed to Sarah.
“Sarah, are you okay?” He said.
“Yeah.” Sarah responded as she began to rise from the floor. “Where’s Galamoth?”
“On his throne.” Vincent said with a smirk.
“You beat him?” Sarah asked.
“I think I heard a snap when I threw him. So I would say he’s dead.” Vincent responded.
“Then I think we should get out of here.” Sarah said to Vincent.
“Okay.”
“It will take a lot more than that to defeat me!” The dark voice said from the rubble of the throne.
“No…”
Galamoth rose from the rubble and looked at Vincent.
“I am impressed by your strength Vincent. I see you have received my gift.” He said as he dusted himself off. “But like I said you cannot…you cannot win.” Just as he said that the room began to fade away and was replaced by a strange space. The space was massive and the surrounding pulsated an eerie green.
“Welcome to your oblivion.”
Galamoth rushed them and struck both of them almost at the same time knocking Vincent and Sarah back. Before they even touched the ground Galamoth had punched Vincent into the ground. Blood flew from Vincent’ mouth as he hit the ground. Vincent got up and began a wild flurry of attacks. Landing some and missing a lot others, Vincent knew that he was out of his league.
“Well you seem to be doing a lot better than I expected.” Galamoth said.
“I’m just full of surprises!!” Vincent yelled.
Sarah got up from the ground and recovered from her daze and saw Vincent battling for their lives. Every blow that Vincent took made Sarah wince in pain. She felt something inside of her boil and her body began to tremble. All the feelings that she had kept inside, her despair, her sorrow, her love all of a sudden took a hold of her mind.
Vincent valiantly fought against Galamoth, but he knew that he was not going to survive this fight. He gave one final strike to Galamoth’s body with the very last once of strength in his body. The hit was not enough though to beat the evil creature. Galamoth quickly recovered and slapped Vincent several yards away. Vincent tried to get up from the mighty blow, but didn’t have the strength to do it. Galamoth saw that Vincent had no more fight in him and slowly walked over to him.
“You have a lot of spirit kid, I’ll give you that.” Galamoth said as he turned Vincent over with his foot. “I’ve fought many humans and heroes before but none have been quite like you. I’ll tell you the truth. It’s a shame that you’re going to die here. I wish that you would join me. I would give you so much, but in the end I know that you won’t. That’s why I won’t even bother.” Galamoth stopped and extended his hand over Vincent’ body. An orb of purple light gathered on the palm of Galamoth’s hand.
“Farewell…”
All of a sudden an orb of white spark flashed on Galamoth’s face. He was knocked back with great force and the orb shot out of his hand. The orb flew so fast and exploded and the flash was almost blinding. When the white faded away, Galamoth saw Sarah standing with a strange aura of white around her. It was fluid and almost translucent but yet was still visible. She began to walk toward Galamoth. The vile creature rushed to strike Sarah but every punch he threw the shield of light would appear and stop it. Light gathered where Galamoth’s fist was and exploded sending him flying back.
Small orbs of light began to emerge from Sarah’s body and shot with amazing speed to Galamoth. With every hit the streaks of white would explode and knocked him back. Every explosion on his body made him weaker and weaker until his body was unable to move.
Suddenly a circle of light, with intricate designs, appeared under Sarah. Slowly it began to spin. As it spun faster, a sort of mist come out of Sarah and collected above her head. It formed into an orb that grew with each passing second. Rays of light shot out from the sphere above Sarah’s head as it grew larger and larger. It seemed almost fluid, like water flowing in a cup.
Galamoth knew exactly what the orb above Sarah’s head was. Her life force was collecting above her, preparing for the final attack.
“NO!!!”
Vincent appeared above Sarah with the handle of the sword in his hand. He came flew down and planted his feet on Galamoth’s chest. The force of the blow knocked Galamoth over. While Vincent was still on his chest and before Galamoth fell, he slashed it numerous times. A pain which Galamoth had never felt before surged through his body. When they finally fell to the ground, Vincent raised what was left of his sword and impaled Galamoth’s chest.
Galamoth screamed in agony and blue blood gushed through the sides of the side of the broken blade. Suddenly a massive pillar of light shot out from Galamoth’s body and ascended through the tower. Light radiated as the pillar of light traveled through the tower. The light was almost blinding to Vincent and Sarah. Then it slowly dissipated into nothing, and Galamoth’s body was gone. Vincent’ body collapsed. His strength along with is life was fading fast. Vincent looked at Sarah, alive, and he knew the battle was finally over.
“I saved…”
Chapter 8: Victory?
Sarah rushed to Vincent’ limber body on he ground. “Vincent…? Come one Vincent look at me!” Vincent slowly opened his eyes.
