Prologue

He was coming closer and closer and the boy did not quite fancy this. The man was talking about something concerning his math test but he was not paying attention anymore. He had stopped listening a while ago when his teacher started to approach him. The teacher’s voice did not sound as if he was interested whatsoever in mathematics and that was rather uncommon for him. The student stood against the back wall next to the door and scrutinized the teacher’s face. He looked…
What was happening here? Did he really feel attracted to him? He had pondered long over those questions but never found an answer. There was something to this feeling since the boy normally liked his teacher.

Now excitement took over, a new kind of excitement he had never felt before.
When his teacher stood so close to him that he could distinguish every single eyelash, the boy held his breath. In that instant, the babbling about mathematics stopped. The man looked down on him, supported himself with his hand on the wall and bent lower. The struggle within himself that was fought between his heart and his brain was mirrored clearly in his eyes.

The student was only fifteen years old. He told himself from what he saw rather than from what he felt that this was leading in a wrong direction. So, he dived away under the outstretched arm and made for the door.

The next second he was gone and the perplexed teacher gazed anxiously at where he last had seen him. This was the most stupid thing he had ever done! He was almost twelve years older than the boy and even his teacher!

The youth ran along the empty corridors and thought about what had just happened, or almost happened. He was not naïve, and even though he sometimes acted the innocent, he never missed a chance to be with a girl. But it took him a while to figure out why his teacher had appeared so different to begin with. Without letting the idea consume his thoughts, he assumed it must have been partly because he had appeared interested and not disgusted in any way. Thank god, the man was a very young teacher.

For Ray’s eighteenth birthday, he received an old car that was barely capable of going more than sixty miles per hour. In fact, it most likely would be a total wreck only half a year from now.

For his graduation, his parents invited him on a six-week holiday to visit his aunt and uncle. He would have to share a room with his sister. The idea was dreadful.

Ray was already beyond pissed off when he climbed into the car. He was given a huge carton box that he had to hold during the four-hour ride. It intensively smelled of lemon and he wondered why his mother needed so many cleaning agents. Was this not supposed to be a vacation? Additionally, his mood was surely being influenced by his not yet having eaten breakfast.

Five hours and several stopovers later they finally reached the holiday house of their uncle. It was a simple two-story wooden house with kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms and most everything one might need. There was only one problem. Ray had to share his room with his little sister. She loved horses, weird TV-shows and music that Ray could not listen to for more than a few seconds without feeling the urge to puke. That was the situation and one could not change anything about it anymore.

Ray’s father had told him that since he had done so well in mathematics that they would visit one of his dad’s old friends while on their holiday. He was a professor at a university close by his aunt and uncle’s home. The professor and Ray could discuss the possibility of studying mathematics at his university. However, Ray was not too enthusiastic since he was supposed to be on a fucking holiday. Ray was soon to find out that his parents were totally serious about his continuing his studies.

The only thing good about the whole situation was that he might be able to see his cousin again. Once, they had been very good friends when they still lived on the same street. But Zach moved away because his dad had found a new job as teacher and coach in another town.

Chapter 1

On Wednesday, they left to visit Uncle Martin, Aunt Helen and Cousin Zach. Ray could not do anything but to give in to his fate. Not that he disliked them. He simply hated the way such visits went in general. There was just so much picked-out politeness, teatime, a walk around half the city and finally the endless talks about his future, his horrible haircut and on and on.

Zach, his cousin was the only one normal that he would be able to talk to that day. Usually Zach was clever enough to show his parents some difficult homework he still had to do so he would not have to join the party. But normally, Ray’s family came during school time. Now they were on holiday with no schoolwork to be done. So it happened that Ray and Zach sat at the table in the living room, watching their parents and Ray’s sister blathering, laughing and discussing things they talked about every time they met.

The boys gave the impression of sleeping, but in fact, their brains were working at high speed. They needed a good reason to leave the house. They had run out of things to talk about some time ago. After all, playing video games was much more fun than simply talking about them and soccer ought to be played in a place larger than a backyard.

