Prologue

"Okay, so we've decided to go with the Caesarian section, correct?" Dr. Anderson said from behind her cherrywood desk. She looks between both Stephen and Carla; both nod in agreement.

"Right," said Carla, cutting Stephen off before he could even breathe.

"Well, I haven't decided. I have a meeting at the office that I could get out of, but that decision hasn't been officially made yet." His brown eyes turned to pitch as he glared at Carla for jumping in.

"Well," Dr. Anderson said, softly smiling to try to ease the tension, "Just let me know when the time comes, and we'll go from there. Okay. So do we have any questions?" she asked, looking at both Carla and Stephen for any sign of response. "No? We'll see you Tuesday at noon then."

"Actually," Carla said, "I was curious if we could do one more sonogram before next week, just to try and see if the baby is positioned to tell if it is a boy or girl."

"Sure," Dr. Anderson said. "Let me see. I have tomorrow and Wednesday completely full, but how about Thursday at 2:30. Will that work?"

"Absolutely not!!!" Stephen exploded, almost pushing his chair over. "I have a meeting that I cannot get out of. Can't you do this at a different time, maybe in the evening?"

"I'm sorry. That's my only available time before the baby is going to be born," the doctor tried to calmly say.

"Fine. Whatever. Just go to the appointment alone then Carla. I've got to get to the office. I'm already late enough as it is. See you when I get home tonight and we can talk about this later," and he walked out of the door without so much as a goodbye kiss.

As Carla drove home after the appointment that day, she kept thinking about Stephens behavior in the office, about her oldest daughter Harmony, only eleven years old, and her middle daughter Haruka, only seven years old. She feared for them as she remembered what Stephen had told her when she said that she thought this one was a girl too: "I wil have a son one way or another."
