Bryce walked down the hallway keeping his head down and doing the best to avoid his fellow students. He was hoping Dave wouldn't find him. He wasn't in the mood to put up with him. Sure, Dave was Bryce's best friend. Okay, maybe Dave was Bryce's only friend.
They weren't always friends. Dave used to pick on Bryce every day during middle-school. Then all of a sudden Dave was his friend. He'd even beat up anyone who bothered Bryce.
Bryce finally made his way through the crowded hallway and to his locker. He saw a pair of black boots in front of him. Bryce groaned and did his best to cover his fresh black eye with his short blonde hair.
"Hey Dave..." Bryce mumbled looking up at his friend.
Dave was everything Bryce wished he was. Dave was tall, muscular, confident, and popular. The girls flocked to him. Bryce even envied Dave's long black hair.
Bryce, on the other hand, was short, skinny, and shy. He wished he could be more out-going like Dave.
"He hit you again, didn't he?" Dave growled looking at Bryce's black eye. "Why did he do it this time?
Bryce pushed Dave out of his way. "Don't worry about it." He opened his locker and began to gather the books he needed for the day.
"Don't worry about it? He's been beating you up a lot. You should just leave him. I know you have nowhere to go. My mom said you can stay with us."
Bryce's parents disowned him last year when they found out he was gay. Ever since then he's been living with his thirty year old boyfriend, Joe.
"I don't want to impose. Your parents have enough people to take care of. Besides, I'm going to break up with him after graduation. I'll go off to college and I'll never have to see him again." Bryce closed his locker and looked at his friend.
Dave sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Fine... Just say the word and I'll go over there and kick Joe's ass. He should pick on someone his own size."
"Yeah, okay..." Bryce looked at the clock hanging on the wall. "We better get going. Class starts in a few minutes."
The two boys started walking down the hall together. Dave didn't like the idea of Bryce staying with that jerk until the end of the school year. It was only October. He's tried many time to get Bryce to leave, but his friend always refused.
"Did you hear we have a new science teacher?" Dave asked looking down at Bryce.
Bryce looked like a zombie. Dave could tell he was exhausted. He was pretty sure the only reason his friend showed up for school was so he could get some sleep.
"Really? Have you seen him yet?" Bryce asked yawning.
"Nope. I guess we'll see him in a minute. Hopefully he'll last longer than the other one." Dave chuckled thinking back to their last teacher. She quit after she found a tarantula in her purse. After she saw the huge hairy spider she had a nervous break down.
"Lets hope you don't make this one cry." Bryce smiled at Dave.
"I didn't think she'd get that upset. You have to admit it was funny."
The two boys entered the science room right as the bell rang. "Yeah, it was funny. Good thing no one knew it was you." Bryce and Dave sat down at the table they shared for class. "Hopefully this guy won't mind me sleeping..." Bryce yawned and rested his head on the desk.
Bryce was sound asleep when the new teacher walked in the class room three minutes later.
The whole room fell silent and the girls began to blush and whisper to each other. The man walked up to the front of the class.
"My name is Adam Jones. You can call me Adam. I don't really want to be called Mr. Jones. It makes me sound like a old man. Anyway, let me take roll. I want to get to know everyone's names."
He began to go down the list of names. Adam paused at Bryce's name and waited to see who would raise their hand. Adam's blue eyes searched the class room. He stopped at the two boys in the back of the room. Dave was poking Bryce in the ribs trying to wake him, but Bryce was sound asleep.
Adam smirked and headed towards the back of the room. He picked up Bryce’s science book and slammed it on the table.
Bryce yelped and jumped out of his seat. The whole class burst out laughing. Bryce blushed and sat back down on his seat.
“Bryce, I do not tolerate sleeping in my class. Do you understand?” Adam asked looking down at the tiny boy. Bryce’s face was as red as a tomato.
“Yes, sir. I’m sorry.” Bryce looked up at his teacher. He almost gasped when he laid eyes on Adam.
His new teacher was breathtaking. He was one of those beautiful people Bryce always wished he was. Short brown hair fell into hazel eyes. Bryce smiled. With a teacher this hot he would have no problems staying awake.
Adam looked down at Bryce and frowned. “See me after class.” He walked back to the front of the room and continued roll call.
The bell rang to signal the end of class. Dave gathered his books and got up to leave. “I’ll see ya at lunch. Good luck, man.”
Bryce mumbled a thanks as he got up to approach the teachers desk.
“Do you always sleep through your classes?” Adam asked looking at the short boy standing in front of him.
“Yes, sir.” Bryce stared at his feet. He didn’t want to look at Adam.
“Amazing. You scored a one hundred on the last test and you have perfect grades. How do you do it?”
“Osmosis.” Bryce didn’t want to tell his teacher that he copied his notes from Dave.
Adam laughed. “That’s a good one. You better not sleep in my class again.”
“Is that all you wanted to say? I should be getting to my next class, sir.”
“In a second. I know I’m cutting into your nap time.” Adam smirked when Bryce looked up glared at him.
“The real reason I wanted to talk to you is that eye of yours. Is someone bullying you?”
Bryce quickly looked away from Adam. “No. It’s nothing...”
“Is everything okay at home?”
“Yeah. I...I tripped and hit the edge of the table this morning. May I go now, sir?” Bryce didn’t like this stranger asking him about his eye. It was none of his business.
“Sure, go ahead.” Adam sighed as the boy walked out of his classroom. “My door is always open if you need to talk.”
“Whatever.” Bryce mumbled as he slammed the door shut.
