I don't know where this is going right now. I don't know if it's finished or not. This may be a one-shot story. We'll see. This story was inspired by "Mama," the song by Genesis. It is not about a man's relationship with his mother! Watch the video, listen to/read the lyrics, and you will understand.

It's hot, too hot for me, mama
But I can hardly wait
My eyes, they're burning, mama
And I can feel my body shake
Don't stop! Don't stop me, mama
Ooh, make the pain, make it go away, hey
No, I won't hurt you, mama
But it's getting so hard.

--Lyrics by Genesis

Mama

He’d been traveling for some time. Looking for her. Never finding her. He followed rumor after rumor to no avail. The most recent rumor had brought him to this rundown border town. It was like any border town anywhere in the world. It existed in that half space that you find on the edge of two countries, not a part of either country, but not separate from it. It was the middle of the summer, and even as the sun was setting, it was hot, dusty and dry. The heat washed in waves through the town.

He could feel the sweat trickle down his back as he entered the only open business in town, the local saloon. The sun cast strange shadows through the slats covering the windows. The mud brick was showing through in several places on the walls. Everything had taken on the appearance of the dun colored dust that swirled through the air, whether that’s how it began, or that’s how it ended up. Everyone in the saloon was sullen and silent. The men in the saloon glared in his direction as he entered, but then returned to their drinks when they determined that he wasn’t a threat, not wanting to move too much in the heat. The women ignored him, not interested in plying themselves in the heat. Even the flies dragged along the walls, not wanting to exhaust themselves.

He ordered a whisky from the barkeep and gave him a description of her, asking if he’d ever seen her. He hadn’t. The man’s heart sunk a little, but this was the town where she had gone, he was certain of that. He decided to wait, he had to have her, he was desperate.

He wanted to talk to someone who might know where she was, someone that had seen her. He hoped that this was the place where he would finally find her. He’d lost her so long ago. The heat between them made this place seem cold in comparison. He didn’t know it when they got together, but that heat would make him follow her around the world, never quite catching her.

They’d met a long time ago, in a bar not unlike this one. They had enjoyed each other’s company for about a month. Then she left without a word. She traveled, not staying in one place too long. He’d been searching for her ever since. He waited and drank and sweated.

He sat at the bar and watched the shadows grow longer as the sun slowly sank. He heard the door open occasionally, but it was just another patron wanting to get out of the heat, even though the saloon seemed hotter than outside.

Once more, the door opened. This time it was a woman in a red flowing skirt and gauzy, blousy white top. She breezed through the door, carrying her own heat with her. It was her, he was certain of it. She had the same long black curly hair, the same dusky skin, the same walk. She floated as if being carried by the very air that dragged everyone else down, the only one that looked comfortable in the heat. She was the only color in the washed out room. He watched her as she went up the steps to the veranda, there surveying everything she saw. Satisfied with what she saw, she gave a slow languid smile, and turned to enter her room. She didn't notice him sitting in the shadows watching her.

Once she was in her room, he could breathe again. He couldn’t believe that he had found her after so long, traveling so far. He got up from his stool, made his way across the room, and slowly made his way up the stairs. He wasn’t sure what she would do when she saw him. He didn’t know if she wanted to see him. But he had to have her. He didn't know if he even cared that she might turn him down, or if that would even stop him.

He stood before her door, steeling himself to knock on it. After what seemed like hours, he finally pounded on the door. One quick hard knock.

She opened the door.
