^^^^^^^^^^^^ The beginning ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Severus jumped down from the bed and started snarling at the door. I jumped up and grabbed my sword. Severus was phasing the floor in circles, looking vivid. Outside my window people were running around with torches and swords. Out on the grounds grey, huge creatures were walking around. Wargs. I had only seen one up close once; the day that my father died. It was not a memory I wished to remember.
Seconds later a flock of large dogs came running from the village and towards the wargs. A sudden knock on my door made me jump high. Severus was ready to jump the person standing on the other side of the door. “Who is it?” I asked scared, standing upright in my bed. “It’s Turok, madam,” the dark voice of Turok sounded from outside. “May I come in?” I called Severus over to the bed and gave Turok the signal to come in. “Are you alright, madam?” he asked concerned. “Yes, of course,” I answered quickly. “What about the others? Are they all safe?” Severus was standing guard at the door again. Walking back and forth. “Yes, madam,” Turok said. “We have followed the plan, but we can not ay anything about the damages yet. It will have to wait ‘til the morning.”
I went back to bed again with Severus sleeping at my feet. He had been a gift from my father, six years ago. And the best gift I had been given. Severus was the love of my life. He had been trained to watch over me, and he did a great job. A handsome dog he was too. He was black with long hair all over, yellow eyes and a lovingly mood.
The following day was Sunday, and I made ready to go to town for the church. Most of the people from the village where coming. I eat a quick breakfast and walked over to Turok. “We have been lucky, madam,” Turok said. “The wargs did not do much damage last night. But they did take two horses, a few sheep’s and a cow.” Well, it wasn’t the first time. We had been having this problem for many, many years. All the way back to my great grandfathers’ rule. And it didn’t look like we would be rid of this problem for a very long time.
The church was very crowded this Sunday. I had not seen it this crowded for months. As I entered the church I saw someone I could have managed without; George Wickham. The mayor of the town. I hated him so much! He had meant nothing but trouble to me since I inherited the village from my father. He had done everything he could to take the village from me. I was not sure for how long I could say no to his offers, though.
As I entered the hall he looked at me with his black eyes. As usual he frightened me a bit. He had always been staring at me with lust in his eyes. And that frightened me. In appearance he was tall and lean, but with a strong build. His hair was long and black. His trimmed beard was in the same colour. He always looked very elegant and smug with his fancy armours on.
He came walking towards me looking very smug. Oh no, what could he possible want now? “My dear Alexis,” he said bowing. He then took my hand and kissed it for a very long time. “I am very glad to see you here today. You see, there is a matter I wish to inform you of. It is of highly significance.” What was he up to now? I thought. “And you wish to discuss this with me today?” I asked, trying not to stand so close to him. I could feel him trying to catch my scent, and it made me feel very uneasy. “No, I was hoping to give you a visit this Tuesday, if you will allow me to come,” he said sleek. “Why would you start being polite now, George?” I asked him cheek. “Oh, come on, Alexis,” he said leaning on the wall beside him. “We’re in public, and there is no use to let other people see how we usually negotiate.” His eyes had their usual, annoyed look. I usually had that effect on him, mostly because of my stubborn behaviour and lack of respect for him.
“Fine,” I said quickly. “But if you start with me, I will call the dogs on you.” I turned to walk away, but he grabbed my arm and pulled me back. “With the news I’ve got for you, you shouldn’t be that cheek with me,” he hissed in my ear. “I could very well be your best friend after this. So you better start showing me some respect!” I stared at him for a second. “You have to earn it first,” I said, pulling myself out of his grip and walked away.
The two following days almost went by like a flash, much to my frustration. I always hated these meetings with George. He always came with some offer in change for the village, but I always turned him down. And he cursed me green every time, wanting to strangle me. And I loved to see him like that.
I sat at the dinner table in the great hall when Turoks’ son came running over to me. “Madam! The mayor is here to see you,” he said breathless. I gave a sigh before I got up from my chair, Turok following faithfully. I slowly walked out to the grounds to meet George. He had just climbed down from his horse when I saw him. “Alexis,” he said bowing deeply. “Severus…” He looked darkly down at Severus, who was standing by my feet. “George,” I said back, making my courtesy. “Do you always have to bring that bloody dog?” he asked in despair. “Yes, I do need to bring him,” I said quickly, looking hard at him. “Oh, come on! I didn’t mean it like that,” he said hurried.
