Frequently, I tell myself that the type of life that I want to live is quiet, peaceful, and normal. Never have I thought that it was asking too much. But as of current events, it seems that I’m asking the gods, or whoever, for a little bit, scratch that, a lot more than they’re willing to give. What have I done to deserve this? I was just sitting there, minding my own business, reading a book of all things, and then he came into my life and turned everything upside down and made it all… bleh. That’s the only word to describe it….bleh. If I had chosen another place to eat that day… but destiny had other plans in mind for me and my entire family. And to think all this happened because I was insistent on eating at that stupid café.
It was about 2 o’clock in the afternoon and only one person occupied the Rizzo Café which was located at the corner of the business district. The young woman sat in the corner next to the window was completely absorbed in the novel she was reading, only pausing to take a sip of her latte or a bite of her sandwich. Never had she been there; however, after one of her co-workers insisted greatly that she eat lunch at Rizzo’s, she had to comply. Thankfully she loved the food and enjoyed the atmosphere immensely, in no way was she disappointed. Not too long after she began eating, a very handsome man walked in. He looked around for a moment before he proceeded to the counter and placed his order. He grabbed his espresso and scanned the room once again.
His eyes landed on the young woman in the corner. Deciding he didn’t want to eat alone, he approached the petite brunette and placed his coffee on the spot opposite to her.
“Excuse me, miss. Is this spot taken?” he asked sweetly.
The woman, too absorbed in her book, didn’t take notice of his presence.
“I’ll take that as a no,” he pulled the chair out and sat down across from her. Again, he tried to make small talk by introducing himself, but to no avail.
He smirked as he saw her reaching for her coffee cup, a mischievous plan forming in his head. Slowly, he reached across the table and pulled the cup away from her grasp.
Still not looking up from her book, she felt around the table, trying to find her latte. Eventually, her hand met the handle of a cup. She squeaked in delight, finally finding her coffee. She brought the beverage up to her lips and took a sip and cringed at the bitter strong taste that hit her taste buds.
The man across from her burst out laughing, causing her to jump in surprise.
“I don’t even know your name, and already we’ve shared a second-hand smooch.”
The girl raised her eyebrows. “Smooch? I haven’t heard that one in a while,” she returned to her book.
“My name’s Caleb Hara,” the man said and extended his hand out towards her.
“Pleasure,” she murmured as she took a quick scan about the room, noticing there were plenty of spots, seeing as they were the only two in there.
“And your name is?” he asked, a bit amused that she was trying to get rid of him. It was a first.
The looked up, annoyed that he wouldn’t leave her alone. Hoping it would get him to shut up and possibly move, she answered, “Jillien Rae.”
“What? So do people call you Jilli or Ann for short?”
“It has an E, and the only person who’s allowed to abbreviate my name is my sister. So please refrain from doing so.”
Caleb got the hint that she didn’t want to be bothered and found himself satisfied with just looking at her. A few minutes passed and she, again, was caught up in her book. Caleb couldn’t take his beautiful stormy grey eyes off of her. He, in fact, found it quite amusing; when she got to some part in the book he saw her smile, a genuine smile. It was cute.
He again attempted to make conversation with her.
“So, I see you enjoy reading Layla Rae’s novels, I’ve read a few myself. Though I do find it interesting that someone else besides me enjoys reading such graphic scenes about torture and other grotesque topics.”
Jillien looked up from her book, again feeling that tight knot of annoyance in her chest.
“Well, I don’t find her books very graphic. And for one thing her books are not about grotesque topics, they are stories about people and their struggle to survive situations that are seemingly impossible to get through. She writes in an unique way and uses a lot of symbolism and imagery to explain how they feel as well as explaining how that certain situation seems to them; endless torture. Not many people understand that, and that is why the books seem so grotesque to them, they miss the entire point.” Jillien sighed and began to gather her belongings.
“Leaving so soon?” Caleb asked as he too prepared to leave.
“Well, seeing as if I don’t leave now, I’ll be late for work, yeah.”
“All right, then I guess I’ll see you Friday night around seven.”
Jillien looked up, confused. “Wait… what?”
“Of course, for our date. Dress nice and don’t be late.” Caleb quickly grabbed her hand and kissed it. “Until then my Fair Lady, I bid you adieu.”
Jillien was stunned, annoyed, and quite amused, never had a man been so determined to go out with her, it was quite strange. Good thing her sister wasn’t here or it would be all hell. Snapping out of her stupor, she looked at her watch and freaked out. It was about 2:40, and she was supposed to be at her next job in ten minutes.
“Shit!” she cried out, she knew her sister would be very upset if she were to be late.
