:: The Eternal Kiss ::
The shadows danced as she crept like a ghost in the night, weaving her way around the darkened streets: always present, yet never noticed unless she wished to be. She raised her face to meet the moon. A faint smell drifted on the breeze; cinnamon. The scent tantalised and teased her, drawing her onwards. She ran in the shadows, unheard and unseen, towards the scent.
He was rushing home. The winter weather was hostile and biting. Turning his collar up, he shuddered as a blow of wind caught the back of his neck unprotected. He thought back to the previous night; he had been late then… and the night before, and the night before that. Shaking his head, he picked up his pace, determined to be early for once. At least the dog would appreciate it.
She watched him in the shadows. His scent called to her, making her blood sing with desire. She would wait and watch. She would always wait and watch…
Turning a corner, he jolted in surprise. He felt someone watching him, eyes on him in the darkness. Something was not right. Giving an uneasy laugh, he headed through the darkened park, more anxious now then ever to get home.
She followed, a silent stalker in the darkness, creeping along amidst the shadows. She was so close to him, so close, yet worlds apart. She reached out a pale hand, almost touching him, but jerked it back. He had turned, and was looking at her. No, not at her. She almost sighed with relief. He was looking at the shadows. She merged further with the darkness; still following, still smelling. His scent, the rich cinnamon which rolled on the back of her tongue, made her fangs slide out of her mouth in anticipation. She kept a firm control over her baser instincts and slid alongside him, easily keeping pace with him.
He shivered, stopping in his tracks. Something was there, he realised with a silent gasp; There in the park with him. He slowed down and glanced around. Nothing moved except the shadows. For the first time in his life, he felt as though he was not the top of the food chain anymore. There was something hunting him, something primitive and much darker then anything that he knew existed in the world.
Now was not the time. The park was too open, too visible. He had to go further. She stood silently next to him, silently willing him to move forward. She reached into his mind and placed the order into the fragile human’s brain. Go. She smiled to herself as he leapt forward, almost breaking into a run.
Covering the distance between the children’s adventure playground and the snack bar area seemed to take him a lifetime. When he was there, he paused once more: looking around, making sure he was alone. He couldn’t shake the feel that he was being watched. Some primeval instinct told him that he was in danger. His body urged him to run, to flee whatever trailed him in the dark, but his brain was telling him to be rational. Rational is not what I feel like, he mused silently as he slipped into the wooded area of the park, the seclusion found amongst the trees making him more jumpy. But it was the only way home.
She smiled, a brief baring of fang as he took the route she had hoped for. She moved closer, his scent almost overwhelming her, the desire to feed so strong that she thought that she would jump him there, at the entrance to the woods. But no, she must wait still. And waiting was a game to her, one which she always won…
He soon reached the heart of the wood, the fear in him growing with every step. She could smell the fear, radiating from him in waves; so strong that she almost thought she could cut it with a knife, or sink fangs into it. She couldn’t wait any longer.
A figure stepped out in front of him. He started.
“Are you alright?” he called. The figure smiled, the pale moonlight slipping through the trees making it clear that it was female.
“A woman shouldn’t walk these woods alone at night,” he told her. “Let me walk you out of here.” He approached her and she smiled again. She took a step forward, standing next to him.
“Why are you out here?” he asked.
”Why are you?” she replied in a husky voice.
“I’ve come from work, going to get something to eat.”
“I, too, am going for food,” she said, inwardly laughing at him.
He glanced at her. Something about the way she said that scared him, sending shivers down his spine. It started to rain; she moved closer, as if seeking shelter. He smiled and put an arm around her shoulders, playing the part of the strong male protector.
Leaning in, as if to whisper in his ear, she sank her fangs into his throat. He let out a sigh, bring her closer, thinking she was giving him a love bite and not adverse to advances from a pretty woman.
She sucked on his neck, draining the very life from his body. She lowered him slowly to the muddy floor. When she pulled back from his neck, he sagged and weakly opened an eye.
“What… What are you?” He trembled. She smiled.
“I am the shadow that haunts the night. I am your every dream come true. I am a vampire… and you will join me, no?” she purred in reply, biting into her own wrist and placing it over his mouth. He stared at her for a moment, before letting the crimson fluid flow into his mouth and down his throat. The Eternal Kiss.