“Mel… Is he dead?” Vincent asked
“Yes.” Sarah responded. “Now come on, we have to get out of here.”
“I’m not going anywhere. I know that… You know that.”
“No please Vincent...”
“This is where it ends”
“…I need you, please”
“I’m sorry…”
Vincent took on final breath and the he was gone, even though Sarah held him so tight in her arms. She began to weep. Sarah’s tears ran down Vincent’ lifeless face.
“I…Love you…”
As she cried, the aura that had surrounded her body returned.
“I love you…”
The aura grew larger and larger with each second.
“I love you…”
The aura began to flow from her onto Vincent’ body and began to collect on his chest.
“I love you!”
The aura grew so bright and exploded into a flash of white light. Vincent gasped for air as life returned to his body.
“Vincent…Are you…”
“Thank you…”
Vincent embraced Sarah in his arms
“I love you…”
“Sarah, we have to get out of the city fast.” Vincent said.
“Why?” She asked
“The government is planning to launch something at the city.”
“What!?!” Sarah exclaimed.
“There is military base not to far from here, there some special forces guys are preparing to leave in a helicopter. We can get there faster if we take South Street all the way down and…”
“How do you know all this?” Sarah interrupted.
“…I… I don’t know…” Vincent responded. Vincent grabbed Sarah’s hand and they ran off. Sarah and Vincent ran down the street next to the tower and noticed that the veil that engulfed the city was no longer above them. They continued running for a while and Sarah was beginning to slow down.
“Come on Sarah, we have to hurry.”
“I can’t…I’m really tired…” Sarah responded gasping for air.
“Get on my back.” He commanded her. Sarah climbed on Vincent’ back and Vincent ran with incredible speed. Sarah saw the buildings fly by her as Vincent sped down the street. Vincent arrived at the military base in no time, but he felt something wrong. The buildings were on fire and destroyed.
“Was everything supposed to be like this?” Sarah asked as she turned to Vincent
“No, it was fine when I saw it.” Vincent said. “It shouldn’t be like this.” They both went into the main building of the base. Inside they saw fresh bodies of soldiers in camouflage.
“This can’t be…There was more of them…” Vincent said.
“Maybe minions got to them.”
“No, the minions died along with their master. They couldn’t have done this.” Vincent explained. Suddenly in they heard static cracking at far end of the room. They followed the sound to a walkie-talkie in a soldier’s hand.
“Bra… te… c… in.” The voice from the radio asked over heavy static. “Bravo…co…in.” The voice repeated.
Vincent picked up the radio and adjusted the frequency and pressed the button on the side. “This is a civilian, Bravo has been killed.” Vincent spoke into the radio
“Who is this?” The voice asked clearly.
“My name is Vincent and I have a survivor with me.” Vincent responded.
“Survivors…? Well, my name is Sergeant Wilkins. Vincent, do you think you and the other survivor can make it to the courtyard of the old gospel cathedral seven miles away in an hour?
“Yeah, we can make it in less than that.” Vincent said.
“Ok Vincent. We can only give you an hour so you two will have to hurry. Over and out.”
Vincent looked at Sarah then looked around. “Sarah, get that belt with grenade rounds in it.” Vincent commanded Sarah. She went to where Vincent was pointing at and picked up a strap with, what looked like, four large bullets while Vincent searched for the grenade launcher. He picked up the grenade launcher as Sarah brought the belt of grenades rounds to him. “Ok, let’s go.” Vincent told Sarah. They both left the base and hurried to the church.
Vincent once again picked Sarah up on his back and ran with amazing speed. While Vincent was running, he could feel an odd feeling within him. He took a turn into an alley in between two large apartment buildings. He stopped halfway and let Sarah off his back.
“What’s wrong Vincent?” Sarah asked. Vincent broke the barrel of the launcher, fed a grenade round into the weapon, and closed the barrel. Suddenly Vincent pushed Sarah into the ground and Vincent threw himself back. A large creature landed in between where Vincent and Sarah were before. The creature swatted Vincent’ hand and caused him to fire the grenade. Almost instantly the explosion destroyed a large chunk of the building next to them. Vincent Looked up and saw debris falling and the creature walking towards him.
Vincent tried to load the next round into the grenade launcher but the creature slapped the weapon out of his hand and picked him up by his neck. Vincent stared into the creature’s eyes and realized that it was Brian. Vincent smacked the sides of Brian’s head, and Brian dropped him. As soon as his feet hit the ground, Vincent jumped up hit Brian in the face twice and kicked him. Brian flew back through the wall behind him.
