Rex and Ruby finshed
Part one
Ten reasons orphans have it good
Ruby red, mother, vampire and habitual chain-smoker woke in her bed of red velvet and black silk.
She reached over to her nightstand for one of the 10 packs of smokes she had bought last night.
Her questing hand found nothingness.
Clad only in her filmy night-gown, red hair swinging and violet eyes blazing, she stomped out to confront her partner in crime, Rex G, about her distinct lack of nicotine.
Rex!! She bellowed, “Where did you put it?”
Rex looked up at her and tried to look innocent.
It went down like a lead balloon.
“Where is what” He asked “My smokes!!” Ruby yelled.
Rex brushed some invisible lint from his sharp Armani suit.
“I put them down the garbage disposal” “You know smoke fucks up Armani.” Ruby wailed as if Rex had eaten her child raw for breakfast.
She made a mad dash for the sink and stuck her hand down it. “There must be some left!!” Rex just watched her and smirked. “I told you I would one of these days.” Ruby strode out of the room. She picked up the phone all
ready to call her local smoke shop. She had made a deal with them so they would deliver to her whenever she needed it.
She had told them she had a rare condition and could not come out in the day. They didn’t care. This was the city they had heard odder things.
Also she was putting the kids through collage with all the money she spent on cigarettes …….all five of them.
Just as she was about to dial the phone rang in her hand.
She looked at it as if it was a snake.
It rang again.
She answered it.
“Hello” “Aunt Karen” The shock in her voice was thicker then mud.
‘Come visit?”
“When you threw me out I was happy you where happy everyone was happy.... most of all the cats.”
“And the place is a mess and I just can’t….”
“What !” ?A day!!?
Rex had been watching all this and laughing himself sick.
“Your aunt is coming to visit and she don’t know you’re a
vampire.” he said in a sing-song voice while dancing around her and pointing.
Ruby went to slap him. However the bell saved him as the phone rang again.
Rex picked it up. “Hello?” “Nora? “ “Come to what?”
“No what?!” “Oh, god mommy don’t hang up the phone!!”
Ruby just grinned at Rex.
“Should I double the order?”
“Triple it” he said as he went off to his room. and added as an afterthought “Have them send some beer too.”
Ruby walked into Rex’s room. “We need to address the bodies
issue.” She said as wrinkled her nose looking at the parts all over Rex’s room.
Rex just looked up from his comic book. “Bodies?” He asked puzzled
“What bodies?” Ruby shook her head and muttered something about semantics. Rex waved a hand to take it all. “Freezer.” “Tom and Ron’s no-tell-toxic waste dump.” “Us chemically dependant for as long as the old ladies are here.”
“All good.” “Are you sure you are just not just simplifying all this?”
Rex looked up at Ruby. “It will be fine.”
“Oh yeah well, how are we gonna eat for the week?”
"I mean, I don’t know how to act human!"
“I can’t forget.” Rex groaned
Ruby shrugged. "They sleep at night...and eat..food..and..umm smile a lot, right?” she ended lamely
Rex rolled his jet black eyes. “You are kidding me right?”
Rex sighed.” They are sooooo gonna stake us?”
Ruby tried to smile and wound up baring her fangs. “At lest.” she said
“It can't get any worse.”
Meanwhile in a deep dark cave a man brooded and obsessed.
And obsessed and brooded.
This man’s whole life was dedicated to killing vampires.
Now he had two famous ones in his sights.
Two vampires that lived right under his nose!
In! His! City!!
The man looked over his files on Rex and Ruby.
‘The yucky incident.’ The time some old lady had called Ruby’s new black and blood red hair ‘Yucky’ and she had subsequently ripped the old lady, every other person in the store, the store itself and even all the pigeons on the roof apart.
Rex had walked in seen the aftermath and just said
“You dint leave any for me?”
There was Rex's odd habit of killing everyone in a restaurant and then eating their food.
There was the hockey team that catcalled at Ruby and called Rex ‘fag’.
They had not been found, well….not whole.
Their parent's thought the chewed up bits on the doorsteps were their sons...and DNA testing of the bits confirmed it. One family just had a finger and an eyeball to bury.
The "gifts" as Rex and Ruby had called them in the notes they left where lovingly wrapped up in festive paper.
Also of note was the fact that after they became vampires they made sure they killed almost everyone who had seen them alive.
Almost everyone.
Rex had for some unknown reason left his mother alive.
Ruby had an Aunt alive who lived somewhere in Maine but no seemed to know just where.
Other than that every one of their friends and family was long dead.
But after 4 years of looking, Brent Calvin. A.K.A Nighthunter the city’s masked hero/ unhealthy obsessed madman, had a bead on Rex and Ruby at last.
This weekend, they died.
Karen block stepped off the plane.
She was waiting for her niece Lilly O'Hara
Or, she thought as she snorted at her niece's new name, Ruby Redman.
10 years ago Lilly had been told she had 8 weeks or so to live.
She didn't die; however, she made a full recovery, but…She was different
She slept all day
She had no faith.
It was clear to Karen what this meant.
Her niece...had become...a GOTH!!
Karen gasped a bit at the scandalous thought.
Her black shirt half-bared her pale breasts and her red skirt trailed behind her, her cream coat flapped as she walked.
Karen tried to push down the urge to cover Ruby with her coat.