“Dad!” Zach suddenly exclaimed.

His Dad started and angrily glared at him. He had been trying to help his niece build a house with playing cards.

“May I show Ray our new football pitch? He’d like to see!”

Martin said with a sudden excitement to his voice. “Sure! And tell him about the match will ya?” he added with a wink.

“I will!” Zach grinned and pulled his cousin out of the room.

On their way to the school grounds where Ray’s uncle was also teacher and coach of the football team, Zach explained the school had finally agreed to a complete overhaul of the pitch. Ray admired the new pitch with enough enthusiasm to elicit a proud smile on Zach’s face.

Later some friends of Zach showed up at the field. Most of them actually belonged to the school’s football team too. When Ray asked Zach what it was like to be coached by his Dad, his cousin frowned and sadly grinned.

“He hates someone else to be better than me. Then he forces me to intensify my training sessions.”

“So you’re the best in the team?” concluded Ray. Zach shook his head.

“Nah, I wouldn’t say that. Maybe I am when it comes to strength and stamina. But the team’s most skilled player is Brian. My Dad considers him my biggest competition since we both do pretty well as forward.”

They kicked the ball around for about an hour and then the other boys had to leave. Zach and Ray did not feel like going home yet and so Zach persuaded his friend to leave the football for them to keep playing.

When they were finally alone, they sat down close to the penalty arc line. Both were exhausted but happy and satisfied. Sports gave some relief and was an outlet for built up nervous tension.

“Just like old times, eh?” Zach said and comradely bumped against his cousin.

Ray nodded and sent a longing gaze across the field, “Yeah…”

“Why did you quit anyway?” Zach asked in a reproachful tone.

“My parents couldn’t afford the club anymore, I told you,” Ray mumbled unconvincingly and was glad when some of his brown hair fell down in his face, covering his frown.

“Rubbish if you ask me! I told you to move in with us, remember?”

Ray laughed at that. It had been a most stressful time back then when he had fought for the membership in his football team. But he had only been fourteen and no one cared about football enough to consider helping him argue with his Dad. Okay, the exception to that was his Uncle and Zach. Being on the team had not been that expensive anyway.

On their way home, Ray suddenly remembered what Zach’s Dad had said.

“There was something about a match?”

Zach nodded.

“Oh, right. We’ve got a game on Saturday against another school that’s been arranged by our coaches. I can get you a good seat if you want?”

“Sure! I’ll be there!”

Zach grinned widely. And then suddenly he made a submissive shrug of his shoulders.

“There’s something I’ve been meaning to say… I’m awfully sorry that I so often pretended to be busy with homework when you used to visit us. I simply hate this kind of family reunions.”