Vincent immediately went to Sarah.
“Are you ok?” He asked her
“Yeah…I’m fine.” She responded.
“Sarah you have to run and get to that church.”
“No! I won’t leave you!” She protested.
“I won’t be long, I’ll be right behind you.” He said. He cradled her head in his hand and kissed her. “Go…”
“Ok.” Sarah got up and ran in the direction of the church.
“Brian! Where are you!?!” Vincent yelled into the air. Brian crashed through the wall in front of Vincent. With great speed, Brian picked up Vincent and rammed him into the wall behind him. Brian grinded Vincent head into the brick and threw him onto the ground.
“Vincent.” Brain spoke. “I guess you deserve to know what I am now, before I kill you.” Vincent looked up attempted to get up. “First, let me educate you in the natural power of evil. The natural power of evil is a never ending cycle that passes from one entity to the next.” Vincent got up and rushed Brian. Brian dodged all of Vincent’ attacks and grabbed his arms. “The reason Sarah was supposed to destroy Galamoth was because her life energy seals away the evil power.” Brian said as he held Vincent in the air. Suddenly Brian threw Vincent through the wall next to them. “Since Galamoth died by your hand, his power became free and found another “host” if you will.” Brian said as he walked towards Vincent. “I should thank for giving me my new grand power.”
Vincent grabbed a large chunk of brick and smashed it on Brians face, causing him to stumble back. Vincent leapt up and ran past the disorientated Brain. Vincent looked up and saw the fire escape ladder down enough for him to reach it. He ran up the wall and used it to propel him to reach the ladder. With amazing speed Vincent climbed the ladder to the next floor. When he reached the platform, Vincent felt something pass behind him. Vincent looked back and saw Brian in the air ready to attack. Vincent dodged the attack and began to run up the stairs of the fire escape. Brain effortlessly jumped from floor to floor, right behind Vincent. Nine floors later, both of them had reached the roof.
“No where else to run Vincent!” Brian shouted to Vincent
“I’m not running anymore…” Vincent had said as he turned to face Brain.
“It is a shame you’re going to die here. You could be great.” Brian said. Without saying a word, Vincent charged Brian. In one swift movement, Brian deflected Vincent’ attack and grabbed his throat. Brian picked Vincent up and hung him over the edge of the edge of the roof.
“I guess I was better after all.” Brain said. “At this height, even you your body’s new powers cannot save you. You will die Vincent. Then I will go to the church and kill Sarah to. I’m going to tear her heart from her chest and watch it stop beating in my hand!” In an act of desperation, Vincent pulled out a small pistol from his ankle holster and shoot Brian in the face. Brian screamed in pain and let go of Vincent’ neck. As Vincent was falling, he tried to grab onto something to slow his fall. Vincent grabbed rails from the fire escape stairs, but was falling to fast to get a good grip. Vincent hit the ground and blood gushed from his mouth.
“What a pathetic waste.” Brain said as he walked over Vincent’ lifeless body. Without wasting anytime, Brain walked away to find and kill Sarah.
“………”
Final Chapter: The Nightmare Devil
“Hey!” Sarah shouted. “Wait.” Sarah had reached the courtyard of the church and saw the soldiers loading up the two helicopters. She was out of breath and exhausted from the run.
“Hey guys…a survivor!” One of the soldiers called to the others. The soldiers immediately ran to help Sarah.
“Are you ok, Miss?” Another soldier asked Sarah.
“Fine…” Sarah said
“What about the survivor?” A familiar voice asked her.
“Wilkins?” She asked.
“My name is Sergeant Wilkins Miss, now what about the other survivor?” Wilkins asked her again
“Vincent is coming, I know he will.” Sarah whispered.
“Miss, we can’t stay here for long. A missile is coming here and we have to get out.” Wilkins informed Sarah.
“He’ll be here! We can’t leave him her!” Sarah pleaded.
“He has fifteen minutes. No more.” Wilkins told Sarah.
“Thank You…”
Sarah rested in the helicopter for a few minutes and began to help the soldiers load the rest of the equipment into the helicopters.
“Hey there’s someone coming!” One soldier yells. Lightning flashes and thunder cracks as Sarah runs to meet Vincent. She waits at the opening of the courtyard and sees the shadowy figure drawing near. But the figure only gets larger and larger.
“No…”
“Start the engines!” Sarah shouts. “We have to get out of here right now!” The soldiers look at the figure and see that it’s not human. The soldiers scramble to start the engines of the helicopters but could not get them started on time. The creature entered the courtyard and began to walk toward the helicopters. Sarah tried to summon her powers, but was unsuccessful.