With one smooth move Ruby pulled off her shades and pulled a hand in her hair.
"Listen...you’re only staying for a bit."
"I just don’t have the time-"
Karen cut her off "I’ll stay as long as I like Lilly, I"m the elder here!"
“That’s not my name.” Ruby said in-between her gritted teeth
Karen just turned away fussing with her purse.
Ruby, behind her Aunt’s back, hissed baring her fangs.
"Where's daisy?" asked Ruby.
"Your cousin is driving up." Karen said curtly.
Ruby rolled her eyes. "When are you to going to learn no one cares if you fuck, and she's not your cousin?"
Karen stared after Ruby as she began walking over to get the bags.
Rex G grunted as he pulled the last body from the freezer, getting ready to take it out.
He pulled as hard as he could and a leg came off.
"Great...why me…am I such a bad guy?" he asked no one in particular.
Somehow he was petty sure he knew the answer .At last his chore was done.
Now it was time to play. Rex slipped up to one of the "guest rooms" were he had
a 13 year old girl.
She was the daughter of a well-known gang leader.
When she was found with his rival’s mark on her...ankh the drawn on her breast, Rex grinned all fangs and red eyes.
The blood and pain would go beyond anything seen in years
Rex walked into the utterly dark room where the girl was kept.
She was still in her school uniform, hers was a loving father, and she had gone to the best schools.
The girl gasped even though there was no way she could have know that Rex was there. He made no sound and there was no light.
But maybe her past experiences with him had given her some insight; after all she had been there a week or so.
"Viviane..." Rex whispered in her ear.
Viviane whimpered around her gag and pulled on her handcuffs that chained her to a metal pole in the room.
"The time has come. “ “I can't let you stay...my mom's coming to visit."
"Yes, dear even monsters have mothers"
"So...."he murmured trailing his razor nail down her neck as he took off the cuffs.
She beat at him trying to get away, moaning pitifully. He chuckled as he tore her arm off and began to feed.
Ruby opened the door to her apartment, and ushered her Aunt in.
The first room was the living room. It was decked out in a punk style.
There were pillows all over the floor, a huge TV and a few couches.
On one wall there was a canvas with many different drawings.
The other wall had paper with poems and tags.
Karen took in the Christmas lights all over, the black rug and the Munch on the wall.
She didn't like it.
Ruby led Karen to the back of the house into the kitchen.
It was decked out in 50's style, with a diner booth, napkin holders and all.
There were even bubble glasses.
Ruby led the way to a guest room.
It was done in a black and white minimalist style.
Nothing more than needed….nothing less.
"This is you room for now, I have to go out."
Karen looked at Ruby. "You’re not a very good hostess!"
Ruby's eyes glowed red a bit.
"I…have...to eat." Ruby said with her teeth gritted as she
left leaving her aunt staring after her for the second time that day.
The music hurt Ruby's supernatural ears.
She could hear every base pulse, every word the boy sang along to his every heartbeat...most of all the heart.
Ruby looked up at her mortal lover's house; she was standing outside under the window.
Suddenly he tossed the curtains back and came out on the balcony.
He looked out at the setting sun and sighed.
Ruby slipped into his mind…he missed her.
He knew what she was...it just didn't matter.
Ruby knew he thought she was "tormented and harmless really" as he had said before.
She shook her head at his stupidity. She took a certain joy in this dance of death…the winning of trust. She only went for the most broken.
She took the time to become whatever they wanted.
Whatever was needed. They fell for her every time, then she would feed on the blood she liked best...love...happiness… hope.
But even better then that was the times that she told them they meant nothing to her....the pain despair and betrayal was so painfully perfect.
She also liked children ...her daughter….Ruby sighed thinking of her daughter's sweet skin.
Of the times she would hold the girl close after giving her a day of love and joy...the blood...so sweet, so rich.
Larissa, who she had stolen at the age of 2 from her dead family, the family Ruby had killed but Larissa knew nothing of that.
She was 12 now, away at the boarding school she and Rex had picked out.
Ruby was taken away from her thoughts as her lover saw her at last.
He waved and smiled. "Come on in" he called to her
She crouched a bit then leaped straight up in the air, easily landing on the balcony next to him.
He gasped almost as a reflex
"No matter how many times I’ve seen you do that...I still feel that same-"
"Fear as the first time?" she asked. He shook his head.
"No, wonder."
"You’re really asking for it...aren’t you Quinn?"
"Asking for what?"
Ruby bared her fangs top and bottom white, gleaming, deadly.
"This..." she whispered pulling him into her arms, finding the perfect hollow of his neck.
Rex G walked down from the upstairs apartment, feeling full and ready for a nap.
He and Ruby rented both the up and downstairs. The down was made up for living, having anyone over; Larissa's room was down there also.
The computer and the TV, things they dint want blood on.
The upstairs was for fun...and eating.
Rex used it more. Ruby went to her victims more often then Rex went to his.
He liked to have "alone" time with them.
As Rex walked down he heard a sound.
The phone rang, one time then again.
"Hello?" Rex heard someone answer the phone.
"Who?" Rex in the stairwell moved closer.
"Larissa?" Rex made his move slamming the door open into the intruder's back.
The body made a thud as it hit the floor.
Rex grinned as he opened the door knowing he would find the would-be thief on the floor with a lump or two.