A week and a half later Bryce limped into his science class twenty minutes late. Joe was extremely mad at Bryce because Bryce slept in and didn’t have breakfast ready. So Joe felt it necessary to teach Bryce a lesson. He backhanded the boy across the face giving Bryce a fat lip. Then Joe took a baseball bat and hit him in the left hip. Bryce was doing his best to hide his limp.
“Sorry I’m late, Adam.” Bryce said as he took his seat next to Dave. Dave shot Bryce a worried look.
“That's okay. We are on page seventy-three.” Adam watched Bryce do his work. He knew something was wrong with Bryce.
When Dave saw that Adam wasn’t looking he whispered to Bryce. “He hurt you again. You have to leave him. And I don’t mean after graduation. Right now.”
“Shut up. I don’t want to talk about it.” Bryce growled at Dave.
“You never want to talk about it!” Dave yelled at Bryce. The whole class stopped what they were doing and stared at Dave.
“Get back to work.” Adam said over his students talking. He didn’t look up from the papers he was grading.
Not long after Dave’s little outburst the bell rang.
“Want to walk to class with me? Bryce asked heading for the door.
“I’ll catch you at lunch. I have to ask Adam something.” Bryce nodded and headed out the door.
Dave headed towards the teachers desk. “Mr. Jones?”
It’s Adam. What can I do for you?” Adam put his pen down and looked up at Dave.
“Can I umm... Talk to you about something? Adam could tell something was bothering Dave. “It’s about Bryce...”
The two boys sat alone at the lunch table. Dave knew better than to ask Bryce what happened. He knew his friend was mad at him.
“Did you bring a lunch today?” Dave already knew the answer. Bryce never brought a lunch.
“No...” Bryce mumbled looking down at the table.
Dave passed half of his turkey sandwich across the table. The two boys shared a bag of chips and a soda.
Right before the bell rang Adam walked into the cafeteria. Dave noticed him scanning the sea of kids. When Adam spotted the two boys he headed over to them.
Adam knelt down next to Bryce. “I would like to talk to you after school. Come to my classroom.” Adam could see Bryce was going to protest so he quickly walked away.
Bryce rested his head on the table. “Great... Joe is going to be furious with me if I come home late...” He was waiting for Dave to tell him not to go home, but his friend didn’t say anything. Bryce lifted his head off the table. Dave was no longer sitting across from him. Bryce didn’t see Dave the rest of the day.
Bryce jumped when the bell rang signaling the end of his last class. He had no idea why Adam wanted to see him. He had been paying attention in class. He was still getting good grade.
Bryce knocked on the door to the science lab. He heard a muffled “come in”. Bryce opened the door and quickly shut it behind him.
Adam was sitting on his desk with his blue tie loosened. “Please, sit down.” Bryce grabbed a chair and moved it so he was sitting in front of Adam.
“It has come to my attention that you are in an abusive relationship.” Bryce opened his mouth to say something, but Adam spoke before he could get a word out. “Let me say something before you speak. Don’t be mad at Dave for telling me. He’s your friend and he doesn’t want to see you hurt.”
Bryce jumped out of his chair. “Joe loves me!” Bryce was angry that Dave would betray his trust and tell some stranger something so private. He was mad at Adam for confronting him. He had no right. Adam had no idea what was going on.
“If he loved you he wouldn’t hurt you. Dave told me everything. He really wants you to go live with him. He has your best interest in mind.”
“I can’t leave. Joe will come after me.” Bryce always thought about leaving Joe. He knew Joe would hunt him down and hurt whoever got in his way. Bryce didn’t want to see Dave’s family hurt.
“We’ll go to the cops. They will take care of Joe. Please Bryce. Let me take you to Dave’s.”
“I-I can’t. I have to go home. Joe is already mad at me. I don’t want to make him angrier.” Bryce had tears in his blue eyes. Everything Adam said was true, but he couldn’t leave Joe. He loved Joe.
Bryce ran out of the science lab and out the main entrance of the school. He didn’t notice Adam following him.
Bryce stopped outside of his house and looked at his watch. He was half an hour late getting home. With any luck Joe wouldn’t be home. Hopefully he would be out at the bar.
Bryce quietly opened the door and stuck his head in the living room. He felt a strong hand close around his left wrist and pull him through the door. Joe slammed the door behind him.
Joe was twelve years older than Bryce and three times bigger. When Bryce first met Joe he was handsome. He had big brown eyes and short black hair. Recently he shaved his beautiful hair. He always smelt like booze.
“I-I’m sorry I’m late. I had a project to work on.” Bryce stammered looking up at his boyfriend.
“This is the last time you’re going to be late!” Joe laughed and squeezed Bryce’s wrist until he heard a ‘snap’. Bryce cried out and fell to the floor.
“Please Joe. I’m so sorry. Don’t hurt me!”
Joe let go of Bryce’s wrist. “It’s too late to say you are sorry.” Joe kicked Bryce in the ribs until Bryce curled up in a ball sobbing.
Joe never saw the man watching through the window. Nor did he see the brown haired man pick up his cell phone to call the cops.
Joe walked into the kitchen and came back out a minute later holding a long knife. “Get up you little piece of shit!” When Bryce didn’t move he pulled Bryce to his feet by his hair. “When I tell you to do something you do it!” Joe screamed and back handed Bryce across the face.
“Please don’t, Joe. Stop. I-I love you!” Bryce sobbed as he looked into Joe’s blood-shot brown eyes.
There was a loud ‘bang’ and the front door flew off its hinges. Police officers swarmed into the house with their guns drawn. One officer shot the knife out of Joe’s hand. Half a dozen cops jumped on the man. Bryce fell to the floor and curled up in a ball.
He wasn’t aware of what was going on around him. All he knew is that he hurt. He closed his eyes and felt his pain slip away.
