Greece

I've had this begginning of a story sitting around my desktop for a few weeks and I'm not sure if its worth putting more time into. Read what I've got and if it intrigues you and you would like to read more or have any suggestions/requests let me know. As always thanks for reading and enjoy.

~Greece~

Marcellus rounded the corner to find his brother seated in the same chair he’d occupied for the last few days. His arms were folded peevishly, and his mouth was curled into a scowl. "Oh, Domitius you’re not still sulking are you?" he asked harshly. His brother failed to acknowledge him, he didn’t even look up. "Poor little Domitius, the beauty he’s flaunted so shamelessly all this time has finally come back to bite him on the ass!" he challenged, hoping to get a rise out of the boy. Apparently it did the trick for Domitius gave a short dismissive laugh.
"Marcellus you have no right to speak to me in this manner! It is not my fault that I am so much more beautiful than you are, so do not seek argument with me. Cant you see that I am deep in thought?" he said petulantly. "Oh great Zeus, is that what you were doing? And all this time I thought that you were trying to make father and I feel sorry for you. Well nobodies going to cater to you any more Domitius, not me, not father, not your endless stream of would be lovers. I hope you’ve had your fun these past few years because they are what have sealed your fate. Enough of this simpering about. You should be grateful that fathers found some use for you, that I am willing to find you a place in my empire, that you are not a total dissapointment. All childish rivalry aside it was set from the moment of my birth that I would succeed father. I’ve been trained for it. While you were out cavorting with the other youth and wandering taverns in search of your philosophers I was bent over a tablet, stylus in hand. I dare you to declare that I have not earned this laurel with my own sweat, blood, and tears. Despite what you may believe my pretty one it takes more then a pleasing appearance to rule effectively. Out of all the cards you could have drawn this is your best bet."

He sat down beside his brother and curled his arm around the younger mans shoulders. He could feel Domitius's muscles tighten in discomfort. "Besides I hear its beautiful In Egypt. Imagine all the new experiences that await you. You would stifle here in Greece anyway." Domitius smiled at this and replied, "That is if I ever get the chance to leave Pharaohs side. Ill be under lock and key, I’m nothing more than a slave, an adored slave but a slave none the less. Father may as well have sold me to a brothel.
He knows that as long as I’m around I’m a threat to the glorious future he has planned for you. So he sends me off to the desert as tribute, like some gilded beast for the slaughter. I am just as fit to be emperor as you are. True I have not spent nearly as much time in my studies as you have, but I’ve learned. All the people I’ve come to know through intimate means, men and women both have taught me something. I know the heart and the soul of the people. While all you know are words you have memorized off dilapidated scrolls, ancient formulas, out dated philosophy. My knowledge is fresh, contemporary, and I could put it to good use. But neither you, nor father wants to hear of this. You’d rather turn me into some ineffectual little pawn, a harmless beast. I am not an animal, I am a man, I tell you, a man!"

"Oh, Domitius why do you say such things?" Marcellus asked with a sigh. "Do not fight your destiny. You are Zeus’s greatest trophy, the most beautiful youth in Greece. You were made for negotiation, not leadership. It does not make you any less of a man. You have just as much purpose as I do. You are to be the most beloved possession of Pharaoh, who represents all of Egypt. You will be in a great position of power and we will rely on you heavily to keep the peace between Egypt and Greece. I almost envy you. I hear that the Pharaoh is a beauty in her own right." Domitius turned towards his brother. "Her?" "See it is always these important little details that escape your attention. Do you not know that Pharaoh is a woman?" Domitius's complexion darkened at the snub but he consented, "No, I did not."
"Well, apparently she’s a real improvement on her father. The people love her as far as I can tell. It matters not that she is female. She carries out the male persona still, and the people refer to her basically as male. But brother you cannot fail us. I know that as soon as she sees you she will become helpless with desire, that I have no doubt of, but you must promise never to do anything to endanger either yourself, or Greece. As I’m sure father has told you, this is not a permanent arrangement. In a few years you will return to Greece where I will have a suitable position awaiting you." Here Marcellus ruffled his brother’s hair affectionately and pressed a kiss to his brow. "Ah I get it now," Domitius mused, "just enough time to get me out of the way. Enough time for you to establish yourself so that nothing I may do can demolish your empire. Isolate me from Greece and all news of it so that when I return I am unfit to do anything." Marcellus chose to ignore these accusations. "We ride to Egypt tomorrow. Get some sleep; you’ll want to look your best."

He rose to go but Domitius seized his hand and drew him back upon the seat. “Will you truly cast me off so easily? I can understand father’s motives, but you? Have I been so terrible that you will not miss me at all? Brother I know that we have our differences but I’ve never been apart from you. Do not forget me. Do not become so obsessed and power hungry that you forget your own brother. Swear that you will return for me, no matter what?" "I will return for you my beautiful one, never fear." Marcellus soothed, taking his brother into his arms and holding him close. "I love you Marcellus." Domitius whispered tearfully.
"Domitius, it is this very thing about you that makes you so dangerous. This power you posses to enchant everyone that you encounter. You are truly a child of the gods, and may they serve you well and protect you. You lead a charmed life-" Domitius held his finger to his brothers lips. "Shhh, no more words from you now. You’re beginning to sound like an emperor already."