What he did find was a middle-aged woman on the ground, with the phone in her hand.
He picked it up.
"Yes?” "Yes I am Larissa Goldman's father."
Rex's eyes grew wide with shock.
"She has been doing what?" He asked.
"I see.... I see..."
"I hope no charges are brought as, well Miss Curtis."
"Thank you, your check is in the mail."
He hung up.
"Woo Ha!!" he screamed “That’s my girl!!!"
Rex smiled in utter bliss, it was more terrifying than the doctor saying " Did you ever see this lump before?
Rex looked down at the limp form before him.
He had just finished tying her up with a dishtowel when Ruby stormed in.
"Rex your daughter-" she stopped short when she saw the woman on the floor.
"Why is my aunt tied up on the floor Rex G?" Ruby asked twitching a bit.
"Your aunt?" Rex asked blankly
"Alex Theodore Goldstein you were standing behind a door when they gave out the brains, right?”
"Who else was it going to be?"
Rex shrugged and pouted a bit. "I don't know ...and you should have told me she was here!"
"You were feeding upstairs right?" Rex nodded "So I should have taken the risk you were in a blood coma or a worse a blood rage?"
"Oh Aunt Karen he's just napping with that dead
body.."
Rex rolled his eyes "You know I can control it I rarely go into blood madness anymore....unless I want to."
Ruby leaned over and laid a hand on Karen's head.
"I don’t think she will remember anything.”
"Really Rex next time think."
"Fuck you, lover" Rex said sweetly
Ruby rolled her eyes "Not with Daisy and Karen's double-dong honey"
"Now you have to stay here as I go get Larissa, and Nora, Daisy will be here soon she’s driving down, be good OK?"
Rex pouted again "I'm not that dumb Ruby Red!"
"That's up for debate Rex, you won’t be alone with her for very long I hope you can handle it."
Ruby left.
Rex sat down at the computer and pouted. "I can handle it little miss high and mighty."
He typed in his favorite website
www.unitethenite.org
Then tapped in his screen name BloOdDrInKIngDOnutEAter
After he was turned he and Ruby had gone looking for their kind
What he had found was this site. It had a certain code so that you could only get on with a password that had to given to you ahead of time and the password was only given if you could prove you where one of the blood.
Rex smiled remembering when he had gotten the password.
It was a few months after he had died; he and Ruby were ripping into a homeless guy in an ally. When there was a sound behind them.
A man stood there. "Sloppy….are you new at this?" he had asked utterly at ease
Ruby had jumped at the guy with her fangs out. He had batted her away easily then after kicking Rex's ass too he had taken them out for a drink. He was a master older then time almost. The name he went by was Wolf. "Listen if you two are to live past your first 100 years you are going to have know a thing or two." Wolf had trained them for
2 years made them into something to behold.
Rex shook his head he had been daydreaming. Wolf had not come over in a while maybe he had taken a nap again.
He was known to take 100-year naps otherwise he got too bored.
Rex sighed and went into his private messages. "More shit from adoring fans" he thought.
He was right; there was one from someone called
ZoBmikiDD
It went as such "Dear mister g, when I was turned I dint have any idea how to be bad you and Miss red have shown me the way. Now I go see a movie then tell everyone going into it after me the end!" "I also use the handicapped bathrooms" Rex shook his head "I have to kill this loser later." Then he opened a different one, from someone called DeadNLOveinIt "Rex and Ruby, I hope you get this in time" "There is a hunter after you" "Be very careful"
Rex went to the profile on the guy who sent him the warning. He hit the button for the guy’s AIM name
LIVeingDEadBoYY the window popped up.
Rex typed in hello...are you the one who warned me?
I might be . . . . . came back.
How did you know and who are you? Asked Rex, there was a long pause.
Rex thought he had lost the guy then something popped up.
Come to this address 5 20 mill lane road tonight whenever you can get there. . . . I’m having a little party. . . . . . . bring Ruby. . . . . . You have to use the same password as on untiethenite. . . . . .I will tell you everything then.
The message popped up LIVeingDEadBoYY is no longer on AIM.
Rex pulled out his cell and called Ruby “Ruby are you there? “
“Yes I’m here...what is it now? Did you almost kill Daisy too?”
“No...We have a new wrinkle...there is a hunter after us...”
“ Shit...how did you find out? “
“ Untiethenite where else?”
“ Who told you? Do we know him? Do we know this hunter?”
“Some kid called DeadNLOveinIt we don’t know him and he dint say the hunter’s name...we have to go to his party tonight.”
“OK...call Wolf to come with we might need back up....”
“ I will.” Rex hung up.
As Rex puzzled over everything the phone rang.
He gave it the look of death.
After all the dammed thing had given him more then it’s fair share of shit in the last few days.
The phone rang again.
Rex considered finding Alexander Gram Bell’s decedents and taking a fire poker to a few heads.
When the phone rang for a third time he made up his mind to do the fire poker idea.
Then it spoke in Wolf’s voice. “Answer Rex...now”
Rex nearly killed himself tripping over the rug in his mad dash to get the phone.
“WOLF!” I was just going to call you, how are you? Rex demanded when he answered at last.
“Well my erstwhile apprentice I do have an uncanny way of doing that... but this time I just wanted to call.”
“Have I told you that you’re my favorite lately?”
“Erstwhile?”
