Alone
this story is set in ancient Greece. it is based on mythology. enjoy!
Ampelides awoke from a deep sleep, smiling sleepily. Next to him lie his twin brother, Ampelion, who was fast asleep. “Hello dear brother,” Ampelides whispered. His twin did not reply, but instead rolled over, mumbling softly.
Silently, so as not to disturb the sleeping Ampelion, Ampelides reached for a pile lotus flowers lying in between himself and Ampelion.
He was worried, which was very unusual. The cause of his worry was his twin, and the things he’d been saying. Saying that he wanted to move away and seek adventure. Ampelides couldn’t imagine leaving...he loved his life here.
But did he love his brother more? It was too confusing. Ampelides was not used to such serious things. He could not leave Ampelion, that was a fact, but perhaps he could convince him to stay...
Wishing to halt his thoughts, Ampelides ate the flowers, smiling at their delicious, honey-like taste. Lying back, he felt the sleepy, euphoric feeling that always came with eating the black and purple flowers.
Sleep washed over Ampelides, and he turned over onto his back, sighing. What more did a man need in life? His brother was mad! How could he not be satisfied with life...this life was so peaceful! Who could possibly choose war and turbulence over this?
And when he was sound asleep, Morpheus, God of Dreams, appeared. He saw the sweet young man, asleep, his mouth slightly open. “My beautiful little Ampelides.” He said, kneeling beside him. “Are you sleeping well?” Morpheus chuckled at this. “Of course you are. You always sleep well.”
“What are you dreaming of today?” He asked, lying his hand on Ampelides’ face.
Morpheus ran his hand through his sleeping companion’s soft hair and said, “You will dream of me today, Ampelides. You will dream of yourself coming to join me in my cave. I am so lonely. I see you are lonely, too.” Morpheus stopped, feeling sad, wishing that he could just lie down with Ampelides and sleep forever as he did. But he could never do that. He had duties.
“Dream now, my beautiful Ampelides. I will be with you in whatever decisions you make. I love you, little dreamer.” And with that, Morpheus pressed his lips against Ampelides’ forehead and disappeared.
Within moments, Ampelides shot up, his eyes wide. Somehow sensing his twin’s movement, Ampelion sat up too. “Did you dream, Ampelides?”
“Yes...and what a wonderful dream it was.”
Ampelion sighed. “Do you never tire of dreams and make believe, my brother? Do you ever, ever, wish for anything more?”
Ampelides smiled. “I’m going back to sleep. Join me, brother, dream with me.”
Nodding, Ampelion lie down. “But only this one more time...”
As they drifted to sleep, Morpheus watched them, sadly, enviously, but at the same time, he was joyful. He only wished he had someone to share life with.
And so, as the twin brothers fell asleep, Morpheus wept.
