He was holding her in his arms, again or for the last time? He wasn't sure, because she wouldn't talk to him but he knew he would probably not like the answer he would get anyway.
"Tell me you love me?" He asked her but felt like begging just to hear it one more time, but she would no longer meet his gaze.
His lips brushed against her cold and motionless ones, lips that seemed frozen in place that were warm and welcoming just hours before. Tears were burning his eyes as he was growing steadily aware that she would not return his kisses anymore.
"Kiss me." he sobbed out against her lips, his growing depression making way now for annoyance that she would not kiss him. He deserved a kiss from his wife, why shouldn't he get a kiss?
"Kiss me dammit." After fifty years of marriage, he was showing rage against his wife. Gripping her shoulders, he shook her roughly.
"Kiss me or I'll kill you!" Her head flopped back and forth on her limp neck and he gasped through tears of rage that hid his heart break, reality settling in at last.
After sixty years of marriage, his wife had died in her sleep while he sat beside her hospital bed.
"I love you."