“Former, how are you dear, are you happy?”
“Happiness is a word for amateurs Wolf...you taught me that.”
Wolf’s deep rich laugh sounded over the phone.
Rex considered letting one or two of Graham’s grandkids live.”
“Where have you been of late?”
“Here and there wondering this wide earth of ours”
The door bust open, Ruby and Nora came in.
Nora rushed over to Rex and enfolded him in an asphyxiating embrace. “Alex my dear son!”
“Ma....ma...MA!!” yelled Rex the phone dangling from his hand. “You’re killing me here.”
Ruby just snorted at that one.
“And it’s Rex now.”
“Sorry dear.”
“Who’s on the phone?” Ruby asked lazily
“Wolf” Rex rasped out from under his mother’s arms.
“Wolf!!” Ruby grabbed up the phone.
“Daddy!!!” she giggled. “How have you been?”
“Fine my dear and how’s my favorite daughter??
“Fine....Larissa’s been kicked out of school again, she had hooked up cameras in the bathrooms and showers. She was running a kiddy porn site!’
At that moment 3 things happened at the same time, Larissa came in the door singing along to her Sex Pistols CD dressed like a mini ruby,
Karen woke up, and Wolf laughed so hard Nora heard him from across the room and gasped in fear a bit.
“Daddy I have to go...come over later we need to talk.” “Call you later dear?” “Adore you daddy”
“I wanna be....anarchy!!!? screamed Larissa as she swayed her hips, and pumped a small fist in the air.
“Young lady!!” yelled Karen. Larissa and Ruby both jumped at the tone of voice, proving that old habits do die hard and even a vampire is not immune.
“Who is she and why is she dressed like that and dancing like that??
“She’s....my… cousin’s daughter’s grandkid and she staying here a while because she is sick.... she has...umm...hematotis of the left folia.” “Tell her why you are dressed like that young lady.” Ruby turned to face Larissa and winked.
Larissa looked at Karen dead on and said with a perfectly believable expression said “Miss Ruby only had this to give me, when they took me into the hospital they had to cut my own outfit off” Larissa looked close to tears. I trained her well. Ruby thought to herself. Karen rushed over to Larissa and pulled her into a hug. Over Karen’s shoulder Larissa gave Ruby a questioning look.
“Bathroom” Ruby mouthed as she headed that way. Larissa disentangled herself and joined Ruby in the bathroom. “What the fuck is going on out there?”
Larissa demanded in a hushed but intense tone. “My Aunt and Rex’s mom.”
“Otherwise know as karma.” Larissa tapped a foot on the floor.
“And why are we not killing them?” Ruby rolled her eyes.
“I really don’t know why we didn’t in the first place but now….someone’s hunting us….it’s too risky.” Larissa gave Ruby a dark look. “You want me to keep them happy don’t you?” “Do the I’m-such-a-cute-little-thing-look-at-me-and-don’t ask-too-many-questions-song-and-dance, right?” Ruby smiled.
“You are sharp one, my love.” Larissa nodded. “We can do this but it’s cost you let’s see sweet talking dikes, time, emotional damages I would say…3000.”
“You price-gouging brat!” “What do you mean emotional damage?!” “You got the way you are somehow Mom, I think I just met how and why.” “Not all of it you never met my mother.” Larissa folded her arms. “Deal?” “Fine but not to much sugar, nothing alive, and no porn.” Larissa nodded. “Fine by me.”
Larissa walked out of the bathroom. Karen seeing her called “Want to go shopping for some better things with me honey?”
Ruby looked at Larissa who leaned over and muttered.
“The things I do for you and Daddy.”
Larissa smiled at Karen “I’d love to go shopping with you, do mind if I call you Aunty Karen?”
Karen got misty eyed.
“Of course not!”
Nora having let go of poor Rex at last, began pottering around the apartment.
“Ruby dear...when did you last dust?” “Dust?” Ruby asked blankly “Hmmm oh dear.... would you mind if I did?”
“Knock yourself out.” Rex shrugged when Ruby looked at him funny. “She’s a Jewish mom...what did you think she would do?”
"Next thing ya know she’ll be asking me to read the Torah more often.”
“Rex” called Nora “See here it comes” the vamp in question said.
“Do you have a mop?” “Damm I’m off today” He muttered.
Karen had put Larissa on her lap and was talking down to her.
“So old are you dear?”
“Eleven Aunty Karen.” Larissa said in sticky sweet tones.
The doorbell rang ‘A night on bald mountain’ Ruby looked like a deer in headlights.
Ruby flung the door open and there stood Daisy.
Ruby smiled in what she thought was a gracious manner.
The flannel clad, rubber boot wearing, mullet having dike just pushed past her to her girlfriend.
“Hey honey how’s my favorite cousin?? Ruby rolled her eyes.
Nora came out of the bathroom with a rag tied around her head. ‘Hi I’m Nora Alex’s Mom.” “IT’S REX MA!”
“Sorry hon.” Daisy just looked at Nora’s outstretched hand oddly. “I don’t shake hands...to many germs, right Karen?” ”Oh yes.” Karen shuddered
“There are germs everywhere.” “When Lilly lived with us she could never see why we wanted her to encase everything in tinfoil and shower 12 times a day.” Karen went on. “She often smelled...” She shook her head “Only I and Daisy could smell it...but we knew...she had germs!!”