George walked quickly over to my side, standing so close that only I could hear what he had to say. “I need to speak to you, Alexis,” he whispered close to my cheek. “It is a matter of great importance. And I wish to speak to you alone, no advisors. And not to worry, I won’t bring any of mine either.” I looked at him in disbelief. What was he planning now? Well, if anything happened, Severus would be there, he wouldn’t let anyone come near me. “Alright, then,” I said after much consideration.
We walked over to the great hall where we could be alone. The great hall was usually deserted on weekdays, unless there was a party at night time. George opened the door. “Alexis, the mongrel stays outside!” he said fixed. “Fine!” I said annoyed. “Severus, stay!”
As I sat down at one of the tables, George started phasing the floor. “Alexis,” he started slowly. “I have come today because I have got a problem of some significance. At least I think so, my advisors tells me to just leave it alone. But I am afraid that I can’t do that.” I stared at the floor for a moment before he continued. “And my problem has a lot to do with you and your little village. Now, you have refused to help me for some years, and I am not sure how to solve that. Nothing seems to be good enough for you.” He had raised his voice slightly, and I could tell that there where a trace of anger or frustration in his voice.
“I have always cared about you,” he said very slowly, like he was embarrassed to tell me. “I have tried to help you and the people in Valhall, but you always find a way to stop me. But the problem I have now forces me to choose between you and my pride.” I started laughing slightly at what he said. I was sure he was setting me up again.
“You stop that right now!” he said with clenched teeth, slamming his fists in the table, staring at me. “Now, listen! My problem is that the North is threatening me with war. They claim my troops have been plundering their villages near the coast line. You see, Alexis, what’s keeping me from declaring war against those buggers, is you and your fucking Valhall!” He was really angry now. Or something like that. He was standing inches from my face, both hands planted on the table.
“If I declare war against the North men, they will rape the women; use the children as slaves and burn the village down. And your bloody dogs won’t save you from that fate!” He was very angry, I could tell. But I just didn’t know what to say, or what he meant by this. “Where are you going with this? And what does it all mean?” I asked slightly curious. He sat down like he was very tired. For the first time I could tell that he wasn’t as young as he usually looked. He was after all almost forty years old.
“I have come today to give you an offer,” he said lighting a cigarette. “And no, it is not one of my usual offers. But mark my words; it will be my last offer. If you turn me down, you will never see me again.” This almost sounded like a good thing, I thought. Perhaps I should turn him down. He gave a small cough, just to get my attention again. “As I said, this is not one of my usual offers. You can keep Valhall, and I will do everything in my power to keep it safe. That goes for you and your people too. I will not allow the North men to brake into the village. And as a slight bonus, I will reopen the market for you.” He paused for a few seconds, trying to read my face. “What do you think?”
I looked at him for a very long time, searching his face, every inch of it to find his secret. And what I found was not very pleasing. I could not tell what it was, but I would not be happy. “It sounds too good to be true, George,” I said calm. “And as usual it probably is. So, you can just tell me straight away; what do you want from me in return?” He was bending over the table again, staring into my very soul. “I want YOU,” he said with pressure on each word. I stared at him, having difficulties believing what he said. “I want you to be mine, to give your self to me every night.”
There was a fire burning in his eyes. A fire that I didn’t like at all. “Are you having me on?!” I asked, taken aback. “This is no joking matter, George. I know that we usually don’t stand on very hard demands when it comes to being polite, but I am a lady, you know!” He smiled slightly. “It is the best offer you will ever get, and you won’t have to loose Valhall,” he said matter of factly. “You ought to think of what’s best for your people, Alexis.”
“You evil, bloody cockroach!” I said thru clenched teeth. “My God, how I hate you!” I got up from my chair and headed for the door, but George run passed me and blocked my way out. “Let me out, George!” I said angry. “No! You have to listen for a few more seconds,” he said authority like. “By tomorrow night you must make a decision. I will come by tomorrow either to leave Valhall to the ruins, or to climb your bed. It is your choice, Alexis.” We made eye contact for a few seconds, and I wasn’t sure what to think of what I saw. I stood there for a moment, like I was completely paralysed. And during that moment George kissed med. I closed my eyes, and to my surprise I enjoyed it. And as I opened my eyes, there he was; the same old George Wickham. I felt disgusted at enjoying kissing him. “Leave me alone!” I said quickly, avoiding his eyes as I left him alone in the great hall.
And please give me some feedback. I won\'t keep posting the story if you don\'t like it. Please enjoy!!