The rain began to pour down on them and Sarah knew that it was the end. She looked down and waited for her death.
“HEY! BRIAN!! I’m not finished with you yet.”
Sarah looked up and saw the creature turn around. She could see Vincent standing at the entrance of the courtyard aiming the grenade launcher at Brian.
Vincent pulled the trigger of the grenade launcher and the round popped. With only a small delay the grenade exploded on Brain’s body sending fragments of his flesh in every direction. The Explosion created aa massive shockwave and it sent Sarah to the ground. Vincent quickly ran to Sarah.
“Hey, are you okay?” Vincent asked Sarah.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” She said in a soft voice. “I thought you weren’t coming back.”
“I said I was coming for you, right?” Vincent said with a smile. Sarah smiled back at Vincent. “Come on you have to go.”
“What do you mean?” Sarah asked him
“That wasn’t nearly enough to kill Brian. I have to stop him.”
“But there’s a missile coming, which should kill him!”
“What if it doesn’t? I have to make sure that he doesn’t live past today.” Vincent picked up Sarah in his arms and carried her to the helicopter. She pleaded with him to escape but Vincent knew what he had to do. He placed her on the platform inside the helicopter and gave her a final kiss goodbye
“I love you…”
“Sergeant, please watch out for her. She can be really slick when she wants to.” Vincent told Wilkins. “Under no circumstances is she to leave this helicopter while that creature is still alive.
“Understood Vincent, I’ll keep an eye on her.” Wilkins reassured Vincent. Vincent closed the door to the helicopter and broke the handle with his hand. The helicopter’s engines roared as they took off for the sky.
On the ground, Vincent turned and faced Brian. Brian was recovering from the injuries he sustained from the grenade. Before Brian could say anything Vincent rushed him and began his offensive. Many hit connected but they had very little effect on Brian. Brian jumped up and thrust his arm at Vincent. Vincent jumped back, barely dodging the attack. Brian’s arm drove its way deep into the ground that Vincent had stood on moments before. As soon as Vincent’ feet touched the ground, he shot towards Brian. Vincent punched Brains face and kicked him with all of his might. Brian flew back many yards from the power of Vincent’ mighty blow.
Brain began to laugh as he got up from the ground. “Did you really think that you actually have the power to defeat a god, Vincent?” Brian said in a smug voice. Vincent looked at Brian closely. Brian wasn’t even tired, and Vincent was starting to give into fatigue. Brian rushed Vincent and struck him numerous times. Vincent couldn’t defend himself and was being pummeled into a bloody pulp. Brian effortlessly wore down Vincent until he could not even move.
“Now you will finally die Vincent.” Brain said to Vincent as he picked him up by the neck.
Suddenly, a hail of bullets tore their way through Brian’s body and the pain made him let go of Vincent. Without hesitation, Vincent kicked himself off Brain and landed safely away from stray bullets. When Vincent looked up he saw a helicopter hovering in the air, firing its chain guns at Brian.
“No…” Vincent said very weakly. “Get out of here…” Vincent signaled with his arms for the helicopter to leave. “Please go…” Vincent said his final plea as he collapsed from fatigue. In the back of his mind, he could hear the barrage of gun fire from the helicopter. For several seconds that was all he could hear. Then suddenly, he heard a loud pop. Vincent knew what made that sound. When he looked up he saw Brain aiming the smoking grenade launcher to the sky. Vincent saw the helicopter come crashing down behind Brian. The explosion produced a strong gust of wind and Vincent looked down.
Brian lay on the ground recovering from his wounds. Vincent summoned the strength to get up and ran to the wreckage. As he stood before the destroyed helicopter, Vincent could only think that Sarah was in it. Tears began to roll down his eyes and he clenched his fists tight. He drooped down to his knees and screamed into the air.
Vincent’ eyes glowed red and his screamed began to change into a roar. A fire began to burn under Vincent’ and body and it burnt of his clothing. Vincent’ body began into the monster he hated so much. His body grew in size and changed in color. The nails on his fingers turned into claws and teeth, into fangs. Vincent rose from the ground and as he roared the fire under him blazed, then subsided.
Brain had overseen the transformation with a grin. Vincent roared and charged at Brian. Filled with rage, Vincent attacked Brian and slashed at his head. The force of the blow sent Brian flying several yards back. As soon as Brian looked up, he saw Vincent running at him with his next attack. Brian jumped from the ground just before Vincent’ hand drove its way through the ground were Brian’s head was moments before. Vincent instantly sprang towards Brian and swiped twice while they were moving back. Brian barely dodged the attacks and kicked Vincent in the face. Vincent roared and charged again.
