Colorful Reasons
They told him she wasn’t normal from birth. He could tell they were right when he first laid eyes upon the tiny light pink haired and pink eyed baby. But he refused to listen to them after having just lost his wife, Avariella. He needed the little girl in his life now. He needed her to be his reason to live. However, he soon realized that she would need him just as much, perhaps more.
~5 years later~
“Reason!” Soon, the little girls father realized he could no longer see the bright pink hair of his daughter. Fear struck deep within him as he quickly ran around the playground. “Reason, Daddy doesn’t like this game.“ He shouted, gaining looks from the other parents. He knew why they weren’t helping him look. Everyone could sense that she was different, perhaps even a threat to them and their children. Reason was banned from every play group and was forced to be home schooled by the district.
“Reason! Where are you?” Finely, he heard a soft cry coming from underneath a near by bench. “Reason?” The little girls father looked down and saw his daughter. But he couldn’t bear to touch her, comfort her; he was stunned by what he saw. His little girl looked up at him, no longer with soft pink hair and eyes, but with jade green eyes and emerald hair. “Wha…?”
“Daddy, my head hurts.” The little girl was crying and hold her head in her hands, almost as if she let go it would tumble to the ground.
Once his daughter spoke he snapped back to his reality, he was her father and she was in a great deal of pain.
“Shh, it’ll be okay sweetie.” The man reached under the bench and quickly pulled her into his arms. She cried gently on her fathers shoulder as he walked back to where he had left his book and reading glasses. However, once he started close to the other parents he saw the looks of horror on their faces at the change of his child appearance.
He quickly decided that his book and glasses weren’t worth putting Reason through that and turned around to walk home quickly. Once they reached their apartment the little girls father told her to lay down and take a nap, while he made a phone call.
As Reason was drifting off she heard he father begin to speak. “Hello, Winnie? It’s Ike.” Then, Reasons newly green eyes drifted close.
~10 Years Later~
After that day in the park, Ike picked up their life and moved clear across the country to live with Winnie, Avariella’s sister. Winnie lived in a small cottage in the woods of Oregon. Through the years that passed Reason incurred many more changes. After her green hair and eyes, they became brown, granting her a bit more freedom to feel normal. Next they changed yellow and then blue, now she was cursed with purple eyes and hair. She also attempted to cut her long beautiful hair once, which only cause her hair to bleed from the ends and soon grow back to it’s normal length. Reason hated what happened to her. She hated feeling like a guinea pig to some unknown source. Once she did try to dye her hair but all it did was turn it gray, along with her eyes. Of course, within minutes her hair and eyes changed back into the beautiful violet they had been.
Along with the changes Ike and Reason learned more about Avariella and her family. Things she never shared with her husband. Apparently, Avariella was a type of a witch, a light witch to be exact. Of course, that information shocked Ike; yet he was glad he could understand what was happening to his daughter. His wife was dead, he needed to focus and help his daughter. It was a harsh reality for him to face, he would always be deeply in love with Avariella no matter what secrets she kept. However, he knew Reason needed him, now more than ever.
~2 Years Later~
“Daddy? Are you ok?” Reason stood in the door way of her fathers room. Ike was sitting on his bed holding his and Avariella’s wedding picture. He didn’t even glance up to see his daughter, but continued to look upon the photograph.
“I’m fine. I’m just looking at your mother.” He had been doing that a lot lately after finding out the truth about his wife. He would just sit for hours and look at a picture of her.
“Winnie made dinner, it’s ready.” Reason said softly, she felt the pain her father was in. She wished she had been able to know her mother but she loved her father and only wanted him happy.
Ike closed his eyes and took a deep breath in, “thank you.” he whispered.
Ike never did come down for dinner that night, nor did he come down for breakfast the next morning. Winnie told Reason to work in the garden while she prepared things in the house. Reason didn’t understand what was going on. Why was Winnie so sad now. Why was everyone becoming weak and sad? Yet, she didn’t question what she was told to do. After a few hours in the garden Winnie came out wearing a long black dress.
“Winnie? What is going on? Why is everything so.. so.. black?” Winnie loved her niece dearly, but sometimes wished she would act and understand more like her age and less like the 9 year old her father tried to keep her as.
Reason, still on the ground, moved over slightly so she was next to the chair her aunt was sitting in. Laying her head on Winnie’s lap she felt the tears welling up in her eyes. Part of her knew her father was gone, and knew he’d be hurt it she cried and mourned his death terribly. Ike loved his daughter and always wished her happy, no matter what.
“My dear, sweet Reason. It was the pain of heartbreak that took your father.” Winnie said softly as she stroked her niece’s violet locks.
“I don’t understand. Mother died years ago, why now?” Reason looked up at Winnie with her pleading eyes of lilac.
“It just became too much my dear, as it is becoming for me.” Tears sprang from Reasons eyes the moment Winnie spoke that.
“Oh no, do not leave me as well!” Reason clung to her aunt in hopes of keeping her there, keeping her alive.
“Child, I am not leaving you. I am, however, bringing in help from outside.” Winnie again started to stroke her nieces hair gently.
“Help? For what?” Reason was slowly claming down.
“To help with you my dear. You are almost 18, that is when a witch becomes such. However, since I do not know much more than my own water ways and your mothers light ways, for which you are not either, I am bringing In a sort of witch expert. He will arrive in the next few days.”
Reason soon looked up again at her aunt. “Aunt Winnie, what am I?”
Winnie smiled down at her beautiful niece and whispered, “ You, my dear child, are my family dear, and I am very proud to call you such.”
