This story is loosely based around a new Zealand TV show called ‘The Tribe’ only in the fact that adults have been whipped out instead of by an infection this is based on a meteor strike also that the children left form groups or tribe in order to survive. The characters and storylines are my own invention.

Out Of The Dust

Lacey pushed the backpack further onto her shoulder. She had to get back. And she only had about 30 minutes to get there by the level of roars coming from the crew behind her. She had to get there and she had to get there without them finding her or the cellar. Lacey hurried her steps. Running wasn’t an option with the amount of food she was carrying the noise from the tins alone would give direction to her whereabouts. She had taken too long getting the food she knew it. Sandy had told her that any longer then 10 m
minutes was pushing it, but she had to feed the group, there was no one else to do it. There was no was that she would let Sandy do it. She could barley make it across a room without stopping for breath. The pregnancy was really taking it’s toll on her. At 8 months Sandy was huge and beginning to just want it over with.

Looking over he shoulder she checked again for any sign over company. She was only a short distance from the city limits then would come the hard part. Getting through the streets was becoming more and more difficult. The gangs were really stepping up their assaults on each other. It would only be a matter of time before there was all out war among the gangs and then there would be no more hiding. No more of anything they would systematically destroy the only home that Lacey and the others had left.

‘I don’t want to go. I don’t care about the risks I don’t want to leave you on your own.’ Lacey clung to her mothers arm. She was only good thing in her life. She had no friends to care about her father had left when she was two she had nothing but her mother. ‘If this is going to happen I want to be here with you. I don’t want to run away from it.’

‘ I know you are honey but I want you to do this you have heard it on the news it’s going to be bad and I want to know that you are somewhere safe. The government have organised this I can’t tell them no and neither can you. There will people there to protect you.’

‘I don’t want a stranger to look after me I want you.’ Lacey finally let her emotions showed and cried for the first time since the first reports had come in.

There was no way to stop it they had said. Scientist had tried and failed. Nothing was going to stop it. Nothing. It was set to happen in three days if the calculations were correct. Three days and the whole world would change forever. A meteor was heading for earth not a complete global killer but big enough to do enough damage to the impact site. Amazingly it seemed the only places that would survive were the only places where no one could survive. What irony. The government had organised for all children aged 9 to 17 to be sent to the only other area that was relatively safe. They couldn’t be sure no one had ever been through this. But an island close to new Zealand had been designated as the safest place to be. Ships were to take the children there after the islanders had been removed. Tough as it may sound the islanders had been very compliant. Children from different countries in the areas that would be worst affected were to be sent. The island couldn’t hold all 9 to 17 year olds. It was a hard choice to make but the governments had organised a wide selection so that no one race or religion had a majority. Finally when it seemed like the world was coming to an end the world was at peace and finally working together for the survival of their children.

‘Have you got everything you need?’

‘I think so!’

‘Just remember that as soon as it is safe you will all be brought back there are no definite in this it could all turn out to be nothing.’ Lacey looked at her mother she knew she was only saying this to make her feel better. There was a definite. People were going to die. Lots of them. Millions most likely.

Lacey took one more look behind her and unable to see anyone made a dash for the gate into the city. It wasn’t far to the cellar. She could make it in just a few minutes. The roars were getting louder. They were getting closer she had to be there now. She couldn’t risk the lives of those she cared for. They couldn’t find Sandy heavens knew what they would do to her. She was so fragile at the moment. She had been since she had arrived. The stress she must be under couldn’t be good for her or the baby. At 16 she had already suffered loss and confusion and worst of all was the unknown. The future for not only herself but for her child. A child she hadn’t known about till she had arrived on the island and after the hit. There was no way she was going to let her down now. She had made this run so many times yet still she felt that unease the hairs on her neck warning her not to take anything for granted that someone could appear out of no where.

The cellar door was barred by three locks and the key was hung around Lacey’s neck . It took a matter of seconds to get the locks unlocked and re locked she had just made it down a quarter of the steps when she heard the screams and the calling of the gang outside. Lacey stopped in her tracks and listened . The voices were moving away thank god. They were safe for a little longer.