“Yes!” Brian said as if he was happy. “This was the way I wanted it to be Vincent!” Brian exclaimed as the both fought. “Now that you are at your strongest, I can finally kill you and not have any regrets.” Vincent continuously slashed at Brian but only managed to hit him a few times. Brian hit Vincent on his shoulders, grabbed him and threw Vincent into the wall behind them. Just like Galamoth, an orb of energy gathered in Brian’s palm and he through it at Vincent.
The orb created a massive explosion that surely killed Vincent. Brian looked at the burning ruble and smiled in victory. He turned around and began to walk away. Suddenly, Brian heard a roar coming from behind. He turned and saw Vincent slowly emerge from the fire and he growled.
Brian was amazed by what he saw. Energy collected at Brian’s hand again and he released it and the ball of energy went flying to Vincent. The energy ball exploded, but had little effect on Vincent. Brian launched multiple energy balls but none of them stopped Vincent. He walked through each one unharmed.
Vincent continued his onslaught on Brian, but Brian was not showing any signs of fatigue. Vincent punched Brian in the stomach and hit him on the head. The force of the blow sent Brian soaring back. Quickly recovering from the hit, Brian returned his own attack and grounded Vincent. The black blood dripped from their wounds onto the floor. Without warning, Vincent punched Brian’s face and Brian flew back.
Vincent heard the engine of a helicopter above his head and he looked up. He could see Sarah, scared, in the helicopter. Then the helicopter descended on the courtyard. Sarah exited the helicopter and stood sadly. Vincent rushed Sarah and picked her up by the neck and slammed her on the door.
“Vincent…you…promised…”
“S A R A H…”
Vincent’ eyes widened and he dropped Sarah from his grasp. She stayed on her knees and gasped for air. He looked at his hands and began to panic. Inside his mind he could hear the promise that he made to Sarah. He heard the promise that he broke.
Vincent’ body began to float in the air and rays of light shot out from it. Then an orb of light surrounded his body and enveloped it. The ball pulsated for a moment then began to brighten. The sound began to build inside the orb and then exploded in an intense bright light and was almost soundless.
The explosion had created a crater and a human Vincent stood in the center. Sparks of light rose from the center of the crater and disappeared into the air. Vincent stood there with his eyes closed like a statue. He opened his eyes and slowly began walking out of the crater and towards Sarah.
Brian screamed, in a rage, and rushed Vincent. As Brian was about to strike, Vincent ducked below his attack and punched Brian in the stomach. Brian hunched over in pain and Vincent suddenly struck him in the back, grounding Brian. After the devastating attack, Vincent continued to walk slowly towards Sarah.
“I’m sorry for hurting you.” Vincent told Sarah as he arrived at her side
“You don’t have to be. I know you didn’t mean it.” Sarah said to Vincent as she placed her hands on his face.
“VINCENT!!” Brian yelled from the distance. He was holding his stomach as he got up from the floor.
“We haven’t finished yet!” Brian yelled
Vincent Held out his hand and an orb of bright light gathered above it.
“What is that?” Brian asked.
“The instrument of you death, Brian.” Vincent grabbed the ball of light and closed his hand tight.
“Farewell…my old friend.” Vincent threw the orb and it flew with incredible speed to Brian. The ball hit Brian and was drawn inside of him. Rays shot out from Brain and he screamed in agony. Then Brian exploded in a bright light and he was no more.
“Vincent, you did it! But we don’t have much time, the missile will be here any moment!”
“I’m sorry Sarah, but I can’t go with you.
“What!?!”
“I’m not apart of your world anymore, I’m something else.”
“But that’s okay Vincent…we can still be happy!”
“No. If I live then we will never be happy.”
“Please…I can’t live without you.”
“You will. As long as you remember me, then I will always be with you.”
Vincent embraced Sarah in his arms and gave her a final kiss goodbye. He picked her up and placed her in the helicopter and it slowly climbed into the air. The helicopter flew away and stopped at a safe distance away from the city. She looked back and saw a bright light in the distant sky.
Vincent stood silently in the shattered courtyard and looked at the helicopter flying off into the distance.
“I love you.”
“Vincent.” A familiar voice called from behind him. Vincent looked back and saw a human Brian walking towards him. “Thanks for saving me and Sarah.”
“You don’t have to thank me. You would have done the same, and you know it.”
“I don’t think I could have loved her as much as you do.”
“I know you do.”
“So what’s going to happen now?” Brian asked Vincent.
“Peace…”
The missile shot down into the city and engulfed it with a great mushroom cloud. Sarah looked back and began to weep. After losing a love and a friend, a life and a future, her nightmare ended.
