Chapter I
Devils
Who told you about a man without fear
Who told you about a God who does not care
Who told you about a pain that does not hurt
Who told you about a love that turns to dirt
She\'d never get used to sleeping in a coffin, that was for damn sure. Especially when she panicked and nearly tore the lid off sitting up.
Lost for breath and cold heart throbbing in her throat, she nearly thanked God when she realized once again that she wasn\'t dead. Not really any way.
Icy green eyes closed and she drew her knees up, resting her forehead against them. The fimilliar creak of Jussi\'s coffin was almost calming. She watched from her upright fetal position as he sat up, stretched his neck and open and closed his mouth several times.
Even after all this time she was still baffled at how his hair remained as it was when he laid down every dawn.
She was still staring at his shirt-less body when hands closed on her shoulders and she gasped in fright; nearly jumping out of her coffin. Jyrki\'s chilling laugh never ceased to get her blood boiling. A muttered curse under her breath caught his ears but he merely shook his head at her as she helped herself to her feet.
They never spoke.
Not right at dusk.
Not before they ate.
...\"ate\". The word nearly brought sickning laughter to her throat. Killing wasn\'t her favorite part of all of this, that was for damn sure. Although it certainly seemed to be the exact opposite for Jyrki. They walked silently through the masses of winding underground tunnels. Nearly twenty minutes in complete silence. They even walked soundlessly. It was more like floating.
She watched as Jyrki used his abnormal strength to push open the mosuleam door and take the first step out into the abandoned graveyard. He always went first. No matter how maniacal and underhanded he was, he always protected them.
That\'s probably the only thing at this point that kept her with him. She was afraid of facing the night alone.
Almost as much as she feared the light of a new dawn.

It wasn\'t until they met up with Linde and Trinity did she begin to relax every night. Something about the errie silence that Jyrki and Jussi shared with one another made her feel like even more the outcast she knew she was.
Everyone had more experience with this. Everyone had killed more than she had. Everyone had been undead longer than her.
It reminded her painfully of being in a new town when she was younger.
She nearly repeated her earlier fumble when Ville appeared at her side, \"Evening.\"
He gave her a playful grin when she covered her mouth to keep in her cry of surprise and ducking back when she went to shove him.
\"Don\'t do that.\" She whispered so Jyrki wouldn\'t throw her the \'keep your voice down, damnit\' look.
\"I can\'t resist. You\'re too easy, Christina.\"
She didn\'t respond as the group began to grow with the addition of Katrina, Contessa and Lauri. Ville noticed her silence after a moment and placed his arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer to him.
He was cold. But she didn\'t shiver. She knew she was just as frigid as he was. In some morbid way, that was comforting.
When the group began to break off again, Christina held on to Ville\'s jacket as he made to turn off down a side street. He hunted alone. He always had.
\"I want to go with you.\"
He hesitated a moment, looking back to Jyrki as he continued walking. Both knew he could hear them. And both knew he was listening.
\"Not tonight.\" He whispered back, reaching out to brush his fingers against her pale cheek before pulling away and heading off.
She felt the hot prickling of tears in her eyes and fought them back bitterly. She took a deep breath and turned, only to be startled nearly off her feet for the third time that night, finding Jyrki standing directly in front of her.
He grabbed her elbow and pulled her flush against him, hissing in a violently calm voice, \"You hunt with me.\"
Christina spared herself the anguish of even trying to argue; nodding instead and following as he took off again.
Who told you about cause and effect
Who told you about a heart that can forget
Who told you about fortune and fame
Who told you that the evil has got no name
By now, Lauri and Katrina had vanished off together and Contessa and Jussi\'s retreating backs could be seen heading off back the way they came.
Only Trinity and Linde stood nearby, outside a pub they were known to frequent.
She swallowed back the lump in her throat and hurried to get up by Jyrki\'s side. He ignored her completely. Jyrki could go days without saying a word to anyone. She knew he wouldn\'t speak to her unless she broke the silence first.
\"I\'m sor-\"
\"No you\'re not.\" He cut her off, not looking at her at all, \"You think he\'ll make it easier on you. That he\'ll take pity on your sorry self and catch your next meal for you.\"
She could feel her anger returning, \"He\'d help me.\" Although she barely even whispered it, he heard it like it had been shouted in his ear. A split second later he grabbed her arm tightly, nearly making her gasp at the pain of it, as he twisted it back into an unnatural position.