Larissa jumped down form Karen’s lap. “Miss Ruby can me and Aunty Karen go out shopping after you make dinner?”
"Sure honey” Ruby said hassled, as she ran off to cook.
Wolf stood waiting on his children's doorstep. He pulled out his flask and ran a thumb over the letters Vindi, Vidi ,Vchi and smiled. He took a hit of whiskey, then he pulled in a deep lung full of air he dint need to sigh. His toe tapped the floor in his long black calfskin boot. He wore baggy leggings, a short tunic toped his look.
He rapped loudly on the door. Ruby flung the door open. She cocked her head to one side. "This a costume party?” She asked "Yes, my dear" Wolf said in French as he kissed her hand
"OK, I'll bite who are you?" "Rene Rimbaud"
"Sorry to tell you but your a few hundred years off judging by that costume" "Well young blood when you've seen over a thousand years then we can tell if it all doesn't run together." Ruby ushered Wolf in. Rex lazed on the sofa. "Who the hell are you Louis the vampire?" "Sure” Wolf said
"After all Louis the XX was one.” “Really?” Rex asked
"There was no Louis the twentieth” called Ruby from her room. Ruby came out of her room wearing a pair of unremarkable blue jeans, and a black sweatshirt. She had on no makeup.
Rex walked around her a circle. "Where's your razzle-dazzle outfits your short skirts and red capes?" She smiled her teeth were yellow. “It’s just a glamour Howl gave me it’ll wear off soon.”
“I’m ugly for the night." Rex ran off to go change. Wolf sat down.
"Where's my granddaughter" he asked "She's off with Daisy and Karen buying new outfits." Wolf frowned
"What is wrong with what she wears most of the time?”
"Long story." "My dear you must get rid of these meddling humans let Daddy take care of it."
“ No, I got a message that we are being hunted…..what if it was one of the demon hunters, like The Guardians of the Grey Dawn?” Wolf waved hand. “The hunters of the hunters never dare to come after anyone working for Wolf, Howl and Shadow….you know that. “As for the Guardians everyone goes on about them and their holy crusading half-blood monks....well in all my time I have never even seen one of them.” “And even if they did to dare hunt the beloved of one of the heads of the company?” “I would kill them to a man myself if they laid a hand on you Rex or Larissa and just as much to prove the point as from love.”
Ruby nodded but still looked worried. Wolf deftly changed the topic.
"So who is this guy throwing the party?"
"I don’t know I just saw a post on untiethenite about it, it was a come one come all kinda thing." Ruby replied
Wolf pushed his burnt gold hair out of his face. He still looked like the roman emperor he had been.
“Rex are you almost done?” Ruby called “Coming, Sugar”
Rex pranced out of his room. He had on a whale bone corset and stays. Over this was a jet green dress that puffed out. He bounced his black curls and smiled at Ruby’s stunned face. “Well if ya’ll are dressing down I’m dressing up!”
‘You’re Scarlet O’Hara?” “Yeah hon.” Ruby shook her head. Wolf shrugged. They left the house and jumped into Ruby’s 79’ Cadillac El Dorado.
It gleamed candy apple red in the foggy night; it was Ruby’s pride and joy.
She jammed on the gear shift and swung the great red eel (as she called it) over to Fifth Ave.
Ruby steeped on the breaks and Rex and Wolf flew forward.
“Where are we this isn’t the place is it?” Rex asked
“Nope that loser vampire that you told me about it’s his house.”
“He’s holding a Vampire R.P.G thing tonight I know because he invited us!”
Rex’s eyes widened.
“You mean that this idiot is in there with other little black wearing little morns who think that they are lovers of the night!?”
His voice was hushed. Ruby nodded gravely. Rex stood on the backseat of the car “Then” He said in a bold voice.
"I owe to this poor misguided soul and anymore assholes he may bite I owe it!”
Rex shouted looking noble and jabbing his finger in the air. “I owe to the vampire community and the world at large to kill this loser now!”
His front of stalwartness might have held if he hadn’t tripped over his dress as he got out of the car. Ruby snorted at him as he got up.
He flipped her finger.
Wolf went after him inside. Ruby turned off the car and walked over to the porch to wait for them.
Ruby sat down on a swing-chair trying not to hear the unpleasant sounds from inside the house. Rex and Wolf could get messy and mean when they unwound.
She really wasn’t that kind of girl, so she didn’t mind waiting. Not that Ruby never got mean or messy sometimes she was both it was just…..sometimes Wolf and Rex were so….crude. Ruby looked up at the stars thinking to her self about different things. For one thing it was odd being in this ugly girl glamour.
It reminded her too much of being alive, being invisible. She smirked to herself.
It would be just too pathetic if the real reason I became a vampire was to be noticed.
She thought scornfully as she twirled some hair around her finger.
A man of about twenty came walking up to the porch; he nodded to her as he paced over to the door, put his hand on it, and then walked over to her. “Did you see someone about my age go inside, pale skin really pretty she might have been dressed in black or red?” he asked her, his voice muted and silken. Ruby could almost feel it caressing her. She looked up at him “No, sorry.” He sat down next to her and sighed. “Something .....wrong?” Ruby asked cautiously as she looked at him in the moonlight. His throat worked as he swallowed. “No, yes....maybe....” He trailed off. Ruby couldn’t help but smile a bit. “So, who are you looking for, your girlfriend?” He shook his head. “No....not a girlfriend...I don’t really date.”