“Join the club”

~~~~~~
On Saturday, Zach gratefully accepted Ray’s thanks, without hiding his wide grin, for getting him a seat down on the field next to the team’s bench since his parents had decided to join him.
Sometimes Ray actually despised himself for his cold attitude towards his parents. When he heard their stupid comments and their intolerant judgements on various subjects (Actually, it was just his Dad most of the times…) he knew he had at least a reason for his arrogant demeanour.
Zach had always been a good player. Ray had to admit that Zach was totally right in his judgement about Brian. He was even better than Zach as a striker. He did not loose one fight. He converted a centred shot from one of his teammates and scored the first goal of the match.
Ray grinned when he heard some girls behind him cheer excitedly every time that Brian had the ball. He was good-looking too. When Ray had been playing soccer, he also had a pretty huge fan club. They won three to two after making two more goals in the second half.
Zach beamed at Ray and raised his fists up in the air when he passed him on his way from the pitch back into the locker room.
“Victory!” he shouted happily and was dragged towards the team’s locker room by the others the next instant.
“Wait outside!” he still managed to shout and then he was gone.
Ray went outside the building as told and leaned against the wall next to the door leading into the locker room. After fifteen minutes, his parents and Uncle came past.
“Are you waiting for Zach? We’ll be back in a couple of minutes. Alright? So don’t run off too far. Just want to show your Dad my new car,” he added with a wink as his sister and Ray’s mother. His mother sighed in resignation and thought, ‘Why did he always have to point out his prosperity to her husband?’ She would be the one later to experience his hurt ego.
After another ten minutes, the door next to Ray opened and some guys from the guest team came out. Five minutes later a few other people appeared and with them the striker, Brian who Ray had been carefully watching during the game. For a split second, Ray thought he looked even better up close than from afar.
Brian positioned himself opposite of Ray and exhaustedly leaned back against a concrete pillar supporting the canopy above. He sent Ray a most disarming smile and eyed him briefly.
“You’re Zach’s cousin, aren’t you?” His voice was calm and pleasant.
Ray nodded and said, “Good game.” That was all he could say, for his concentration was captured by something else.
Absentmindedly he was scanning the good-looking guy before him. His blond hair was now wet from the shower instead of sweat like when on the field. But it still had that fluffy and bumpy air like before the game. He had a somewhat handsome face, blue eyes and his statue was somewhat frail which was rather uncommon for a sportsman. He was smaller and probably a little younger than Ray but the way his exhausted body leaned against the pillar displayed maturity and something Ray could not quite define.
“Thanks,” the other smiled back. “You’re waiting for Zach?”
Ray simply nodded. “I’m Ray, by the way”
“I’m Brian, pleasure”
“Zach already told me about you”
They shook hands.
“Did you use to play football too?” Brian wanted to know.
This topic was a little embarrassing for Ray, even the more now that he was talking to such a good footballer.
“Did Zach tell you that?”
“Aye, he said you were forced to quit or something?”
“That’s about right, yeah…”
“Would you like to join our practice on Monday? Zach also said you are still really good and I’m curious”
“I don’t think I could actually compete with you. I’ve seen you out there and you did great!”
“Thanks” Brain looked genuinely flattered.
“Zach is convinced that with a little training you’d beat him in every way” Brian smiled softly.
Did his cousin really think that high of him? He would have to thank him. At the very same moment, he felt the sensation of overwhelming joy flooding his body and mind. He would be able to play football again! Good football! Sure, at home, he had some friends who occasionally played with him but they really sucked. That was fun on one hand but it certainly did not remotely feel like football.
“Sure! I mean…,” and Ray slightly nodded towards the door labelled ‘Coach’s Office’, “I’m gonna have to ask my uncle first.”
“Oh, come on! You’re his nephew! He must let you!”
“Yeah maybe, but you know him, no decisions without him. He likes to guard his rights as Coach like a wild boar its babies.”
They shared a laugh and then Brian asked, “So you’re coming with us tonight?”
Ray must have looked surprised for Brian quickly added, “Did Zach tell you? We’re going out tonight, the whole team, except the coach of course.” Brian grinned and Ray could not help a smile.
“Uhm, no. He didn’t tell me.”
“Oh alright, but now you know. So you mind joining us?”
And again, his smile left no other choice but for Ray to say yes.
Brian nodded appreciatively. “Great”
That second a widely grinning Zach and the rest of the team swarmed out of the building. They were apparently arguing about something of huge importance. A second later Ray knew what it was.
One of them asked Brian, “Do you know who’s Zach’s new girl? He doesn’t want to tell us!”
Brian laughed and shook his head.
“I’ve got no clue! I didn’t even know he actually had someone new!”
Brian sounded extremely amazed but his eyes showed merely polite interest. Interestingly, Ray watched Brian’s gaze wander over the ground and up his legs to his crotch. He was confused about that but pretended not to have noticed. What was confusing him even more though was the fact that he did not really mind or felt uncomfortable. That was the first time during this vacation he hastily pushed back the thought of what had happened three years ago. When he had learned something he could never quite forget, much to his discomfort.