\"You\'re right he\'d help you tonight but it wouldn\'t do you any fucking good later on would it? What about when we leave you? Then what are you going to do when you don\'t have someone to feed you?\" He was nearly yelling at her, which was more startling than anything else he\'d said to her in his deadly whisper. He never raised his voice, \"You\'re just as weak as the day you came to me.\"
Christina deadpanned. Her eyes opened so wide she was in danger of them falling out of her skull.
\"The day I \"came\" to you?\" In a rare moment, she employed her vampiric strength and yanked her arm back so hard that she stumbled backwards. Jyrki nearly did a double take on his hand. \"You did this to me! You made me this way!\" She hissed, \"I didn\'t fucking ask for this.\"
Jyrki had recovered quickly from his momentary lapse of impenetrable calm, smirking at her, \"You begged.\"
\"I thought you were going to kill me.\" She spat.
And for a second she almost thought she saw his eyes soften. Almost.
The silence that settled over them was more than intensely awkward, nearly making Christina regret her words. But he grinned at her, suddenly reaching out and pulling her closer to him. She was tense and completely alert. His mood shifted so fast, it was hard to tell what he was really feeling.
\"I was going to kill you.\" He breathed in her ear, hands roaming down her back, causing her to shudder and try to step away.
\"Then why didn\'t you?\" She barely whispered.
He held her tightly. \"I knew you\'d make me feel alive again.\" Somewhere inside her rational mind, she was shocked at his response. She knew Jyrki was making himself intentionally vulnerable to her. Moreso than he had probably been in years. But she couldn\'t think correctly about anything with the way his warm breath was ghosting over her ear, before his sharp teeth clamped and she nearly melted against him.
She was fairly sure she whimpered but just like that he was gone and she was left feeling colder than she had all night.

It took her a moment to calm her mind enough to reach out and find him. He\'d obviously caught a scent that he wanted. Once she latched onto him, it only took her a matter of seconds to catch up to him, four streets over.
She ran without sound, not even breathing the least bit loudly as she lept to grab the low hanging emergency escape ladder she knew Jyrki had taken just a moment before. She pulled herself up easily, sprinting along the escape, bounding up and over the railing to leap onto the next on without second thought.
As soon as she landed, she caught sight of Jyrki, now down the alleyway, lying in wait.
It took her a moment to spot his target. And she nearly gasped in shock when she did.
A youthful-looking woman was walking down the lit sidewalk with, what Christina knew instantly was, her young son.
\"No...\" She breathed, looking over at him. Their eyes met as he turned around to grin evilly up at her. She lept over the side railing and down behind him but it was too late.
She closed her eyes, cringing as she heard the woman\'s muffled scream. That much she knew was coming. What she wasn\'t expecting was a moment later when Jyrki came back into the dark alley carrying the woman over his shoulder, obviously dead. Her son was dangling between Jyrki\'s hand, covering his mouth, and chest.
The bloody smile he offered her made it clear what he expected her to do as he shrugged the woman\'s limp body from his shoulder.
A small cry was heard from the boy but both ignored it, \"Please...\" she whispered, sounding even more broken than she felt.
He didn\'t respond, only threw the child down before her. Christina was frozen in place as the young boy lay on the ground in shock, tears rolling down his cheeks. Jykri crouched down beside him, drawing another whimper from him.
\"Take him, Christina.\" He said, sneering at the boy before him.
He looked up a moment later when she hadn\'t responded, \"I... I can\'t.\" She breathed.
Anger filled his eyes quickly, \"Take him.\" He said much more sternly. When she stood still, unmoving, he nearly shouted, \"Now!\" She jumped, teary eyes upon him, \"Jyrki, please...\"
Teeth gritting audibly, Jyrki reached out and grabbed the boy by the neck, lifting him up as he stood.
\"You take him and you do it now.\" He ordered.
\"I can\'t.\" She said, finding her voice, \"...I won\'t.\"
The sound of an approaching vehicle spurred him on, \"Do it now, Christina!\" He demanded.