He looked at her. “You?” “Do I date or do I have a boyfriend?”
“Whatever.” “No on both fronts.”
“There was someone, once but he turned out to be a monster or maybe it was me...” “I’m Rose by the way.” He extended his hand to her.
She shook it. “So.....why don’t you date?” He sighed a bit. “It’s odd isn’t it that most people feel like they can tell strangers things they can’t tell anyone else?”
“It is.” Ruby swung her legs a bit looking over at Rose every now and then.
She had to say she liked what she saw.
His face was much like his voice, cool, thoughtful like a mask made by someone who was a master of remaking the male form. His ice blue eyes seemed to envelope the light rather then reflecting it. He lightly toyed with one of his full lips with one long fingered hand.
“Do you know that you’re beautiful?” Ruby asked directly. He jumped as if he had forgotten she was there. He looked at her a bit dazed. “What?” “You.’
“Are.” “Hot.” Rose blinked and stared at Ruby blankly. She smiled. “You don’t get out do you?” He shook his head. “It’s not just that but you are kind of different from most girls I know.” She tilted her head to the side as she smiled wickedly “What are most girls you know like?” “Duty and honor and honor and duty and am I doing my duty honorability?” “But I guess I’m like that too.”
“Hell of a way to live.” “I guess so.” I never saw it as something to think about.....I just...I mean it’s always been like this.....I can’t remember anything else.” “I’m all id I rarely think beyond ‘Want, take, have’ “That not a very moral way to live.” Ruby lit a smoke. “Fuck moral it just gets in the way!” Rose shook his head. “No really, think about it, how many songs of glory are written about anyone with honor or duty?” “In this world we like our fictional heroes up-right and our real leaders to have their pants down and their dicks up.” Ruby waved her hand at him. “Fuck, now I’ve horrified you.” “No....just I could never live like that.” “It’s a jungle out there I got to look out for me and mine, no more.”
Rose shrugged “Everyone is me and mine to me.” “Wow, you’re Pollyanna meets Batman or something.” Rose pushed his hair behind his ear. “And you don’t fool me missy, I know this whole ‘I couldn’t care less thing is an act.’ ”
“It’s not an act I really don’t care; you can’t even begin to image the things I do every day to get by.” “Most people who think they are bad are really good people, bad ones don’t worry about it.” Ruby leaned over to him, taking his head in her hands looking into his eyes. “What are you-?” She answered him by covering his mouth with hers. He went a bit rigid then relaxed and wound his arm around her waist, the other hand running in her hair. “You pick this up quick.” Ruby murmured as she savaged his mouth. “I have a good teacher.” He bit her lip. Ruby shoved her hand under his shirt gliding her fingers over his skin.
His skin was silky and he was cooler then most humans. Some warning bell went off in her head when she noted his body temperature but she wrote it off.
She pulled back from him to look into his eyes again. He screamed and pulled away. “What, what is it?” She asked as he scrabbled backwards. “You- You’re- a vampire!” She looked at her glamour stone, it was dark. “Oh shit, I guess the glamour wore off faster then I thought, I’m really sorry I scared you with it.” She smiled. “I just forget I guess also it was nice to be able to just-“He cut her off. “What is your name?”
“Ruby.” His face went pale. “You’re the one I was looking for.” “Why?”
He pulled out a staff. “I have been sent here to take you back to my master.” “Will you come quietly?” Ruby stood up tiled her head to the side.
She looked at Rose one last time then gave him her answer. “Fuck no!” She punched him in the face sending him flying onto the lawn. She walked slowly over to his prone from. She sat down on him hard grinding her hips into his. “So who and what are you?” He just growled low in his throat. “Oh yeah, honor and duty.” She was so busy twisting his hand into new shapes that she never saw the magus’s fire that he smacked her in the head with coming. She rolled off him trying to put her hair out. “Now that was just uncalled for!” she shouted at him “And how did you do that, you were cold, you’re like me!” ”None of our kind can cast magic.” “Not like you, half.” “Dampier that’s what you are, not one or the other cursed by our kind and hated by the daylight world.” She spat out. He moved closer to her like lighting. “Yes.” He hissed “That’s the curse that the first vampire laid on my kind.” “When she met the first half blood she sealed all our fates by out casting us and ever after have the Dampier hunted the vampire out of shame and hatred.” ”Well what did you expect; no one likes a guy who can’t pick a fucking side, that’s why everyone hates the Swedes.” He gaped at her “The way you see the world is so wrong in so many ways.” He began weaving his fingers in the air and chanting. Ruby, no fool grabbed his arms and pinned them forcing her mouth on his again partly to mind-fuck him partly to stop the spell. He shoved at her she pulled back a bit but did not release her crushing grip on him. “Sorry it’s just with all the mixed messages you’re putting out there I don’t know if I should kill you or fuck you.”
He rasped out “Kill me.” She smiled at him. “You really are cute when you’re homicidal.” She looked over her shoulder Rex and Wolf were standing there waiting for her sharing a joint. “Hypocrite.” She looked at Rose. “My Dad is waiting for me. Sorry to end this, I really am.” She bit him hard. She tasted his blood but something was wrong she felt her limbs growing heavy and weak. She thought she heard him laugh as she passed out. “My blood is poison to you, sorry honey.” She wanted to say something to him, something important but she couldn’t.
