Prologue

To begin with, I would like to let you all know that I will not be one of the authors who begs for reviews and threatens not to update without them. I don't particularly care if you like or dislike the story I am writing. I'm only writing to get this out of my head and give it an ending. If you would like to review, then by all means, go right ahead. I will gratefully take any praise you might have - just as I will ignore all flames, and listen to any contructive criticism you may have. I'm sure no one will be too heartbroken over this announcement.

This is purely a work of fiction(or fantasy, rather), any resemblance to real people, situations, etc. is unintentional and not meant to be taken as such.

In a time long passed, when deities and demons walked the earth alongside humans, tribes were created among the animal spirits. Each tribe included all those particular animals from around the world. This alliance of species was brought about due to the increasing threat that all animals faced from the humans. Every animal belonged to their respective clan, none were left out.
Leaders from each clan would meet periodically to discuss and resolve problems among all the animals. All the clans were completely in sync and at peace with one another. In this time, all of the animals were still herbivores – none of them praying on other animals or humans.
The gods of that age were pleased with the wisdom of the animal spirits. Seeing that - unlike humans - they had unified themselves to help each other thrive, the gods decided to empower the animal spirits with certain changes. So the animal spirits were rewarded with their idea of the ultimate gift, a human form.
All animals were given the ability to morph into human forms at will, freely being allowed to slip between lives as both human and animal. In addition to that, the animal spirits were given certain kinds of magic depending on their tribe. Keeping in mind that the gods were very fickle, not all the clans were equal in their magical abilities.
At first the animal spirit tribes were doubtful about taking to their new human forms. Of course with humans being their natural enemy at the time, why shouldn’t they have been? Many of the animal spirits believed it was degrading to walk among the humans. However, this sentiment slowly lost support, some animal spirits even living most of their lives in their human forms.
As it had become more and more common for animal spirits to live in their human forms, problems began to arise. As the animal spirits took to their human forms, many also began to hunt and eat meat. Also, the destruction of habitats to form shelters for the increased amount of people living in areas drove some tribes out of their forests and fields. The alliance of the animal spirits was eventually replaced with a deep sense of enmity between tribes. In the battles that ensued, entire tribes were made extinct and much of their magical gifts were forgotten in lieu of the power struggle created by adapting to human ways.
The favorite tribe of those deities being that of the fox spirits, they often held counsel. They would speak of the changes that had occurred and how they believed the animal spirits could better adapt to the gifts of the gods. The gods had a deep love for this cunning, yet small tribe. This being the case, all fox spirits had been given the most beautiful human forms and the strongest magic of all the tribes.
Among all the tribes, only the fox tribe kept together and managed to stay out of the power struggle between the other tribes. Though they adapted their ways to live with the gods’ gifts, they weren’t quick to pick a side purely of neither human nor animal sentiment. Instead, the foxes decided that the best way to live was to balance their human and animal lives. They practiced their magic and strengthened their abilities to manipulate it to their advantage.
As this era came to a close, it was obvious that things had changed drastically. The once powerful gods were quickly diminished in the wave of industrialism and expansion that had crashed across the planet. The last prophecy that the gods gave as they blinked from existence was that, while the alliance between the animal spirits had been shattered and their powerful gifts squandered, all hope was not lost. Someone would be born to unify them once more, and would lead them to a more promising future than the one that the animal spirits had doomed themselves to.
