The Call

The Call

::: Never seen it happen, Wasn’t there at all
::: Couldn’t have predicted, Those memories would call

He looked up, the sky was beautiful. Blue and lovely. Why couldn’t it be raining? It would make this whole encounter so much less difficult. The rain would shield his facial expression. She wouldn’t pay much attention to him anyway, because she’d want to get back into the car. The rain could’ve explained his droopy behaviour. Everybody knew he was the kind of guy who liked nice, warm, sunny weather. But not today. Never today.

::: Until I heard your voice, On the other side
::: Calling out to get me, Calling out a lie

He walked to the bench, underneath their tree. The tree where she had slapped him so many years ago. Told him to get a grip and grow up. Told him that she was having a tough time too. Told him she realized what she’d done. All those years. What she’d done all those years to him... to her. Yes she was always on his mind.

::: A never ending story, This must be stopped tonight
::: Cuz when the demons come out to play...
::: You know the time is right

He saw her approach. Judy Kim, in her tight business attire, stylish heels and little purse held tightly in her hand. Judy Kim, with her sky blue eyes. Quite a startling sight, even for a woman her age.

“Hello Mother.”

“Hello,” their eyes briefly met. Blue on blue.

“You wanted to talk to me…”

“Yes. As you may know I went back to Moscow to talk to your siblings.” She paused, taking another look at him. He straightened up some more, trying not to look down, trying to look confident and strong, trying not to think of her blues when their eyes met. The whole family had gotten his mothers eyes. The whole damn family.

::: So help me out, When the stars light up
::: Help me out, to stop this show tonight

“They are doing quite fine. Gabby’s gotten a beautiful baby boy, he’s got my eyes. They sparkle… Much like her’s did.” Judy swallowed. “Umm, Daniela’s gained some weight and Tom’s started this remarkable-“

“I don’t need to know. They hurt me. That’s what I wanted to tell you. I don’t need to know. So there… there it is. I have no need to know what is going on in their lives,” he spoke softly, with a trace of sadness but still with a certain sense of finality.

“But…”

“No. I’m trough. They never cared, why should I?”

“We’re family.”

“No, we are not. You made sure we never would be. I found another family, right here. They may not be my blood,” may not have those eyes, “But they certainly make up for that in all they do.”

Silence ruled for a minute. The sunlight traced the tree, the bench, the blond hair of mother and child, the grass underneath their feet. A soft breeze floated by, as if to fill the painful silence, trying to make the lack of noise a bit less hurtful. The moment passed. Judy sighed.

“Fine then.”

“I… I don’t want to see you anymore,” he looked at her. Their eyes met and he couldn’t stop that feeling of longing. She saw it. She sighed again.

“I’m here. I may not have been in the past, but I’m here now.”

“Call me.”