20 minutes later…..
Ruby pulled herself off the ground slowly. Her limbs were still stiff. She winced and turned her head all the way around. Rex walked over to her just as her head was on backwards. “Don’t do that!” he yelped
Her head swung around. “Sorry “she said He fanned himself with a lace fan. “Rex you’re such a queen.”
Ruby muttered. Wolf pushed between them. “Now, Now kids don’t squabble.” He said moving them toward the car. Once in the car Ruby jammed on it even harder then she did most of the time.
Rex hung on for dear unlife and yelled over the wind “So are we just going to pretend it didn’t happen?” “What didn’t happen?” Ruby asked in a tone that brooked no arguments. Wolf shook his head at Rex. “Let it go for now....she’ll tell you when she’s ready.” Rex took Wolf’s advice most of all because they were there. The all got out and walked up to the door.
Rex knocked. “Password?” someone asked
“Blood bank” Rex said. “Come on in.”
The door opened up to a riot of noise and colors.
The walls were packed with vampire, zombies and all manner of undead. In the center of a cluster stood a man about 25 or 30 at the most, he looked like a vampire.
“This daylight world must be stopped!” “They only care about money, fame, power and perfection!”
He shouted “The humans are killing this world slowly and must be put back in their place as prey!”
Ruby leaned over to Rex “He trying to start a war?”
Rex shook his head “I think he’s DeadNLOveinIt, Untiethenite has become more and more radical lately.” “This guy is leading the pack of vampires that want a war.”
Wolf who had lagged behind them to get drinks, walked over. He dropped it on his shoes when he saw the man yelling. “Romulus?” he muttered “I have to leave
Ruby” “Why, and who’s Romulus? She asked shocked at Wolf’s manner
“Romulus, my former meteor he was the one who built Rome.” “For years he cared for nothing other then looking after his city his people when Rome fell so long ago he went mad and swore to find the Seven Weapons of The Old Gods and kill all the humans.”
Ruby had never seen Wolf so panicked. “We parted ways long ago when he told me of his plans.”
“I pray that no one ever finds what he is looking for.” “Wolf old friend?” Romulus said clapping him on the back. Wolf stiffened from alarm at having Romulus sneak up on him. ”And you must be Miss Red such a rare and lovely jewel. You remind me of a great actress who graced the stages of Rome when she was in her prime.” Rex looked at Romulus “Mister you’re so full of shit it’s a wonder your pretty green eyes don’t turn brown.”
Romulus laughed. “I am a flatter aren’t I?”
Rex nodded “Well yeah.” He said dryly as he walked off to go talk to Tom and Ron two drug dealing zombies that he knew. They ran Tom and Ron’s no tell toxic waste dump. “Hey guys!” he called to them over the music.
“Hey Rex anything for us to pick up?” Tom asked
“Yeah have the family come over ok?” “Will do” Ron drawled
“And tell Ruby to come over soon we found something she might like.” ” Will do that.” Rex saw a cute blonde grinning at him. He went off to dance with her and nearly bumbled into Ruby dancing with Romulus. Rex smiled this might be a good night after all.
At 5 am that morning just before dawn Rex and Ruby stumbled home.
Romulus had talked their ears off while giving them more and more of his 500 year old wine. He had told them how he had hacked into a vampire hunter’s website and found that Rex and Ruby were being hunted per say by Nighthunter, a somewhat incompetent hunter. Ruby giggled drunkenly as she tripped over a chair. Wolf staggered into apartment.
He looked paler then usual as he handed Ruby a note, he found on the floor.
“Mommy- The bad, bad, boring man said to write this to you. He seems to think that I, the dikes and the Jewish lady are vampires come get us soon he won’t stop talking!?-I’m bored, Larissa.
Ruby looked up with a set grim face. ‘We have to get
‘Rissa got get the equipment, I’ll fire up the car. “
Meanwhile in a dark damp cave-like basement
Larissa was bored very...... very....... bored.
“Reveal your true nature vampire!? He yelled and tossed blood on Larissa.
“Hmmm is that pig’s blood?” “No don’t tell me....”
“Ahh mister hunter?” “Would you let me dust your
cave....here?” Nora asked
Nighthunter looked at Nora and something snapped or maybe it melted as a romance writer would tell you.
Whatever happened, all of Nighthunter’s mommy issues bubbled up. He let Nora out of her cage. Karen began whining at once. “Why don’t we get to be let out?” “I have very important things to do?!” “I run a bed and
breakfast you know!” ?Quiet unholy thing?” Nighthunter roared
Nora giggled a bit and batted her eyes then went to go dust.
Karen was not the brightest lesbian in denial ever, she was not the kindest or the even the meanest but even the mediocre can get the point and as she looked at the bubbling acid that she hung over strapped up by her wrists as she was, she began to worry.
Ruby kicked the door of Nighthunter’s lair open with a crash, behind her was Wolf with an Uzi and Rex with a wielding iron. Rex screamed at the top of his lungs. “MA !?!?” “WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?”
