My name is Virgil Matthews and in all of my sixteen years I’ve never been more shocked than this moment.

Actually, I don’t get many shocks at all. My life is fairly quiet, boring even. And if something exciting happens, it’s never with this kind of magnitude.

Picture me, will you, a somewhat tall, quiet-looking young man with longish black hair and even quieter blue eyes, school uniform neat and proper with the most unbelieving look that has ever graced his – my – face.

Then imagine the prettiest boy you’ll ever see: tall, very tall, and leanly built, with wide shoulders and long legs, blond haired and very green sparkly eyed and a full, lively mouth. The confidence and strength practically radiated from him, although he is clearly nervous too, from the way his big hands play with a striped tie and the dark blush on his cheeks.

He is Xander Miles.

I have had a crush on him for a long time now and I’ve been content to just pine from afar – or from the lenses of my camera. Besides, Xander isn’t gay. Well, I thought he wasn’t gay.

But when a guy says he likes you and wants to go out with you, another guy, then it sort of translates that he’s gay, doesn’t it?

“I…uhmm…I…I really like you, Virgil, and I’d like to…to go out with you, if you don’t mind…”

He’d even flinched a little after his shaky confession, as if I might reject him immediately and/or punch him for his daring.

Which, of course, I didn’t do. Instead, I am still left speechless, staring at him as if he’d just torn off all of his clothes and stood there, explicitly naked.

Xander is looking anywhere but at me, eyes flitting all over too quickly, returning ever so often at me before darting away again. And as my mental faculties begin to restore themselves, the initial shock I feel starts to waver and doubt creeps into my flabbergasted thoughts.

The impossibility of his confession, the sheer unlikelihood of his feelings for me, overpowers the happiness that flutters in my heart. It is just…unthinkable that someone like Xander, confident, beautiful and popular, can fancy someone like me, silent, reclusive and spends more time behind my camera than is necessary, when I should be using that time to make friends and party.

And that’s not taking into account the fact that we’re both guys.

Xander starts to fidget some more when I don’t say anything after his confession. He looks incredibly tense and eyes the door behind me.

Maybe it’s a joke. It’s more likely to be some sort of prank or dare given to him by one of his friends or something. Although the idea hurts me, it is the most acceptable reason.

“I…look, I’m sorry for having said…uhh that,” Xander begins in an oddly tight voice, “I know you think its completely inappropriate seeing as how we’re both guys and uhm…okay, just…” Xander shook his head, looking helpless. “Just forget I ever said anything, all right? I’ll just…leave…” He makes a move to do just that.

Xander looks so downtrodden that my certainty that this is all just a prank hesitates. I look at him; I mean really look at him. His shoulders are slumped, as if in defeat, and his green eyes are genuinely sad. His entire posture screams ‘dejected.’

Just as Xander passes me by, I, who has not yet said a word past my initial ‘WHAT?!’ unthinkingly reach out to bravely grasp his wrist and stop him. Xander pauses and blinks saddened eyes at me.

And instead of rightfully demanding an explanation if this is just some cruel prank, I just look at him and quietly say, “I-I’ll…go out with you.”

Then I feel my entire face burn crimson.

Now it’s Xander’s turn to gape at me.

It’s a moment I would have loved to capture on film.