She shook her head weakly.
\"Before his heart stops!\"
\"No!\"
\"Fuck!\" He spat, sliding further back as the car passed them by. The moment it was clear, Jyrki crushed the limp body against the wall, grabbed Christina by the back of her head and shoved it close to his neck, \"Do it.\" He hissed.
She hesitated and he pushed again, her lips touching the warm flesh of the child. And she couldn\'t help it, her mouth opened on instinct and she latched onto him.
Soon Jyrki\'s hand fell away and Christina was left supporting the small body as she drained him within an inch of his life.
She pulled off with a gasp and stumbled back, letting the body fall to the ground; her hand coming up to clutch over her bloody lips. She felt like she was going to be ill.
But Jyrki didn\'t even give her that. A split second later she was being dragged along the alley back the way they came. She knew she was in for it once they got back to the crypt.
While her mind was reeling, she hardly even realized he\'d stopped her again. They were standing in the alleyway near the pub Linde and Trinity had stopped by. Christina made to walk to the street, but her hand was grabbed. The next thing she knew, she was gasping for breath as her back slammed painfully into the brick wall behind her.
Jyrki pressed against her quickly, \"You\'re a disgrace.\" He hissed close to her face, \"You can\'t even kill to feed yourself. You\'re pitiful.\" She opened her mouth to fire back at him, but was immediately thrown off when his mouth crushed against hers.
Her eyes went wide and eased back shut when his tongue slid past her lips. She knew she whimpered this time as her knees went weak. Jyrki held her to the wall with his body as his hands ran down her sides, clutching at her hips, tightly.
A moment later her arms were around his neck, fingers fisting in his hair and she was kissing back with just as much ferocity as he was. A knee pushed between her thighs, spreading them just enough for Jyrki to slide his body between them.
Both of his hands ran down her chest and to her belt, hurrying to unbuckle it.
And that\'s when he she pulled back, gasping against his mouth, \"Jyrki, stop.\"
He ignored her, only intensifying his efforts when the sound of her belt clasp scraping against the wall behind her echoed through the alley. \"Stop...\" She said again, louder but even more out of breath than before, \"Jykri... I said stop!\"
His head snapped up, hand flying to her chin, catching it, forcing her to keep eye contact with him, \"Don\'t tell me no.\" Her mouth opened slightly in disbelief and he leaned forward, latching his still bloody teeth to her swollen bottom lip.
Christina yanked her head back, bringing it into sharp contact with the wall and ripping her lip in the process.
The taste of her blood did nothing to calm him. He ground against her, leaning in again to suck at her lips; but she turned her head away, trying to bring herself to fight, but only whispering a desperate, \"Stop...\"
A moment later, Jyrki detached his cruel lips from her throat, \"Is that what you really want, Christina?\" He asked, eyes unreadable, voice betraying nothing but the fact that he knew her answer before she did.
They stared at each other for a moment longer before his mouth covered hers again and she welcomed him back; knotting her fingers in his hair again.
He groaned softly when she tugged and his fingers fell to her waist again, fumbling at the button of her pants.
Just as it popped open, they both felt a familiar presence, but it was too late. When they both turned, Ville just stood there. His eyebrow arched in a fine line just slightly when Jyrki straightened up, not anywhere near as mortified as Christina felt and knew she looked. He simply licked the blood from his lips and stood as though he were daring Ville to say something about what he\'d just walked in on.
As Christina struggled to close her belt again and smooth down her hair, Ville approached and passed them by, heading back for the main road without a word.
Jyrki caught her eye for just a moment, and for the first time in three months, she felt warm.
But then he turned from her and the feeling left just as suddenly as it had come upon her. He turned and followed Ville back out towards the sidewalk.
As soon as he disappeared around the corner, Christina collapsed against the wall, sinking down until she was crouched. Her elbows propped on her thighs as she pressed her forehead to her hands and squeezed her eyes shut. Willing herself not to think or cry, she simply took a few deep breaths to calm her body and forced the strength back into her legs to stand and follow Jyrki and Jussi back to the mosuleam; feeling dirtier than any amount of killing had ever made her feel in the past.
You\'ve got to ride on your rage with your devils.