Nora jumped out Nighthunter’s arms. “Oh..ahh..Alex....” “Rex
Ma, Rex.” He muttered rubbing his temples. Ruby looked over Rex’s shoulder and tried to muffle her snicker. Wolf found his shoes to be the best thing to look at suddenly. Nora patted her hair into place. “Now honey don’t get upset but me and Brent-“
“BRENT, WHO THE FUCK IS BRENT !?!?!” Rex shirked “Now Mrs. Goldstein....”
Ruby said pushing Rex aside. “What Alex is saying is-“ “Listen.” Nora said firmly “I put my whole life on hold for Alex and now I want to live.” She paused
“I and Brent here are getting married.” Rex ranted. Rex raved, Rex waved the Uzi around.
At last he screamed “But he’s a-““Vampire hunter?”
Nora said calmly “And you’re a vampire?’
Rex gaped at her. ‘I’m glad we no longer have to pretend honey, I may old Jewish and your mom but dumb I’m not? She smiled ?I love you no matter what as I know you will me, I’m just glad you’re not gay, Brent wont hunt you or your friends and it’s all settled then.” “I want out! “Larissa called
Ruby rushed over the cage Larissa had been in it was just a few feet off the floor. She opened it and pulled her daughter out.
“I was worried about you.” Larissa said “I was worried about you.” Ruby sighed. Larissa hugged her mom tightly.” ”Did you want the dikes back?’ “Not really.” “Good then cause their dead.”
Ruby looked at the acid vat the daisy and Karen had been hanging over.
Brent looked up from kissing Nora. “Hmmm I knew I should have tightened the bolts on that rack, oh well.” “Oh Brent.” Nora sighed “Call me NIghthunter honey.” Rex, Ruby, Larissa and Wolf walked out together. “Well I guess that Nora just wanted someone to stake her!” “Ruby” Rex growled “Do you think they are going to have a themed wedding?” “Will Nora wear a Wonder woman get-up?” Ruby asked slyly Rex cursed at her.
“Well all’s well that ends well” said Wolf.
“Maybe it was O-B positive.” Larissa wondered.
3 weeks later.
Ruby Red, mother, vampire and habitual chain-smoker woke in her bed of red velvet and black silk.
She reached over to her nightstand for one of the 10 packs she had bought last night.
Her questing hand found only nothingness.
Clad just in her nightie, red hair swinging and violet eyes blazing, she stomped out to confront her partner in crime, Rex G, about her distinct lack of nicotine.
However Rex was not in the living room. She was just about to go look for him when the door bell rang.
She flung the door open and there rubbing his hair and shifting from foot to foot was Rose. He held a box more boxes were around him.
“What are you doing here, Rose?” She asked coldly giving him a death glare. “It’s Black Rose to you.” He stared her down and matched her tone.
“Cute, every narcissistic asshole in the fucking world has some kind of code name these days.” She smiled to show her fangs. “Wolf calls me Bloody Gem and I live up to the name as I’m sure you know, Black Rose or should I call you, Guardian of The Grey Dawn?”
His face gave away no shock at her knowing who he was but inside he reeled.
“How did you know?” She folded her arms. “I pay attention to old myths and that put together with what you are it was easy.” “Why are here what do you want?” Black Rose gazed at her evenly. “I’m here to offer you a truce.”
“I don’t even know what you wanted with me in the first place!” “That matters not now, my mission has changed.” “Why?” He smiled a chilly smile. “We have been persuaded.... persuaded so well that five of our most elite members are dead, that Mr. Malcome does a very good job one monk lived just long enough to crawl home tell us what happened and why and then die in my arms as I tried to heal him.”
“Hobbes is the best for a reason and stuff your sob story where ever you think it might fit .” He went on as if she had never said anything. “So if you let me live here in your up-stairs apartment to keep an eye on....things, then it’s all ok.”
“If not....” He raised an eyebrow. “We will keep coming and coming until at least you and all you love is dead and even your ‘Daddy’ will not stop it.” Black Rose grabbed Ruby’s wrist. “Roanoke Island, ever heard of it?” ”A very famous case a whole Conley of people disappears off the face of the earth, just gone one day.” “I will tell you something Miss Red, Roanoke Island was infested with the Un-dead over run as it were.” His eyes were blazing with hate and passion. “The song of the Pied Piper works on all kinds of things, and we just happened to have that evil warlock’s pipe.” “Every one of them walked into the sun because we willed it so and we could the same to you.” Ruby stared into his eyes. “I don’t want to fuck with you, do I?” Black Rose stared back. “Me you might take but you do not want to fuck with us.” Ruby rolled her eyes. “How do I know you are not going to kill me and Rex in our sleep?” Black Rosé pulled out a necklace. “On my honor and duty as a guardian I swear it is not so.” A golden light shimmered in the air. “There I am bound by magic to do you and Rex no harm while I live here unless it is in my own defense or the defense of an innocent.” Ruby sighed. “I guess I have no choice here.” Black Rose picked up one of his boxes and walked into the house. “But you pay triple times market value, asshole!” “And you get to pick Rex’s leftovers out of the rug!” “Yeah, yeah whatever.” Ruby followed him inside. She sat down on the couch wondering what she was going to tell Rex. Her hand hit something, she pulled it out. It was her pack. She had just lit up when she heard an unholy rumpus coming form up-stairs.
“Never goes into a blood rage my ass.” Ruby muttered as she ran up to fix the mess. As she did she was thanking her dark goddess for her family.
